No idea the specifics of who worked on the game. Or was that in reference to the translation?
I bought the repro a few years back, somebody on DigitalPress made a copy for me. I definitely recommend the game to anybody that likes wresting games.
Yeah, it would be the game itself - Suda51 is the main guy behind Grasshopper Manufacture (who made Killer is Dead, No More Heroes, and so on) and I remember hearing on Retronauts a while ago he wrote the story/scenario for one of the Fire Pro games. Guess it actually gets pretty dark at the end, which is surprising for a wrestling game.
I actually think Pro Wrestling is one of the best of the black box games. The fact that everyone has unique moves, and there is a referee and cameraman following the action, as well as two announcers. That game was really impressive. Reaching the Great Puma was quite a challenge. This game does have a loophole, CPU opponents cannot dodge running attacks performed at the top of the screen.
Tecmo Tag Team Wrestling is ambitious and it's actually pretty good too. It has a training mode to "level up". It has a lot of real moves to select from, nice graphics, and an announcer that properly calls the action at the bottom of the screen.
WCW game is similar to Tecmo, maybe not quite as good, but at least all of the wrestlers are real, and it features a few obscure ones too like Kevin Sullivan.
The WWF games are all horrid, especially considering the last two came out in 1992 & 1993, they are really poor for late release NES games. No unique moves and no finishers. Kick, punch, slam, pin. Everyone is the same basically.

I would assume they were selling the licensing more than the game play. They put very little into the games knowing the WWF fan would buy regardless
No mention of Tag Team Wrestling yet? Yeah, the game pretty much sucks, but it was the first game to really do tag team matches on NES. I liked the Strong Bads

That's pretty awesome, thanks for the heads up. Kinda surprised there isn't a translated version, I know Suda51 and the FirePro series have plenty of fans over here.
There is a translation out there I'm pretty sure just haven't gotten my hands on it. Unfortunately wrestling games are the one thing I never see repros of.
You can't skip over nWo vs. WCW World Tour.... it's got some pretty sick characters in it...
Haha, but you're right.
Wrestlemania 2000 was killer, too...
I love pro wrestling, too... AND the NES... but like others I've never actually enjoyed of the wrestling games.
Don't forget WCW/nWo Revenge. That one was leaps and bounds over World Tour.
I gotta say, some modern wrestling games get way overlooked. The Smackdown vs. Raw series was really hit or miss, but as an old school wrestling fan, I'm super pleased with WWE 2K14. The level of customization is just insane, and it has a massive roster of old-school legends. The controls are very close to WWF No Mercy(actual grapple and strike buttons, no stick directional BS).

I haven't played 2k15(I only get the wrestling urge once in a long while), but I know it changed a bunch of stuff from 2k14. 2k14 really scratched my itch, so aside from an updated roster, I just haven't been motivated to buy 2k15 yet.
Although, I've heard 2k15 does incorporate a lot more NXT stuff and has an actual career mode. 2k14's season mode was very ituitive, but very bland too; shows were just a list of matches for the night. No real contact or story.
Resurrecting an old topic because I found a complete copy of Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 today.
My favorites over the years:
NES - Pro Wrestling, Tag Team Wrestling, Tecmo World Wrestling.
SNES - WWF Royal Rumble and Raw for the nostalgia. However - Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium for the Super Famicom was light-years ahead of its time. Massive CAW mode, many play modes, and loads of moves.
PS1 - Virtual Pro Wrestling (or WCW vs. the World here in the states), WWF Smackdown 2, Fire Pro Wrestling G, Toukon Retsuden 1-3 (TR1 being localized as Power Move Pro Wrestling)
N64 - WCW vs the World, WCW/NWO Revenge, WWF Wrestlemania 2000, WWF No Mercy, Virtual Pro Wrestling 2
PS2 - WWF Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain (very well rounded roster, loads of CAW capabilities).
The only NES wrestling games I've played enough to really judge are Pro Wrestling (good), MUSCLE (okay), and the WWF games. The original (Wrestlemania) is kind of clunky, but it's actually kind of fun as a tournament game...if you get a few buddies together playing it, it can actually be quite fun. Other than that, Wrestlemania Challenge was okay, but every game released after was a step down in terms of quality, with King of the Ring being the worst of the bunch (and I say that despite having a ton of nostalgia toward it after snagging a copy at a rental store as a teenager...one of my first ex-rental pickups back in the day). I would say for a single player game, go with Wrestlemania Challenge if you want a WWF game, or Pro Wrestling if you just want a fun wrestling game. There may be others worth playing, but I have no experience with them.
I don't play wrestling games much anymore. I used to play them a lot in the 90s up until I stopped watching wrestling in the early 2000s. Wrestling was at it's peak and prime during the 90s IMO. It was fun switching between WCW and WWF too because of their constant competition between each other. Back then it felt like wrestling was about the characters, the promos they cut, and the fans. Once they brought more people in and WCW became obsolete everything just felt too scripted, cheesy and rushed. Now there seems to be so many wrestlers that it's hard for anyone besides the top billers to shine. It's always been scripted to an extent but I think back in the day it felt more natural and the rivalries almost seemed real. Who didn't believe that Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels really didn't like each other? Everything seems routine and almost like they follow a formula on what to say, how to say it, how to react, and when to throw the cheap shot during face off, in-ring microphone sessions.
Back to the games...
NES: Wrestlemania and Wrestlemania Challenge
SNES/GEN: RAW, Royal Rumble, Super Wrestlemania, Wrestlemania Arcade (sort of the precursor to In Your House) - I def played RAW the most on Genesis
N64: No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000, WCW/NWO Revenge - No Mercy is the best out of the bunch
PS1: War Zone and In Your House - War Zone was the first WWF game I truly got into because it offered more than previous games plus you could create your own character
PS2: Smackdown Vs Raw - still some of the best overall gameplay of any WWF game I've played, last WWF game I've played in depth
PS3: only one I own is Legends of Wrestlemania - great game and concept but the controls are so-so
I've read good things about WWE '12 and '13 as well as the 2K series but never played them.
I have lots of nostalgia for the NES WWF games ... but they aren't really that good
The first time I played a great wrestling games was on the PS1 and it had Stone Cold on the cover ... don't remember the title though. I also really enjoyed legends of wrestling for PS2.. I'm going to have to find those games again

That PS1 wrestling game was likely WWF War Zone, which was awesome when it came out, but really hasn't aged all that well (and is generally outclassed by everything released afterward).
Oh an old wrestling thread! Let me jump in with my 2 cents.
On the SNES I LOVED Saturday Night Slam Masters. That game was freakin' amazing. Sure, no tie in license with the WWF or the WCW but the characters were over the top fun. A bit on the difficult side (although I believe the genesis version eased up on the difficulty) the game is quite easy to pick up. Great looking and sounding as well. Also, WWF Royal Rumble and Raw on the SNES and Genesis were favorites of mine to this very day.
Now, unto the NES.
The triple crown to me on the nes are Pro Wrestling, Tecmo World Wrestling, and WCW.
Want a quick romp in the ring? Go with Pro Wrestling with some nice reversals, dives out of the ring, signature moves, and a few bells and whistles like referees, a camera man, and announce team.
Want a nice single player challenge? Go with Tecmo World Wrestling with an excellent array of maneuvers, cut scene replays of various holds, and fantastic music. Mix that stuff with a play by play announcer, training mode, and a large cast of wrasslers...tough to beat.
Want a great 2 play vs match? Go with World Championship Wrestling. Customizable moves list, finishing moves, licensed wrestlers (Sting! Micheal Hayes?!) mashed with a monkey wrench, various camera angles, and intense 2 player vs tag team mayhem! 2.9! 2.9! 2.9!
Nes wrestling games that I avoid: WWF Steel Cage Challenge, WWF king of the ring, Tag Team Wrestling.
WWF Wrestlemania is actually quite fun in tournament mode with beer and some buddies. Also, as far as WWF games go I really like Wrestlemania Challenge. Their best offering which is sad. ^>^
Pro Wrestling and WrestleMania Challenge are about the best on NES. Good for nostalgia, but not necessarily great games. If you want truly awesome wrestling games, pick up an N64 and get WCW vs. NWO World Tour, WCW vs. NWO Revenge, WWF No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000. Those THQ classics are by far the best console wrestling games ever made.
I'll pile on the love for Pro Wrestling. Fun and easy to get into. Star Man owns everyone, although The Amazon is a good second place. All the WWF NES games were varying degrees of bad IMO, though I do have a little bit of nostalgia for the original WWF Wrestlemania.
All the LJN WWF games on the SNES are pretty much the same. Nothing that'll blow you away, but they're not bad and can be fun with a second player. My cousin and I used to take turns bashing a computer opponents head against the turnbuckle 9 times, tagging out, next man up bashing his head 9 times, repeat, for longer than could reasonably be considered healthy. Reason being that after 10 head bashes, an opponent falls down so you can't keep going. But with tag team play the head trauma possibilities are endless!
The PS1 WWF games are great to check out just for the character creator. You could spend hours just with that alone.
Just wanted to chime in: I actually just got back into watching WWF (WWE, I know, but old habits die hard) this summer. I hadn't watched professional wrestling in about 24 or 25 years and wanted to recapture some youth and I am currently enjoying what WWF/E is offering. Anyway, this got me a hankering for some wrestling games as well. The only one I ever owned (and still own) is the original Wrestlemania cart. I played Pro Wrestling, but never got around to getting it. I think I am going to have pick it up soon.
Anyone tried out the new WWE '16? It seems to be getting good reviews, but wanted some NA input as well!

It's good. Not the greatest, it gets boring when you have extended sessions, but in short bursts it's quite fun. Also, the unlockable legends makes for an awesome roster. Bam Bam Bigelow, Jake the Snake, the Honkey Tonk Man, Bret Hart...hell, if you wanted you could make The Hollywood Blonds ("Stunning" Steve Austin and "Flyin'" Brian Pillman) if you want to. Also, characters with multiple versions (Austin, The Rock, HHH, etc) have move sets that correspond to the time frame being represented. What this means is that if you take Austin from the early WWF years, he won't even have the Stunner yet! (He used the Million Dollar Dream at the time) It may not be much, but the attention to detail is greatly appreciated. Plus most of the elements removed from '15 were re-implemented into '16, so things like Create-A-Championship and CAW Divas are in, although a few things are still out (move editor, custom soundtracks, etc). Still, it's a vast improvement on last year's version, so I'd say it's worth trying out.
Pro Wrestling is my favorite wrestling game on the NES. I haven't played any of the others since I was a kid, but from what I remember, it seems like the WCW game was decent and the WWF ones were terrible. Tecmo World Wrestling is supposed to be pretty good, but I never played that one so I can't speak on it from personal experience.

I had a blast with all of them.
The others NES ones just came out too late.
