SNES kiosk monitor

OK I just picked up a SNES kiosk and it gets no power at all. I was going to pull it apart to see if there was a fuse but thought I would ask experts in case I may get electrocuted

Here is the video made hope this helps

    Andy,

Can you give us some more info.

There should be a switch on the side that turns it on and off, and the monitor should plug into the back of the unit.  The monitor itself has a switch on it as well, and 2 adjustment knobs on the side.

After that simple stuff is out of the way, you are safe to take the monitor off the base and open up the top cover of the kiosk to see what is going on inside.  I think you need an alan wrench

  • I've tried the power switch and knobs. Also plugged monitor into a house outlet. The fuse inside does not look bad. The inside is full of lots of dust and smells bad of cigarette smoke

Does the Power to the Super Nintendo/Kiosk Base work fine ?

  • Yup the SNES works you can hear the game through the speakers. The monitor just won't turn on at all
  • Did you check the fuse with a multimeter.

I will post a small video tomorrow

  • The tv is a crt that outputs rgb,is yours a Zenith CD15MNTC1.
  • If its the monitor with the red "Super Nintendo" logo on the front, its a special RGB monitor. I have been looking for one of these for ages, so just getting one (even non-working) is a pretty nice find.

I'd pay $100 just for the light on top itself.

CRT monitors are pretty easy to repair as long as it is not the tube that is broken. DO NOT open it up and try to fix it yourself, as even when it is unplugged it can KILL YOU. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!

Most likely a fuse or high voltage power supply problem. If you were closer I'd fix it for you and then never return it again.

There may be some local tv repair shops that have old guys working there that can refurbish it for you. Plan on spending alot of money though to do it. Just for a recap you might pay like $250.

You could also try to find some local arcades that are still running. CRT arcade monitors are basically RGB monitors and anyone who can fix those can probably fix the kiosk monitor.

I don't think I'd scare him away entirely from trying to do it himself.

There are plenty of useful instructions online about how to discharge the capacitors safely.

Once you've done that, you are free to work on it.

That said, if he doesn't own a multimeter and isn't willing to buy one, then learning to fix this stuff isn't for him

Yup that's the one. Also I don't mind buying a multimeter. I just don't know how to use one. Oh and I studied how to discharge the capsitors before I took it apart. I plan on taking it apart again to get a good quality video for everyone.

Michael, just wanted to say thanks for the free caps you sent me a while back.  I finally got around to soldering them onto the SCART cable and now the picture is no longer gray and is perfect!  Youre the man!!

I started going through and logging all caps I will need to do a cap job on everything. BTW can you tell me if the flyback cup is supposed to have little pin sticking out sideways on each side. I think mine are coroded off. You still got the metal tabs facing straight. But nothing sticking out to make contact with the in sides of the monitor
