That's the plan for 2016, right? US + PAL, licensed + unlicensed?

I think it'd be awesome if people threw real muscle into the SNES effort, though it's the toughest one of all in some ways.

EDIT: Never mind, looks like Rally Bike has been updated -- cool.

    How many games is that?

Which, the SNES or the NES licensed + unlicensed set? SNES is typically 720 or 725 depending on who's counting; Rooster lists it as 722 but I've never been able to follow his math.

To get NES licensed + unlicensed, take what's in this thread and add 91, as seen here.

Sorry, I should have been specific. I meant how many games is that, in total, when you factor in the PAL titles? Or, better yet, how many PAL exclusives are there? I probably should have just asked that.

AFAIK after removing dupes and unbeatable games we end up with 677 US licensed, 34 PAL licensed exclusives, and 91 unlicensed in the NES library.

34 PALs, huh? Is there a list of these somewhere? I have just recently taken an interest in that sprt of thing.

That's what I get for not looking. Thanks!

  • I've been playing Lolo 3 off and on and man this game doesn't screw around.
  • I don't think I will be able to put as much effort on this in 2016 as I did this year, at least in the early months of 2016.

I am dealing with a lot of stuff in my personal and professional life, but I bid you all exquisite people good luck on this endeavour.

I will still knock out the odd game or two, specially from the unlicensed set, which was criminal to leave aside this year.
  • Beatrice, if unlicensed IS making a return, I'll be contributing to this thread for sure. Probably not to the level that you did this year, but I'll definitely be making a dent in the list

And if PAL games return, I'll take out the ones you did last year! I'll try anyways. Over Horizon is a grind.

  • Over Horizon is quite the grind yes, and I will take some of the pal games out still because I am crazy for some of them.

I might take my time and beat the game that cost me the 1st spot in the list this year, Mutant Virus.

But I will certainly beat some unlicensed games here and there. There are a bunch that I absolutely love.

But other people will have to fill in for me at the licensed list.
  • Good luck with The Mutant Virus. I had my system on pause for a week when I beat it. I like the game, but not enough to beat it again, that's for sure!
  • I was really put off playing Mutant Virus by that bugged pixel that makes it hard to complete one level. It's hard enough without fighting bugs.
  • I'm hoping to contribute a lot more than last year. Definitely not the level of previous years, but I'm hankering to cross some more NES games off my beaten list and get some new vids up on my channel!!

    L'Empereur is waiting!

  • Yeah I definitely need to give that one another go! Might try and get the rest of the KOEI games I've yet to finish this next year

You beating any Koei games give this thread a huge help! I've wanted to try and play one myself but haven't yet. I'm not sure how many you've played but is there any one you would recommend for a beginner? Also is it a game where having the manuals/maps is nessecary?

Gemfire is about the simplest of the batch, you can beat it in a few hours if you know what you're doing when playing the 4th senerio.

    x2

Gemfire is very accessible compared to the others. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a good step after that one.

  • Thanks to both of you for suggestions! Once I finish Rainbow Islands (which should be today) I will have to give it a whirl!

Lolo just keeps getting me down
  • I'm glad for those suggestions too because I have no interest at all in the Koei games but eventually I want to give one an honest try to see how I fare. I'll remember those two recommendations for sure!
  • I will say that if you play Romance of the Three Kingdoms II before you play the first one, it kind of ruins the early Koei titles. I used to love the first game, but after playing the second I can no longer get into it. And since Nobunaga's Ambition, Genghis Khan, Bandit Kings of Ancient China and L'Empereur all play more or less the same, at least mechanically, it's a hell of a tradeoff.

Anyway, if you're looking at a Koei game, but the strategy aspect throws you off, try Uncharted Waters. It's kind of an "RPG-Lite" title, and I rather prefer the commodity trading aspect to the piracy side of the game (which is not really important until the late-game stages anyway), but it may be something you'd be more interested in. Regardless, it's completely different from anything else they've done, and still takes a LONG time to play through, so it's not like a cop-out if you tackle it instead of one of the strategy titles.
  • I'm looking forward to running this again in 2016 - that's only a few days away! I guess the next step after last year, like Wizard says, is to beat licensed, PAL, and unlicensed all in a single year. There are still 9 unlicensed games which have never been completed, so I hope we can do it. If we do all of that next year, then I don't know what we would do in 2017. Maybe start doing some Famicom games.

Here's the point totals for 2016. Unlicensed is based on two years worth of data, while PAL is based solely on last year. There's 33 beatable PAL games, so there will be one extra 1-point and 10-point game, plus one more right in the middle value wise (5.5). There are 82 beatable unlicensed games, which means one extra 1-point and 10-point game. Like before, Action 52 will be its own category, with each game on it being worth half a point. The caltron/quattro points will be worth 1/6th or 1/4th of their value for each game.

  • My top-loader is warmed up and ready to go
  • Oh boy, oh boy.

I will try to clear a few of the PAL and unlicensed list in the first week of the year.

Then I will sadly be away from my NESes for a fair bit of time.
  • Also you could do PAL unlicensed (maybe next year). Although a lot less people have them, and some of them are quite bad. HES games, Gluk games, etc. Maybe even (*gasp*) Sachen - tracker would probably jump on those.
  • Going to try and knock out s couple new titles this year. I've been playing Dino Peak off and on as well as Double Dragon II. Games skill probably be beat for this thread before I finish them but hoping to finish a new game this year that takes a good amount of time

Out of curiosity (i.e. I'm not advocating for or against their inclusion), do you have a list of the PAL unlicensed titles?

If the goal is met in 2016 and NES/Famicom efforts continue in 2017, the next goal could be doing the complete NES/Famicom library for all regions from 1983-1989. The proportion of translated 1980s games is steadily going up, and Chrontendo is nearly done with the 1980s, so...
  • I'm ready to tackle a few new NES games in 2016!

I'm always happy to knock out a Koei title or two, but I'm slow and methodical with them so that I don't burn out.  Of course, I'm also ok with letting others take a crack at them too!

I think this is accurate. Double-checked it, should be right now.

I didn't count the games that were Sachen-only.

I didn't count games that were released unlicensed in America.

I didn't count the games that appear on America's Caltron 6-in-1.

Some of the Brazilian games are unclear whether they are "pirates" or "unlicensed". Some of the Brazilian games are Sachen games also.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about Sachen or non-US unlicensed just yet. Once we can do the library with PAL licensed and US unlicensed included, THEN we should consider expanding the list further. That said, if they ARE included in the list, perhaps the games on Caltron/Myriad should be counted individually under their single-game counterparts? It won't matter until PAL unlicensed gets added in, but at that point it might make a more organized list.
