With all you guys trying and wanting to try and cut out those drinks, im going to go cold turkey and cut them out starting tomorrow (already had a coke today :S) Water coffee and tea for me. (I dont put anything but a little soy milk in my coffee and tea is straight)

So don't give them all up right off the bat, unless you have a desire to.   Cut back at first and then see how that goes.

3 pops a week is way better than 3 pops a day.   As time goes by, you may cut that down even more; and even if you don't you still cut 18 cans a week out of your diet.

Strangest thing for me personally was cutting out diet pop altogether.   I've shared this with the other mods before, but I went from 6+ cans of diet Coke a day to none.   Swapped it out for water and unsweetened iced tea and never looked back.    If I try to drink a diet pop now all I can taste is the aftertaste.   When I get the itch I just grab a regular one.

Great advice.  That is something ive been trying to help people understand since this little group was started.  Most of the time if you radically change your diet, you are setting yourself up to fail.  Sure, it is possible to give things up cold turkey, but you make it harder on yourself and it can be harder to stick too.  Tapering off of things is a great way to start.  As you said, instead of 3 sodas a day, try cutting back to one.  The the next week instead of 7 sodas a week, cut it down to 4 or 5.    Same with food.  If you eat like crap ALL the time, all of a sudden going on a diet will likely not work.  Cut back your portions even if its bad stuff.   If you cut back and exercise more, you will start to see results.  They may come slower that way, but it will happen.

I drink water 95% percent of the time.   And I actually have no problem eating healthy for the most part.  Tonight I had baked salmon and a little bit of spinich pasta.   I feel better when I eat better options, and I like my own cooking so its a win win.   My biggest weakness is dessert.   I love cakes, pies, pudding, ice cream, cookies..  Etc.    I often feel that since I don't drink soda then its ok for me to indulge in dessert.  But still I need to control them better.   So this week I haven't had any dessert.   Ill probably cave by the time its over with, but eating cake 2 days instead of my normal 6 or 7 days is a pretty good trade off.

It does take some will power.  But look at it this way.  You will feel better, and likely live longer with some subtle changes.  Sounds like a pretty good plan to me..

I couldnt agree more. for me stopping cold now is the end.result of years of cutting back slowly. I had stopped completed a few times before, but the habit sometimes sneaks back, and I have to catch myself before it gets out of hand like it used to. I do still have pop from.time to time now, ive relaxed about the cold turkey quitting from previous times, as I felt.the excessive pop drinking (4 cans per day) was alot.

Another thing about this is routine. My routine is set now that the only pop I drink is when I fill up for gas once per week I grab a 1 litre coke. I find that sometimes just the habit and the act of brealing that habit is the hardest part. thats the part where I struggle most is in my routine. today so far I broke that routine when I got gas on my way home.from work. One step at a time. I just dont.wanna.get back to that 4 cans per.day routine again.

Cold turkey this time is.for.the sake of.the contest!!!!!

I didnt like the almond milk at first, now I love it. I barely would eat a salad a year ago..now I have several a week. Hated tomatoes, now snack on cherry ones.

    Hate celery...still do. lol

Hated cucumbers and working on that one. Can eat them in salad now but still not quite there.

I think a lot of it is in the mind.

try marinating cucumber slices in some applecider vinegar, im a big fan of the tartness of the vinegar one of my favorite snacks or side dishes. think tart pickles.
  • Want to congratulate everyone on this challenge. They say confidence and overall well being affect our success. Makes sense considering high profile C-level executives never look like a hambeast.

When I left for UK I was 235lbs. At this moment I am 178-182lbs and the only changes I made to my diet was eliminating carbs (bread and pasta...I do not touch bread and pasta) and watering down my drinks (Orange Juice/Pepsi etc...all 1 part water 1 part liquid). Keep in mind that you're biggest meal of the day should be breakfast. Followed my a medium sized lunch...ending with either a protein shake with 30g of protein or a very light dinner (chicken breast with a punch of spinach)

I had always gone to the gym 4-6 days a week, and yet I was never able to go below 220lbs for a long time. Until I changed my diet and incorporated a cardio workout in my routine (Run 1.5 mile pre-lifting). Whats exciting is that cardio workout pre-lift had me pumping and able to lift more. Was explained somewhere that more oxygen in the blood equals more muscular power.

  • New rule, no beautiful people! (Kidding)

Awesome progress pic man. I'll never be that weight and be healthy at the same time, my frame and height is too large. But I can dream at 230.

Currently sitting at 305 and gonna hopefully hit 275 at the second 90 day challenge.

I wanna be like that 2 years from now.
  • I keep hearing how breakfast is important and all that but I skip breakfast...have been for 8 years now. I can't eat early or I get stomach pains. Even though I skip a meal...I still weigh so much...blah.
  • When you skip meals, you stunt your metabolism, or so I've heard...need to add fuel to get that fire starting, right in the early morning.

I also hate breakfast, and would often skip (or eat some pastry from the convenience store). Now I am trying to eat a piece of fruit instead. Guava is a good choice...tastes like a crappy pear (and pears taste like crappy apples imo), but very filling.
  • Been under 1800 calories almost every day so far and have had both lasagna and pizza in that streak.

But obviously not in the same day

sounds good ill try it. thanks
  • Just got back from the usual 2.2 mile circuit tonight, now just resting a bit before showering. Originally I wanted to run longer tonight, but my dinner didn't really agree with me, so it looks like that project will be postponed until tomorrow. Still, thanks NA for getting me out there again for a run (I really felt lazy again tonight as well, and hated to head out for the run...but I really wanted those 50 points, lol).

If you want to get more veggies into your diet, try putting them into a soup. I'm not big on vegetables either, but I find them much more palpatable after they've been boiled in a broth with small bits of beef. I enjoy eating stuff in soup I wouldn't touch raw like coliflower, carrots, and those little onion-ball things.

Sounds good, I could go for some vegetable soup.  Maybe I will make some for next week

  • Eep, I've just confirmed the less fun part of weight loss for girls just happened to me: boob loss. I guess not many of you may relate, but your wives maybe? Lol

At least the rest has been going terrific and I'm happy (and satisfied) to be eating healthy at last.
  • Ladies have such a hard time with that, I heard that you're not supposed to do too much cardio and do more weight training instead if it happens.

Oh wow, the beta na is waaay better for phones! Regret not using it before.

I don't exercise much outside of the light daily exercise from work and not having a car. I do use the Wii fit to jog sometimes, but I mostly use it once a week for strength.

I think I may just have hit that lower % of fat where its inevitable. I hit 109lbs (from steadily going down) before my periods made me bloat back up to 113 it seems. I'll keep counting calories and all but I'll kill the deficit for the time being until this stabilises.
  • I've started to do the "eat more smaller meals" thing for the past week. I've had to make an effort to eat breakfast (I used to skip it often) and I my wife and 2 kids aren't on a diet so I know dinners are going to be higher in calories, so I've planned accordingly. The plan was 400/500/600 calories for breakfast/lunch/dinner respectively and 2x 100 calorie snacks in between for a 1700 calorie total. I also drink a glass of water/seltzer between every time I eat. Now that I've gotten more comfortable with it, I've adjusted it to include a glass of water/seltzer in between every time I eat and I rarely feel hungry anymore and usually come in under my goal. I know I'm smaller than others here (170 lbs) but I work in a restaurant next to the pizza/dessert line and there are temptations. You can have sweets and junk food, you just have to be conscious of how much you are really eating. I know eating like that 5+ times a day isn't easy for everyone, but with a little planning and practice, it can help you accomplish your goal.

This reminds me how glad I am to not be working in a place where I have constant access to free hot donuts anymore.

It just depends on your body type. My wife has a naturally large chest so when she losses weight she goes from having big boobs and a small butt to big boobs and no butt. She gets just as disappointed.

PS. Please don't tell my wife I shared that.

Haha. I'm quite large chested myself but most of my weight seemed to be in the sides of my stomach. Probably my thighs too but I haven't monitored them so closely. The butt seems normal, thankfully. That's not where I have much to lose. Lol

This is my first experience with weight loss and its definitely interesting.

Something to actually look forward to...I have two huge fat bags that get in my way here so I'll be happy to see them shrink at all. Plus it might help in the future when I get them cut off of me for my sex change! Yay double bonus lol.

  • Ignore him guys, I'll get a mod in here to delete his comment, along with our three. (if they want to at least)
  • I am drinking a lot of water and have all but completely cut out the evil, soul sucking pop (I had a glass of Gingerale when I was sick, that has been it since the 31st) I do not mind the water. I view it as either getting used to it or keep getting fatter. I am using myfitnesspal and that's helpful to see what I am actually consuming in a day. I have done 30 minutes a day on my elliptical for 5/7 days for the past two weeks. Some days are better then others. If I really am not into it I just do it but Im not going "full throttle". My best day was 640 calories burned in 30 minutes but my average is around 500. I think to myself if those numbers are accurate. They are from the ellepictal machine. I am eating better and less. I must admit I have recently craved some god awful geasy food and might just indulge as I gather from reading some posts that cutting out someyhing might backfire. I guess it's simple to lose weight but not easy.
  • I haven't been keeping up with this as much as i should, but i did some squats and got on the rower today. Legs'll be a little sore tomorrow!
  • Don't worry. I haven't either. I keep forgetting to update the front page.

Just keep a strong mind and you'll reach your goals! I promise.
  • Missed the gym today, but I did do some heavy lifting all day at work today. Also had me a nice turkey sandwich. Will hit the gym tomorrow before work.

Next week starts classes, but luckily it doesn't interfere with my work/workout schedule. I'm still hovering over 185, but I think it's just that I'm losing fat and gaining a bit of muscle (even though my fat is still covering it).

I hope everyone is doing well. You may mess up one day, that's fine! Work out a bit harder the next day. I found that I lost the most weight (and had a better heart rate) when I did intervals on the ellipticals. For the first two minutes, "run" at your own pace (not too fast, but more of a jog). Then the next minute, crank up the intensity twofold. Then back down to the normal pace for two minutes. If this is too much, just do 1 minute/30 second intervals. And just do this for 30 minutes. Oh, and absolutely hydrate when needed (preferably water of course).

That's good for you then. I hope you lose them quicker than I do, haha.

As a side note to your other post: you might be skipping breakfast, but that doesn't mean you skip the calories! I usually skip breakfast too, but make up in how much I eat at lunch/dinner/snacks.

Has anyone tried to swap out regular milk in a recipe for soy or almond milk? I'm fine with drinking any of them but I'm not sure I'll like them at all in sauces and whatnot...

I thought I'd share what helped me motivate myself to lose weight too. I'd always told myself I wouldn't let myself get overweight and that at 120lbs I'd force myself to do something if I ever hit that. Well, I hit that, after eating too much for too long (consciously, I was curious what would be necessary for me to gain lol) so I decided to try this. At first, it seems like a huge task that you just don't want to do... but I wasn't leaving myself a choice. 120lbs might not seem much to you but I am 5'0 so... I was thinking "Oh, but this will take like three months... This isn't worth three months of effort and not enjoying myself!!"

Then, I realized something. Those three months? They'll pass regardless of if I'm trying to lose weight or not. If I didn't start now, then in three months, I'd have another three months to go before hitting my goal weight. That's six months now! So, I resigned myself to my faith, basically. Time is going to pass whether or not I enjoy it, so I'd make something of it. Whenever I craved something, I reminded myself why I was doing this. To have what I really want. When you're actually focused on your goal, getting there is so much easier.

Also, I didn't starve myself. I allowed myself to eat what I like while forcing myself to get used to what I didn't. It worked very well. I do my best to eat the foods I love that are healthy and work in the not so healthy ones. I have a day a week, usually, where I don't work or have anything else to do... so I'm not burning as many calories. That was the day I didn't bother with a deficit and just ate what I felt like, without going over though!

Honesty is the other thing that really helped me. It's tempting to round those calories or your weight... but you're only making yourself your worst enemy.

So yeah, I'm glad to be following this thread and seeing other people deal with this. I know I had it easy with how little I had to lose, but it was a nice experience to have nonetheless.

  • Joined a gym today. More importantly, I have a partner to go with and keep me accountable. He's a coworker, and we're going to start a routine of going after work.

Did arms and abs today. I plan to do cardio and some more abs tomorrow

Now to get the diet right. That's always the toughest part for me. I've always played sports, so exercise has never been much of an issue. But all I eat is junk... :/
