with only 4 days before my next weigh in, it's prolly going to be bad, unless i get shit back together.  Just been picking at things WAY more than I have the previous 5 weeks for me.  Days off + being around bad food, made for poor decisions.

The starting weight was wrong,  I was 231, I have lost 34 lbs in 6 weeks

Thanks  buddy,  we have to keep this thread rolling

  • I have been plateauing, hovering between 189 - 191, depending on sleep and what I ate the night before. This week I am going to take another 7 mile run though like I did last week, and if I feel like I can, I hope to up the mileage to 8 or 9 miles. At this point I hope to build my running endurance, and if I can get used to running such long distances two or three times a week, paired with making a conscious effort about my eating habits, I feel the pounds should just come off.

Gonna cook some vegetable soup for dinner and enjoy it the next few days.
  • end of week 6, up .5 lbs' to 291. Sucks, cause I had a really good week, well i did have 1 bad night and a not perfect, but still ok night, as mentioned above, but the rest of was great. no worries. it happens. It's a life style change, not a temporary thing. I DO hope im at 185 next week. It'd be nice to build that distance from 300, and be half way between 279-290.

100% incorrect. Losing weight is all about what food you're consuming and how much. I didn't work out a single time in the last year and lost over 90 lbs. And I've kept it off. Working out and exercising helps, but if you rely on that without fixing poor eating habits, the moment you stop working out and exercising, you'll gain it back.

    You both are wrong lol

Literally every person is different. There is no set standard that works for every persons body. What works for you might not for others and vice versa.

I can eat 4500 calories a day, and never gain a pound thanks to my metabolism. If someone else ate this diet, they would probably blow up like a balloon.

Some people can lose weight from dieting alone, and many others can't.

Some people can work out, and still eat a normal diet rather than a reduced calorie diet, and still lose weight. A lot of others can't.

You have to just do trial and error, until you find a routine and diet that works for your body specifically.

If you are dieting, and not working out and not losing weight. You have two options.

    1. Reduce your calories even more. Not recommended if you are already at a very low calorie count. So many people reduce themselves to such low calories that they are actually starting to hurt your body rather than help it. You should be eating no less than 1200 if you are a woman and 1500 if you are a man. When you start to go lower than that you really should be medically supervised.

    2. Start working out. If diet alone isn't working, you are just one of those people that needs to put that extra effort in. Some people are lucky and others are not.

Just don't give up! Anything worth having in life, is worth the blood, sweat, and tears to achieve it.

You're right that everyone is different, but certainly not wrong that losing weight is all based on what you put in your body.
  • Losing weight is as simple as calories in should be less than calories burned. Everyone has a basal metabolic rate (BMR) based on genetics, the amount of calories you'd burn in a day doing absolutely nothing. Then you have a total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) which takes into account your fitness level, exerecise level, fat percentage, overall weight, etc.

If you consume less calories than your TDEE, then you will lose weight. That is not opinionated, that is literal fact by definition.

The problem lies in figuring out what your TDEE is. It varies from person to person. Here's a simple TDEE calculator, try it out.

    http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

They are usually accurate within +/- 15% if you enter all data correctly. If you eat below your TDEE and still aren't losing weight, then you over estimated your TDEE and need to drop your calories lower.

I am not disagreeing with you that obviously eating healthier will only help. But to say it's the ONLY way is just incorrect information. Or to say losing weight is ALL based on that, that's just misleading, especially for people that have bodies that can't lose weight "Healthily" with diet alone. it DEF is a huge component though.

Congrats on the weight loss btw, that is impressive. You must feel great.

You can use as many calculators as you would like. I know many people that followed their "calculated" diet to a T and didn't lose a pound. Also according to your calculator my base metabolic rate is 1500 calories a day. That means that is what my body needs to function. So why is it when i ate 4000 calories for 6 months i barely gained anything. That is 2500 calories more than my base!!!!

You are also not factoring in other things such as protein intake, carb intake, etc. These all have an effect on your body and it's ability to gain, lose, or maintain weight. 200 calories of fresh vegetables is going to be way different on your body than 200 calories of doritos.

You can't just break down something as complex as the human body into a calculator like that.

They can give your rough ideas of where to start, but they are not an exact science like you make it sound.

I suggest you do a LOT more reading before you give any more fitness advice.  I had a fast metabolism in my youth and ate 4000-5000 calories all the time without gaining weight as well.  My basal metabolic rate could have been right around 1500, it's just that my TDEE was around 4-5k in calories because I was so active.

Also google IIFYM, "If It Fits Your Macros".  If you need to get to 200g protein, 100g fat and 300g carbs per day (for example), your body doesn't care whether you do that with chicken breasts and broccoli or wings and chips.  Eating unhealthy food can wreck your cholesterol and lead to diabetes, but it will not influence your body weight.  It can influence your body composition (muscle vs. fat), but not overall weight, and this is a thread about losing weight.  Not about getting ripped.

  • Mathematically speaking, losing weight is an incredibly simple process. It's just a lot of hard work.

Calories are literally just a form of energy. Every human being on this planet uses calories for energy. Every human being has its own amount of energy (calories) that it needs to operate, things like picking up the remote, or running a marathon all take an amount of energy.

SO THEN, if you simply eat less energy than your body needs throughout the day, then it'll go to its backup source (your body fat) for the energy it needs to operate.

Think of your body as a hybrid car that can switch energy sources on demand. Your body will use up all the gas (food) you put in it before it'll go to the battery (fat). Also, if you put in too much gas into your body then it'll convert it into battery power.

It's really simple, simple, simple math. Hard, hard, hard work.

You are totally missing the point. Not trying to argue, just hear me out. Also if you want to discuss this further just PM me, i don't want to derail this thread, and i am sure no one wants to see another wall of text from me.

My fiance has been dieting for 4 months now. According to that calculator you posted she should be eating 1200 calories to acheive "extreme weight loss". She has been eating only 1000 for 3 months, even though i have been begging her not to go that low. She hasn't lost anything in the 3 months and has been religiously following her diet. All i am saying is that those calculators are not always that accurate for everyone, so it's not as cut and dry as you make it seem. They are a good base point, but every person is different and i have seen this happen with many people, totally confused as to why they are not losing weight even though they followed the calculator. That's all i am trying to say.

As for IIFYM: I said 200 calories of doritos and 200 calories of fresh vegetables will be different on your body. That is highly true. Eating junk food is going to make it VERY hard to meet your macros and not destroy your body.

An entire Broccoli bunch, which is a few whole stalks has the following DV. 200 calories, 3% fat, 18% protein, 54% potassium, and tons of other vitamins.

12 dorito chips, which is not much, is. 200 calories, about 20% fat, 4% protein, and just about no other nutrients.

So eating tons of fast food like mcdonalds and other garbage foods won't affect someones weight? Using that logic To reach "healthy" daily MACRO nutrient goals using just bad foods, you would have to eat an unhealthy amount of other stuff like cholesterol, fat, sugars, oils, etc, you even admitted it. Doesn't that seem counterproductive and not efficient at all? Especially when you can be eating foods that have all the postive nutrition but none of the negative and exponentially less calories and fat.

I know what IIFYM is and i don't like it because it's misleading. On a word for word basis, yes your body isn't prejudice against where it's nutrition comes from, that is a fact and i am not arguing against it. But it's how you use and apply that information is the problem, like how you just applied it against me. That doesn't mean you can just eat whatever you want to meet your nutrition goals and not have consequences, and meeting your macros will be very difficult without adding a long list of those consequences.

Let's use your numbers for example.

200g protein in a day. A mcdonalds big mac has about 500 calories and 26g of protein. That means to reach your macro goals, going on the basis that you can eat whatever you want and your body isn't prejudice, you would have to eat 10 big macs at 5000 calories, 230g of fat later, 4 times the sodium, and 2x the daily cholesterol amount.

Yeah you met your macros, but at what cost?

It's just not very efficient to try and reach a "balanced" healthy nutrition with junk foods, when you can just eat healthy foods. So at the end of it all yes your body isn't prejudice, but what good does that really do you when you are trying to lose weight, or even just maintain wieight if you have to eat 5k calories just to achieve proper macro nutrition. That is not a good thing, and it WILL certainly affect your weight and your overall health. You also will be able to eat a lot MORE portions of healthy foods keeping you fuller which will in turn help you lose weight, and just overall be a healtheir human being.

  • Week 7 weigh in: 197

I have reached the dreaded plateau. No pounds lost this week, I was actually 197.8 last week and 197.0 this week but I already rounded down so the.8 doesnt count
  • .8 doesn't count? If you lost .8 pounds per week for a year you'd lose 42 pounds.
  • Lol at least i warned people in the first sentence, and told him to pm me.

Calorie calculators are crap...seriously. Using that stupid one in the link at my age and height and weight with no exersize (since I'm lazy!) to lose weight I need to eat 2152 calories. I use that MyFitness whatever app to keep track of calories...I'm eating per day about 2050 (sometimes I go a little over) so that means I'm losing weight right? I'm eating even less then that calculator told me! Wrong. I'm the same exact weight as when I started this damn weight loss thing. I'm still 269 =.= STILL!

I'm so tired of watching what I eat and it not doing a god damn thing for my weight. I know I need to move around but it shouldn't make SUCH a difference...I'm eating way less then I used to...isn't that enough to lose a few pounds at least?

I'm sorry it must just be part of your makeup. But that doesn't mean you can't do it!! It's just gonna be a harder journey for you than some others :/ But that will only make  your victory sweeter when you lose however much your target is.

My fiance is not really overweight in my eyes. 5 '4 and 138 pounds, and curvy in the right places. But for some reason she wants to lose like 20 lbs.

She eats like 1200 calories now, for about 3 months,  and still hasn't lost anything.

She has been doing light excercise recently, and finally starting to lose albeit very slowly.

i don't want to go into too many specifics as i am not a nutritionist and from what i gather no one else on this thread is either, so all these theories, and calculators, and science equations really don't mean much to some people.

But from experience and seeing others experiences, sometimes dieting isn't enough and you HAVE to add even just light excercise to your diet.

If you have the money, get a stationary bike. Sit it right in front of your tv and you can bike while watching tv or even playing video games.

It will take some of the monotony and boringness out of the workout. Star off slow, just 15 minutes. And don't kill yourself with resistance and speed, just get your body moving.

Anyways sorry for the wall of text, i really hope you achieve your weight loss goals. Stay positive

  • So an article got published in a medical journal outlining that because of our genetic history and our ancestors having to survive famine, once obesity is reached the body will strike to do whatever it takes to maintain obesity and REGAIN obesity. Around 1% of obese individuals with maintain weightloss without medical intervention.

Now medical intervention might be a nutritionist that forms meal places and also a kinesiologist to make a fitness plan. But it is a serious issue and shouldnt be though of "if I only eat right for a couple months I'll be thin". The struggle is real and it should be taken seriously

    THANK YOU.

it's always disheartening when someone can't lose weight and all everyone says is, "you must not be dieting correctly, or you are eating to much" When they know how much effort they are putting in.

Meh...I've been on the look out for a stationary bike actually...hard to find at thrift stores lol...more so when your on the hunt for one...isn't that always the issue with wanting something?

I've also been twiddling my thumbs waiting for my doctor to give me a referral to a nutrionalist because I think they might be able to make a diet for me that isn't don't eat carbs or eat only veggies...something made for me that takes my body and slow metabolism into account.

Free health care is nice since I don't pay anything but jesus christ the doctors suck and take forever to do anything...

Yeah they can be pricey too for a new one.

Well that's good, the nutritionist can tailor a diet specifically for your body. I hope it helps you

  • Sorry to hear that the myfitnesspal app wasnt working for you, I swear by it i have been tracking my food on it for the last 7 weeks and have lost over 30 pounds. everyone says guys lose it quicker than girls but you are right you should have had some weight loss if you were doing it right. i havent done a lick of exercise as of yet but have started to slow down on my pounds lost so now might be the time to start working out a little. dont give up girlgamer, just regroup and keep up the good fight
  • Well my weight went back up to 194ish today, will probably actually be more around 192 when everything is figured out. It was the Chinese holiday here, and as a result, that meant eat, eat, eat, and drink, drink, drink, without much room for exercise.

Today I am having vegetable soup for lunch and dinner, it is left over from the other day and very tasty. Just heating up and preparing itself for when I get home from work Then I also think I will go for an 11k run tonight, we'll see how that goes.
  • Still working out 3-4 days a week at the boxing conditioning classes. Also signed up for 4/month personal training sessions. If I can just eat better, I can lose so much more weight.

Men do lose quicker...sadly women retain water -_-...just another thing on a long list of why I hate being a woman.

idk I'm close to just giving up and buying a huge cake and a tub of ice cream and locking myself in my room. Seriously all this watching what I eat crap and I get no plus to it...not even a pound ffs. It really depresses me and when I get depressed I need to eat...it makes me feel better but I fucking can't! So that means I'm pissed off and depressed. Not a good combo.

The only thing keeping me from doing that is the fact I need to lose weight before I even think about starting on the road to getting a sex change. End goals and what not...
