Can NA Beat Every SNES Game 2015?

  • I'm on the last level of Super Battleship.

I got there 2 days ago and screwed it up twice.

It's not even the hardest level, it just takes awhile.

  • OK, Super Battleship done!

I even beat classic mode too.
  • So I finally did clear both loops of Super R-Type on hard...but my fucking recording hardware wasn't working properly and I lost the replay. Consider it beaten for now, but I will try and beat it again and get a replay up. The game is probably the hardest shmup I've played on the SNES, and I don't say that lightly.
  • Respect, pegboy. Super R-Type is super f*ckin' hard. I can't even beat one loop let alone both lol. It's one of those games I enjoy but wish were easier so I could enjoy it even more.
  • How would you guys rate R-Type III's difficulty in relation? It's been on my to-do list for awhile, but I'd gladly defer to pegboy's (vastly) superior skill
  • Is anyone else getting fake malware warnings from this thread, and only this thread? I thought it might be my machine, but I'm on an older Mac (which makes malware issues slightly less likely), and as far as I can tell the only time it happens is when I click on this thread.
  • Haven't played R-Type III yet, it's actually next on my list. I can't imagine it's harder than Super R-Type on hard mode but you never know. R-Type III only has 1 difficulty setting but it does have 2 loops.

I pretty much hate Super R-Type at this point but I've put so much time into it I'd at least like to have some proof of beating it. Ughh, so annoying.

    Nope

    Nope

I was wrong -- it's not this thread, but NA as a whole, since it also happened on the Game Boy thread.

It seems like the first time I open the site and click on a thread each day, it throws up a fake malware warning, and after that it never happens for the rest of the day. Nor does it happen on any other site; just NA. What the hell?!

(The last time something like this happened to me, it turned out it was a server-side infection by a compromised SEO plug-in that was redirecting users to malware sites.)

  • I think Rooster is overdue for some update action

Dino City.  Suprisingly fun, and suprisingly tricky.  I didn't figure out until the final level that the second selectable character had a ranged attack.  Would of changed a lot.

  • R-Type III.  Man, that may of been the hardest SNES game I've ever beaten, even with the unlimited continues and permanent checkpoints.  Harder than Super Ghouls n Ghosts.  It's partially my own fault for not realizing the final boss could be taken down like 500% faster if you use the super beam until my 30th attempt or so.  And it took me forever to realize you have to throw your force pod into the final final boss's mouth to finish him off before he wastes you.

I also only did the first loop.  There was no way I was leaving my system on all weekend and trying to do it again.  I don't know if that's a prerequisite in this thread; it seems a bit silly when games like Demon's Crest and Contra III are considered beaten.  Anyways, doesn't really matter.  I'm checking it off my list, and pegboy will handle the 2nd loop eventually so it's covered either way.

  • Yes! Came to this topic to see if anyone beat me to it, and would have been a little sad if that were the case... but proud to say I just powered through Jurassic Park!

4 and a half hours. Never doing that again lol
  • Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures

  • Just knocked off CLAYMATES. Holy hell is that a tough little sucker. Tougher than you might think. Some BS-esque moments, flawed, but overall, pretty solid platformer. I feel pretty proud that I was able to beat two tough games this weekend: Jurassic Park and Claymates. I'll probably never do that again, lol.

Hey Brock, saw you beat Wolfenstein. What did you think of this SNES port? It seems to divide people into a like or hate camp. Personally, I'm in the former. I really liked it a lot. Still feel based on system standards that it holds up decently today.
  • You know, it's funny. I've had Wolfenstein since I was a kid, and I always had mixed feelings about it. I use to rent to fairly frequently, because I adored it on PC. So when the rental place put it out for sale I jumped on it over Super Metroid, something I regretted for several years (until I got Super Metroid from another place). So I clearly liked it since I rented it so often, and then bought it (I believe it was the 4th or 5th SNES game I ever bought). But I definitely ranked it below most of my library. When I played through it I was just going through the motions, not really enjoying it a whole lot.

Now fast forward 15-20 years.  When I burned through it several months ago, I was suprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's not a great game, and I still prefer the blood and voices in the PC version. But its definitely worth getting if you like the PC version, and way better than the version of Doom we got. Now that was almost unplayable when I fired it up for this thread.

Nice. Yeah it's smoother than SNES Doom and I don't think SNES players give Wolfie enough credit. I actually played the PC version only VERY briefly, so the SNES port was the Wolfenstein I grew up with. I didn't know any better, and I loved it all the same. It's quite satisfying to mow down 20 bad guys in the span of 15 seconds. Sometimes they'll even chase you THROUGH DOORS -- the AI was quite sharp. There was nothing like hearing doors opening from a distance... they were coming after you!

In terms of smooth scaling on the SNES:

Wolfenstein > Doom > Jurassic Park in-door sections.

If you thought Doom was rough (it's actually grown a bit on me over the years), then check out Jurassic Park's "3D" bits.

BTW, props for beating Indy. I got stuck on the mine cart level years ago, cursed and never went back. I need to some day. I hear the biplane one is tough too (all the Mode 7 parts in fact). How long did it take you to beat Indy and did it frustrate the hell out of you? Any gameplay tips? Like I said I never could get past the mine cart stage (keep shooting the wrong stuff) and then rage quit, lol. I plan to return to it maybe later this summer.
  • I beat Indy earlier this year (right before I found this thread) on easy. So when I tackled it the other day it was actually a pretty smooth ride since I still had most of it down

1 - Mine cart level. This one is a bitch until you get into a groove. There's the two types of targets; other carts and the track switches. The switches are what will get you. So every time one was approaching I would hold my fire, and shoot it with a single shot. Double tapping them is what caused most of my deaths while learning the level. It actually only took me two attempts this time.

2- Bi-plane level. I actually found this to be extremely easy. Basically, move to the top of the level and move right or left holding down the fire button. The lower the level of the plane on the horizon, the better. If they're at your height, let them go and start turning the other way. Got it in one attempt.

When I originally beat it on easy it probably took me 3 nights or so. I got it this time in probably less than 2 hours. The Cairo section that's 6 or so levels long was the hardest part
  • True Lies.  Wow, an LJN game that I actually liked.  Wasn't as hard as I expected since there are passwords and plentiful lives.  Final boss is pretty cheap though

  • Thanks for the Indy tips, Brock (I always think Lesnar, but I remember you once said you're not a wrestling fan). I'll have to give the game another shot.

True Lies is a good one! One of my favorites that few ever talk about. As a bonus it captured the essence of the film while (obviously) adding in some extra non-film stuff. I liked going through the subway station, docks and caves. It had all the classic gaming set pieces but still somehow felt a bit fresh. Like the Docks for instance. Good atmospheric shoot them up area that not many other games employ.

BTW, Beam Software was the developer. LJN only published it. Whew. Otherwise it likely wouldn't have been as good

I was suprised by the violence, especially on a Nintendo system.  Terrorists using grenades to turn old women into goo in a shopping mall?  Alrighty

I'm a sucker for SNES sites (SNES hub, SNES a day, etc.), so I'll probalby start going through the stuff on your site tomorrow

Awesome. Yeah those SNES sites you listed are good. There may not be a "definitive" Sega-16 website version of the SNES but all the different sites give you a different flavor. I tend to approach things with a very nostalgic viewpoint, and I tend to ramble a lot, lol. About this time last year I wrote a lengthy review on True Lies, explaining my love for the game. You're right, the game has its fair share of dark humor, like terrorists blowing up old ladies at the local mall. Good stuff!
  • Ok guys I'm really sorry for the long absence! I have updated the list and will try to be more active with the updates.

Some shout outs for this update:

Congrats to Brock_Landers for totaling the scores of all of the other top 3 combined.

Congrats to bronzeshield for completing the 200th game

I think we can get to 300 by the end of the year.  Also, I'm playing Lord of the Rings and actually enjoying it. Color me shocked.  Though I looked at the maps of the Mines of Moria on gamefaqs and... yeah that shit would be impossible without either using them, or painstakingly drawing your own

I enjoyed it too! My wife and I had genuine fun playing through it a couple years ago for the NA SNES effort.

BTW, the manual actually comes with detailed maps! You're supposed to reference them during play, hence the little messages about "location A" or whatever it says.

I think a lot of people who criticize the game don't realize that. Of course it has other flaws, but having the maps makes a huge difference -- the game would be almost unplayable without them.

  • Then I may have to look into getting the manual
  • Knocked out some heavy hitters tonight...

Math Blaster Episode One and Mario Early Years Preschool.  That one didn't have an ending, just a set of mini-games you can complete

Replacementdocs has a manual scan, sorted under "The" for some reason. (NA appears to as well, but I couldn't get the link to work.)

  • Street Racer.  Lots of fun (better than Mario Kart?), but super easy "championship" mode which you can see by the final scores...

  • Hey bronze I just came across your comment in the older thread:

I think this was probably a bug, though, since the game is riddled with them.  The most powerful weapons in the game actually reduce Aragorn's attack power, thanks to a rollover bug; the gems we carefully collected in order to open the gates of Moria turn out to be totally unneeded, thanks to another bug; and loads of smaller bugs, like secondary characters taking off in random directions for no reason, or mysteriously rotating mid-combat so they're facing the wrong way.

Are you saying you don't need to worry about the gems?  That would be a relief because I feel like getting to the end of Moria and then realizing that you didn't get gem X from god knows where and having to backtrack and find it would be madness.

Ha, that would be madness! And I seem to remember another time when a character showed up and handed us an item that we were supposed to have gotten in the preceding cave complex. So the game took pity on us, I guess.

In our playthrough, we didn't need the gems -- the door to Moria was just open. Apparently that's a reproducible glitch, as this page says:

"There are five Gateway Gems in this game that unlock Moria, and one of the big objectives is to get them all. The funny thing is, you don't actually need to get them, because due to a glitch Moria unlocks on its own after a little while. Hilarious!"

So I guess you don't need the gems? But be aware that in Moria, our passwords stopped working, so you may need to go through the whole thing in one sitting.

Alternatively you could try doing the forced password entry trick, where you input a password, it's rejected, and then you input a valid password instead and get the content of the first one. But I think it's better to do it in one sitting.

What a messy game! Gorgeous, gorgeous soundtrack though.
