And the best current-gen console (Wii, 360, PS3) is?

  • As most people would say, it's all in retrospect. All three of the current next gen consoles have their pros and cons, personally I have played all three and like all of them to a certain extent.
  • Unfortunately I only own a Wii, but I fully enjoy it. As far as the other consoles are concerned I love my ps2 and never even owned an Xbox, but from what I've seen, the reviews I've read and what I've heard from friends and whatnot, if I were to pick up one of the other two it would be the 360.

Sure the extras on the PS3 are nice (bluray, etc), but when it comes down to it I'm looking for a gaming console and when I rank them I dont really even consider the things that have nothing to do with games (kind of an extreme example, but does anyone care that the Sega Saturn plays cds?). Plus, as mentioned above bluray discs are more expensive and the selection from netflix is much lower, so it will be a long time before I even start to care about bluray movies.

I also fully do not understand the "exercise" complaint about the Wii controller. If you dont like it that's certainly fine, but for the most part I dont see how it can be considered exercise in anyway. The Wii controller to me is easily the most comfortable way to play games I've ever experienced. I love the fact that I can sit in my recliner with my arms on either arm rest and just lean back while I play.

Plus, I've always been a fan of simplicity when it comes to controllers. I personally think the best controller ever made was the SNES (comfortable, simple, enough buttons to get the job done without being overwelmed). I dont feel the need for tons and tons of buttons (although I do see the advantages at times, it's not for me) and I really like the fact that the Wii controller using complicated technology has made a return to simplicity.

Plus for my money, the Wii has all the games/franchises I love. I'm not a big fan of first person shooters and GTA games are fun but far from a deal breaker for me (although I wouldnt mind taking a crack at the new ninja gaiden games and a couple others).

Also, just a sidenote, I really hate the word "fanboy". All I see it as is an immature way to yell at someone for having different opinions than you. Not that anyone here is necessarily using it as such, but Lord knows people do elsewhere (gamefaqs).

Also, another reason I like the PS3 is because I can just jump online and play some games with people if I feel the urge. I don't have to bother shucking out an extra 50 bucks for a service that I get for free elsewhere, which I see no difference in. It's just win-win for me it seems. I don't know, maybe I'm missing a bigger picture that I don't happen to understand, but for me a great controller, plenty of great games to play, and free online multiplayer (which I _rarely_ do anyway) seems solid to me.

Well now that I got a 160 GB PS3 and a small pile of games... I can't put it down.  I love this system.  Like Roth said the controller is the best one ever made.  Been sold on it since the PS1.  So glad it hasn't really changed at all through the 3 generations.  I think I like it so much because it reminds me of the feel of the NES MAX my favorite NES controller.  I haven't go online to play yet but I got it all hooked up very simply and can't wait to do it, although I used to play SOCOM on my PS2 online so I know what it's like.  The fact that it's free just makes it that much better.

Never been and XBOX fan and I like the Wii and all the cool controllers etc... but the games all seem to "kid friendly" to me.  Just my opinion.

  • Has anyone who originally posted in this thread changed their mind in the last 3 years about their current gen console of choice? I know my Wii has a thick layer of dust on it while my Ps3 gets used regularly.
  • 360 has superior graphics (Although not that big of a deal today), best controller design besides the dpad, best online features for xbox live party, and it's just over all the best. PS3 is good too, but not as good. Wii isn't even a current gen system, it's like 6.2 Generation.
  • How to start a fight on the internet.

1.) Talk about Apple vs. Microsoft

2.) Talk about Religion or Sports

3.) Talk about Nintendo vs. Sega

4.) Talk about best current gen system.

Oh also... PC Gaming > XBox, PS3 and Wii.
  • I have to say 360 and ps3. I can't really decide. I just know it definitely not the Wii.
  • Honestly, it's all subjective to opinion. We all know that, but here's my spill.

I own an Xbox 360 and a Wii. I do not own a PS3. When the PS3 came out, I didn't care because I don't like their controller design. If I don't like the controller, it just irks me the rest of the time. It's like a handicap to me. I also don't care about BluRay. If/when the time comes that it replaces the DVD format completely (keyword), at that point, BluRay players will be affordable. I'm not a big movie person, so I can wait. The BluRay player was a big selling point for a lot of people I know. For me, it just wasn't. I do not care about online play. So Xbox Live and the PSN both have no relevance to me. If I want to play with friends online, I will Skype them while we play different games single-player. I just prefer that. When I want to play multiplayer, I like it in person. I do understand that there's a novelty to online play, though. It's quite fun, it's why I like MMORPGs, but... for console gaming, It doesn't matter much. Lastly, the library. I read one post where someone said that the library of games don't matter as much as the console. I would have to disagree. You just have a fancy paperweight if you're not going to play games on it. Besides, why would you want to pay for three consoles to play all the games you want to play? I understand that's the case, it's the nature of the beast, but typically there's one console I can wait a generation or two of gaming before getting and experiencing. The only thing I want to play on the PS3 is Demons Souls and I can wait for the price of the PS3 to be extremely low before buying it.

Now as for the Xbox 360 vs. the Wii... When I first got the Wii, I thought it had a lot of potential. While I don't like motion controls at all, it is a Nintendo console. I guess we all should've seen it coming that watered down games were heading our way with the whole montage of trying to get non-gamers interested, Family gaming, etc. Now, I love the concept of family gaming and getting the non-hardcore into the realm of gaming. That's good. But in the process, the alienated the die-hard for a time. Basically for the entire middle of the Wii's lifespan. I used to think the Wii was total garbage, but... When you finally look at the games that came out, the Wii actually has a competent library: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Paper Mario, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, (I think there may be a Paper Mario game), Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (even though I prefer the Gamecube version), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong Country: Returns, Metroid Prime 3: Echoes, Sonic Colors, Monster Hunter Tri, Mario Kart Wii, and many more (such as Xenoblade Chronicles). I know too, that in comparison with the rest of the library, it's not much, but you don't have to buy the rest of the library. Though I'm certain that there's gotta be some hidden gems buried within the Wii's collection of bad games. There's also the WiiWare and VirtualConsole, which I like. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth are nice to have. I don't think graphics matter. I just think they need to be good enough to play the game and get the desired effect. I also like how the interface is set up. I haven't even mentioned that the Wii has the best backwards compatibility between all the current generation systems. The Xbox 360 does not support every Xbox game and newer PS3s do not support older games anymore. If they still produced backwards compatible systems, then Sony's PS3 would be superior. The Wii, you can play any Gamecube game. The only thing I really feel the Wii is lacking in is achievements. Those would've been nice.

As for the Xbox 360, it overall has a broader library of games, but I don't like how most of them are so "mature". I use "mature" in quotes because I think there's a misconception that if you're an adult you have to like violent video games with hi-res graphics, etc. I know that's not the case on NintendoAge, but just in the public eye. That's why I like Nintendo's charm. They have superior gameplay (when they do things right, they make it perfectly) without the added junk. That being said, there's also games like Skyrim that no one can deny is an outstanding game. I don't really count that as the "mature" category I'm talking about, though. There's some blood, but it's not excessive. I guess I'm talking about games with lots of language and graphic violence. It's just too saturated with M-rated games. But the library of games is superb. But in a way, it doesn't... I guess what I'm trying to say is that by ratio, the Xbox 360 has the best quality and quantity. There's more quality games on the Xbox 360. But the Wii, even though it has less quality games, whenever they get it right, it's easily top-tier.

I didn't cover all of my opinion because this post is already rambling and long enough, but I'll just end it with this.

    1. Wii (due to Nintendo-exclusives and meets my personal desires the most, such as Gamecube support).

    2. Xbox 360 (best overall, mainly supported by library)

    3. PS3 (best hardware, but doesn't have what I'm personally looking for)
  • Well, I bought a Wii and really hated it because of the lack of software for it and because all games were so expensive compared to the competition. When I finally decided the wii was a lost cause, I did quite a bit of research decided which of the others was better.

    - already tried the wii, and I knew it sucked

    (wii - 100)

    1) exclusives were basically nothing special.. Just Halo, which is just another fps game to me.

    (even)

    2) Sony really pisses me off with the way they do business. The way they handled the OtherOS thing, the way PSN works,

the way the system is locked out unless you accept new updates all the time, all points against them

    (PS3 - 5)

    3) Sony took out backwards compatibility, another point against them in my book. Don't commit to things you can't deliver.

    (PS3 - 2)

    4) Microsoft is Microsoft, I don't like them either, but in the Video Game market, they haven't done anything really terrible that

    I noticed.

    (xbox - 1)

    5) Price was even, price of games seem even.

    6) More people have xbox. Trading, selling locally, etc is easier.

    (ps3 - 5)

    7) Although price was even, the PS3 came with built in wifi, the xbox needed about 100$ extra one way or another to get wifi

    (xbox - 5)

    8) You have to pay to go online with xbox... and it's expensive

    (xbox - 10)

    so the rankings

    wii: -100

    xbox: -16

    ps3: -12

    The lesser evil is: PS3!
  • I enjoy my PS3, I loved the Uncharted games. I have a blu ray player with it, I like the plug in and charge controllers, and the layout is very nice.

The 360 had some great RPGs that I enjoyed and I'm a fan of Gears and Halo. I ended up buying three of the damned things because of the red rings so I just don't trust Microsoft's brand anymore. I think it's moronic that the wireless controllers take batteries and you have to drop all sorts of cash for the add ons. Am I the only one that bought an HD DVD player for the fucking thing?

I really want to pick up a Wii, I missed the boat and there are a couple things that looked really good, I was just never sold on the motion controls at all.

In the end, PS3 gets my vote. I've enjoyed all the playstations throughout the years and here I am.
  • Classy breakdown cradelit, couldn't agree more without a huge rundown tearing at 3rd parties then nintendo over the wii. First nintendo or any system I gave up caring about so much I can't even make myself play or finish great rarities like skyward sword or buy the 2nd kirby or anything else since.
  • *Graphics....PS3

    *Online Play...360

^ each have an equal amount of killer system specific tiles.

    *Functionality...Wii!!

If you mod a Wii, you have every Nintendo release at your fingertips, save DS and VB, plus many others. Will also play DVDs and stream NetFlix. And don't forget about all 1700 or so of those Sega titles!

If you game a lot...go Wii.
  • For me, it's the 360. I have never liked the interface or the slow/frequent update downloads of ps3, I have one, but just for exclusive titles. As for the Wii, well, if I wanted to jump around and play, I'll go outside.

360 has a great library of games, the controller is most comforatable for me, and of course the online play, best way to play with your friends is on 360.

All 3 systems really have there strong points, I just prefer my Xbox systems over them.
  • PS3 no doubt for me...
  • I will say one thing in favor of the 360, I like the triggers on the controller for shooters. There are a select few games that run better on 360 too, namely Bayonetta and The Orange Box. I have copies on both consoles and The Orange Box is a broken mess on the PS3, I actually bought the 360 version when I realized all the issues I had were "fixed" on it.

Really though, for the most part, I can never tell the difference graphics wise. Some of the PS3 stuff looks Godly though, Killzone 3 totally blew me away with graphics and the Uncharted games are the most fun I've had this generation in gaming so that's a big factor in my vote.

Lastly, I know this is a petty complaint, but I think the lime green cases looks like shit too, PS3 cases look more uniform and nice on a shelf.
  • The 360 is my go to console for competitive gaming. In all seriousness, the level of competition on ps3 does not seem as high.

before I get flamed, the numbers back me up. Across EVERY multiplatform competitive game, the amount of active teams / players/ sponsors is MUCH higher on xbox.

That being said...after 6 years my xbox is gathering dust., the ps3 gets so much of my love for having the best exclusives, and the PSN Plus.

Before I got heavy into collecting,.PSN Plus was amazing. A free ps1 game every two Weeks,.plus sales?

My hdd has so many classics on it, it's insane.

It was fun reading my old obnoxious comments and how lame they were . But other than that, my appreciation for the Wii has grown a lot. I am really happy with the library of games, and all the throw backs. Just the unique array of quality games is hard to find on another system. I'm talking about motion control not required games, as I still don't enjoy those.

My daughter own the living room TV and PS3. If anyone tries to put anything besides "Yo Gabba Gabba" via Netflix on she gets mad . When she lets me I do enjoy using it to play some fighters with my friends, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, play my Blu-Rays, or hook up a hard drive to play movies.

The 360 I just can't get into. There a few indie games I am interested in, but I am still held back by the wonky controller and the pay to play system. Seems like the quality of the hardware has been fixed, but their edge in exclusives has simmered down (not that I like most of the mainstream exclusives that are offered on this system or the PS3 anyway).
