My toploader

A co-worker at my wifes work gave her a top loader and some games for free. He says the power comes on but the image is fuzzy. I am hoping to get it working but I was wondering, can you get new pin connectors for the top loaders? I am thinking maybe the games just might need to be cleaned. You guys got any suggestions?

  • I would just take it apart and give it a good cleaning..may just be dirty
  • Top loaders naturally have those vertical lines in it, so it may just be that. Try it out and tell us how it looks.

  • Well I cleaned the outside of it at least. It fires up no problem. The controller is way worn out so I might try to locate a couple of those. Video quality isn't too bad but I think it does need to be cleaned. Reset switch flat out doesn't work. I can't really complain because it was free. I'm still trying to find a boxed nes system so I think I will relegate this to the shelf just for display until I can get it working better.
  • Gosh, everytime I see the title of this thread - "Free toploader," I get all excited thinking someone is giving away a free toploader on here.

    Exactly what i do!
  • Glad you got it working.

Nintendo did indeed make new pin connectors for the top loader, but they are a BITCH to find. In fact I am the only person (that I know of) that has ever found any of them. I got 8 of them from a service center buy out once.

  • ...and you sent me two of them (I still have 'em) image
  • Changed the title so you guys won't freak out when you hit the forums, lol
  • I just got a top loader for $15 off of craigslist. The guy said that the console only shows a blue screen when it comes on. Can't wait to get home from work and start troubleshooting it.

I noticed that the bottom of the top loaders are held together with security screws. Are they the same size as the security screws on the carts? I think I have one of the bits for that size somewhere.

Hopefully if I give it a good cleaning it will work properly. Or better yet, maybe the game he tried it out with was dirty and the console actually works.

The toploader along with the other Nintendo systems (all except the original NES) us the 4.5 gamebit security screw, whereas the carts use the 3.8 which is slightly smaller. I know this for certain because i nthe past few months I've had the following systems apart:
    Toploader NES,
    FC,
    SNES,
    SFC,
    Virtual Boy,
    N64,
    GCN.
and they all use the 4.5.
If its still putting out a blue signal on the RF, you could always mod it to output AV composite, its not too difficult, theres a how-to on the gamesx website.
  • Well, I brought it home last night and played with it. It isn't a blue screen that it's producing. It's more of a flickering black screen. Immediately when I turn it on, it makes a static noise for a second or so and then just flickers a black screen.

Where can the 4.5 gamebit screws be picked up? I will definitely check out the output AV composite mod. Maybe it's something I could tackle.
  • You can get the bits on ebay for cheap if you look around a bit.

I do have some spare top loader parts if I can find that that might be of help if you figure out what is wrong.

  • I'm gonna try to take a video of the screen when I turn it on. Maybe the more tech-savvy people can give me an idea of what might be wrong.

(Assuming I can figure out how to capture video on my phone.)

I looked at the gamesx website about the out AV composite mod. It looks a little scary because I haven't ever done any soldering and know nothing about transistors, etc. Maybe I can find a friend around the area that knows something about it that could help me out.
