I would be interested in knowing what they were they said they were invalid when I checked
  • 3rd time he's sold SE for $500, he's also sold two NWC grey carts for around $2500.

What? So they were all fake or what? lol
  • I figured it HAD to be fake, but I wonder if the poor sap that bought it knows...
  • I always have wondered if people actually get away with these kinds of scams on eBay. I mean, does the buyer not at least eventually question the authenticity of the item after they purchase it on a reflex buy for this kind of money? They have plenty of time to get a refund through Paypal if they want it. I can understand an uneducated collector just purchasing without thinking it all the way through (especially since you have little time to think if it's a newly listed BIN), but seriously with the buyer protection that exists I can't help but think that this is not something a seller can and does easily get away with. Maybe I'm wrong, but damn.
  • I believe a user here purchased the last 500$ SE and didn't know how notorious the seller already was, but was willing to take the risk and file a claim

Yeah.  That was me.  Here is the post I originally made in the fake/scam auction thread:

Yeah, I'm 99% sure I've been ripped off by this guy.  I have an alert set to Stadium Events (not that I ever thought I'd get one, only to be curious of what the going rate is).  This guy had a CIB SE listed with one picture only.  I couldn't find the image on a Google Image search, and it looked legit.  2 days into the 7 day auction, it was only up to about $350, but then suddenly disappeared.  I thought someone must have PM'd him and gave him a direct offer.  Par for the course.  Then, the next day he has just the SE cart only listed for a $1,000 starting bid.  I thought someone must have been just bought the box and manual off of him, and he's just listing the cart now.  I check later that night and it's down to a BIN of $500.  Without really thinking I hit the BIN button.  I messaged the guy and he seems that he just wanted to be done with selling it.

At first I thought it would be a possible snatch of a lifetime, until I got a message the next day that, even though I paid via eBay, he couldn't get the payment and needed me to re-send the payment via a direct invoice.  (In his defense, Paypal's site was acting funky and it was Xmas so no reps were available.)  I made him cancel and refund the initial payment and send me a detailed invoice noting that it was payment for a NTSC SE cart, etc.  He does, and I use credit to pay for it.

After that, I checked up on him again and saw that he just sold another SE cart the previous day for $700 BIN.  I ask him about it and he says the sale didn't go through because the initial seller wouldn't do the direct invoice thing.  At this point, I'm 90% sure something's up, but it shot up further when he messaged me that he couldn't give me a tracking number because he doesn't have a printer, yada, yada, yada.  So he basically says it will be here by Friday 1/2.

Plus, he was messaging me to try and bid on his Beatles memorabilia, but failed to tell me that he'd be posting, not 1, but 2!! NWC carts a few days later.  At this point, I'm waiting until Friday and if nothing shows up, I'm filing a Paypal dispute.  At least it was paid with credit and verified that it would be covered by Paypal.  Honestly, if this guy is a scam artist, he's pretty bad since he didn't even ship SOMETHING with a tracking number.  It's pretty hard to argue with Paypal without one.

Long story short, it never came, and Paypal refunded me the money.  He eventually emailed me back saying that perhaps the mailman stole the item!  (Those mailmen always know what's in a package, let alone know the value of a SE!)  Anyways, chalked it up as a lessoned learned.  I was thinking of submitting to the hall of shame, but haven't had much time to look into it.

  • tl;dr (read it though) .. greed eats brain/thread
  • The best part is Craig's List clowns try and tell people that SE is really only worth $500 because of that.

Man, that sucks.  I totally get the temptation to pull the trigger and hope for the best.  While I have never been victim to a scam like this, I am always leary of them.  If it sounds too good to be true, well, you know the rest.  Glad you got your money back, though!
