Review this game: NES & SNES Movie/TV games

Alot has been said about TV/Movie games and none of it very flattering. But there are a few hidden gems amongst them....right? Let us know what you think. What about Stargate or Demolition Man, for example? Maybe Back to the Future 2&3 or Ghostbusters 2? There are a bunch of them so let's hear it!

  • Power Rangers for SNES has always been a favorite of mine. I've also been wanting to get True Lies for SNES as it looks pretty cool.
  • Friday the 13th is my favorite movie-based game ever...as well as my favorite NES game in general.
  • There are a only a couple movie based nes games I enjoyed, Jaws and Nightmare on Elm Street. Looking back though I haven't played many of these extensively. I haven't played Back to the Future, Top Gun, T2, Last Action Hero and a lot more.

The only ones I have played and didon't care for were Hunt for Red October, Terminator and Jurassic Park. I do feel I need to give JP another try though.

As for snes I don't think I've played any.
  • There's plenty I enjoy. For TV Young Indiana Jones, Bucky O Hare, Attack of the Killer Tomato's, Duck Tales, Dark Wing Duck, TMNT, Felix the Cat, Popeye, Jetsons, etc. I could keep going.

For Film Little Nemo Dream Master, Batman, Gremlins 2,etc. There are lot's more I could think of listing off.
  • I like ET on 2600, and I don't care who knows it. I'm proud to say I liked it; it means I know how to exit a hole without falling back in. I knew how too when I was 5. It's nice being a better gamer at 5 then some people in their 30s who can't figure out, if your feet are hanging over a pit when you stop levitating, you fall, so exit the BOTTOM OF THE PIT.
  • I actually thoroughly enjoyed

Lethal weapon and judge dredd on the SNES growing up.
  • Many of the Disney cartoon adaptations are good. I am particularly fond of Aladdin for the Genesis.

    Ha, awesome! Same here.

Plenty of good movie/TV games out there, and I'll cosign True Lies, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Some of the Batman and TMNT games also qualify, as well as the Disney games, etc. Goonies II deserves a mention as well.

OTOH Super Back to the Future II is wildly overrated. Not a very good game at all -- just a mediocre platformer with questionable controls, lots of slowdown, and an infusion of misplaced hype from the AVGN.
  • Willow on the NES is a really fun action RPG. It doesn't try and retell the story of the movie, but it's more like a reimagination using the basic plot and characters. Also one of the prettiest games on the system. For a solid Capcom title I don't see it mentioned very often.
  • How many of these are we planning on making?
  • I think Lion King on the NES is pretty good.
  • I always think of Goldeneye 007 as the best movie game ever, but that's N64.

On NES / SNES, the ones I enjoyed most were Aladdin / Lion King.
  • I enjoyed Batman Returns on the SNES, and *gasp Dick Tracy on NES (besides some of the others mentioned).

If you mean these "review this game" threads just as the idea comes up. If there are any moderators watching that eventually think enough is enough just let me know.
  • I enjoyed the snes star wars games, and most of the Disney games like Ducktales etc. Now NES Predator I hate with a passion.
  • Does SNES Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures count?

A few more technicalities might include Super Mario, Mortal Kombat & Prince of Persia
  • If we want to have this turn up anything unexpected we should stop stating the obvious with Capcom movie/tv-license games.

There were only a couple of those that were mediocre, and the rest were great.

    In terms of non-Capcom stuff:

Hudson Hawk is one that is fun its own way, though pretty short.

With a few changes it actually could have been an excellent game.

Alien 3 is one that also could have been great with a few adjustments. (should have played a lot more like a 2D platformer version of the arcade game for Aliens)

Gremlins 2 was mentioned earlier, and that one was actually a really good implementation and game idea.

    But unfortunately short.
  • Goonies 2 isn't a movie game but it's all we were given. If there was ever an 8bit game deserving of a 16 bit remake it's this one. Some of my fondest gaming memories are of this game.
  • I've mentioned it before, but Felix the Cat for the NES is a great platformer that definitely deserves more love. Also I can't think of a Disney Capcom game that isn't good, even the weaker ones, like Mickey Mousecapade, are fun to play.

Mickey Mousecapades is pretty rough around the edges.

Also, I really didn't care for Talespin when we played it for the high score contest.

Maybe if just progressing and beating the game (rather than high score) was my goal it would have been more interesting, but I just found it to be an unfun experience in general.

  • Did anyone mention the TMNT games? TMNT2: The Arcade Game is my favorite as well as Turtles in Time on SNES. Also Little Nemo: Dream Master is pretty awesome.
  • Wonder if biker mice from mars still holds up.

But growing up we all assumed it was the sequel to the movie.

  • Ok Here are my favs...Goonies 2, Batman, TMNT 2, Duck Tales, Indy's Greatest Adv, Super SW Empire & Jedi, Willow, Flintstones Sierra Madrock. I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of but those are the must haves IMO
  • shout out to goof troop for co-op greatness, and hook for being amazing overall.

I had a similar experience. When I was a child and found out there was a Goonies 2 game, I went to every video store looking for the movie and wondering how I had missed it. Of course I never found that moive and was like what the smeg.
  • I think Star Wars was treated fairly well in the 8/16-bit era, three tough as nails games on both systems with at least tolerable quality.

If only Sunsoft was given Terminator and Superman...

Totally forgot about Batman and TMNT 2.
  • Area 88/U.N. Squadron and Ultraman are two that come to mind that weren't mentioned previously.

Eh, it counts, since it uses characters from a licensed film property -- the "II" in the title is the only curveball.

One of the weirdest licenses I can think of is Platoon. Sure, it's a war movie, but thematically it makes no sense to turn it into a video game! It's not as unplayable as it first seems, but certainly isn't good.
