Can NA Beat Every SNES Game 2015?

  • Here's my playthrough of BioMetal, without dying on Hard:

Now that I've taken down this game, I only have one more US released SNES shmup to clear, and that's R-Type III. I'm planning on doing a 2-ALL for that one, but it might take a while depending on how brutal it is (hopefully not as bad as Super R-Type...)
  • It took me all night to do one loop of R-Type III but:

1 - There is unlimited continues and permanent checkpoints, which should help you with learning the patterns (I don't know if Super R-Type had that)

2 - It's an easier game. I'm basing that on my playthroughs of R-Type II which I believe is very similar to SRT

3 - I suck at video games, especially schmups.  In fact If you look at the 60+ games I've beaten for this thread, I would say the top ten hardest pale in comparison to what you've beaten:

    #1 R-Type III

    #2 Super Ghouls n Ghosts

    #3 Earthworm Jim

    #4 Super Valis IV

#5 Death and Return of Superman

    #6 Battletoads Double Dragon

    #7 Super Turrican 2

    #8 The Lost Vikings

    #9 Bubsy

    #10 Super Bomberman 2

  • That's a pretty comprehensive list though, you've definitely beaten a much wider variety of games than I ever have (and 60+ games and we still have 5 months to go, that's crazy). Part of me wants to go back and try to beat the G&G games on 1 credit, but I've already got some many things on my plate it may take a long ass time for that to happen.
  • Wayne's World

  • Musya: The Classic Tale of Japanese Horror

  • Musya was actually pretty decent but I hated the final boss fight last time I played it.
  • It seemed really tricky at first, and then I discovered how to completely trivialize it. Like, I bet it wouldn't be too hard to get through entire fight without getting hit once, trivialized.
  • First Samurai.  Notice the "Star Blader BJ" and "Moby Dick" credits...  Fun game overall, not sure why it's worth less than $20 when it seems like it's pretty rare (there isn't a single copy up on eBay right now)

  • After like a million hours, I'm through the Barrow Downs in LotR.  I gave up after being lost for an eternity and consulted a guide.  I mean, look at this shit! And this doesn't even show most of the subterranean maps!

  • Some day I will complete lotr, always get bored in barrow downs from wandering.
  • Heh, yup, it's pretty brutal, and even with the (crucial) maps in the manual my wife and I had to retrace our steps several times to make sense of it all -- and we still missed an item IIRC, though that might've been earlier on. I don't remember Moria as being nearly as bad.
  • Yeah I missed a gem. I'm pretty much counting on the gate bug now
  • I beat Super Empire Strikes Back a couple months ago but didn't bother taking a picture of it unfortunately
  • I just beat Super Pinball: Behind the Mask.
  • Cacoma Knight

  • Beat Wheel of Fortune, I don't know if this was a PC port or just a shoddy game but for SNES it is very primative
  • Chester Cheetah Too Cool To Fool.  I think the only game I beat that was shorter and more simplistic was Captain Novolin

  • ^Yeah, the SNES version of Too Cool to Fool is pretty easy compared to the Genesis version, which at least offers real challenge in a few spots. The Stage 4 boss is especially dumbed-down.

Wild Wild Quest is a different story, sort of: most of the game is much easier on the SNES, but the final boss battle is an incredible pain in the butt, especially on higher difficulties, whereas it's much saner on the Genesis. It also has maaaaaassive slowdown on the SNES.

I may get Wild Wild Quest.  I know the re-seller in town has a nice copy  of it.

And since I'm a sucker for lists...

Ten hardest SNES games I've beat for this challenge:

    #1 R-Type III

    #2 Super Ghouls n Ghosts

    #3 Earthworm Jim

    #4 Super Valis IV

#5 Death and Return of Superman

    #6 Battletoads Double Dragon

    #7 Super Turrican 2

    #8 Cacoma Knight (new)

    #9 The Lost Vikings

    #10 Bubsy

Ten easiest SNES games I've beat for this challenge (not counting the children's mini-game stuff like Mario's Early Years):

    #1 Captain Novolin

    #2 Mario Is Missing

    #3 Mario's Time Machine

    #4 Math Blaster Episode 1

    #5 Barbie Super Model

#6 Snow White in Happily Ever After

    #7 Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday

#8 Chester Cheetah Too Cool To Fool

    #9 Gunforce

    #10 Cool Spot

  • FYI (collectively), I've started working on Drakkhen. About two hours in so far. I don't remember how long it is (haven't played through the whole thing since it came out), but I seem to be making progress reasonably quickly.

OK, but don't say I didn't warn you! Actually the Genesis version is almost OK, but the slowdown in the SNES version is so pervasive, it really harms the game.

Still, I think it's fairly collectible, and obviously you'd be takin' one for the team. The game isn't rotten from the core, it's just poorly executed. Here's my strategy guide from last year for the final boss battle:

    - At the start of the race, skip to the next step. Otherwise, as Mean Eugene enters from the left after taking a hit, make sure the back end of your car overlaps the front of his, by about 30-40%. This guarantees that he won't launch a missile attack, and keeps him from getting in front of you.

    - Drive to the right in tandem with him, heading all the way to the right edge of the screen. If he paces you without stopping or jumping, simply jump straight up onto his car when you've reached the right edge (with him slightly behind).

    - If he stops along the way, he'll follow a pattern of jumping twice. Head to the right edge of the screen, and just as he jumps for the second time, jump straight up a split-second later. You'll land on his car and he'll take a hit.

Mean Eugene can take 16 hits, and you only have 3 lives (plus a bag of Cheetos if you have it from the previous level), so following this pattern is a must -- the fight is an unworkable, cheap mess otherwise.
  • List updated!
  • I did all of the mini-games for Timon and Pumba.  I don't think any of them have an ending, so I guess it's as "beaten" as its gonna get.  Didnt' waste time on a pic

  • Super Chase HQ

    Sonic Blastman 2

    King of the Monsters 2

Nice! But I think you may have missed Brock Landers's Musya and Wayne's World?

    @fox: Awesome.

  • Currently working through alien 3. Loved it as a kid and still find it rather enjoyable today!
  • Drakkhen is done!

  • Wow nice. How long/hard was it? I loved Dragon View so I kind of want to give Drakhhen a try (maybe for next year's challenge if we indeed reset the list)
  • Pretty short and, except for one or two cryptic situations that leave you unsure what to do next, relatively easy -- though it helps that I've beaten it once or twice before (I think I did an emulation playthrough around 2000 but don't remember for sure). I think it took me around 10 hours total, but it could certainly be done in half of that. Grinding is oddly pointless beyond a certain point -- equipment and luck turn out to be more important.

From what I understand Dragon View is very different -- the outdoor navigation looks similar, but the actual gameplay & combat are worlds apart. I like Drakkhen a lot, but the nostalgia factor is a huge part of that, though the music and atmosphere are often great.

EDIT: I've started working on Super Tennis again. I won the Australian Open, beating my nemesis Brian in the final, 6-4 6-4 6-3. The guy's a beast at the net and very fast, but I got past him with a combination of ridiculous serving -- I served a Karlovic-esque 42 aces in the match -- and sharply angled crosscourt shots with Down+X+Left or Right.

EDIT #2: And now I've won the Nairobi tournament and French Open, beating Brian in both finals (6-2 6-1 6-0 at the French). That puts me about halfway through the game proper, though there's still the exhibition match against Don J at the end to consider.
  • I beat the piece of shit otherwise known as Pit Fighter last night.
  • I gave up after about 20 attempts. Nice job.

I've got Inspector Gadget queue'd up, and I may give Whizz a serious shot, but I think I'm going to try and knock some 64 titles out over the next few weeks
