Any Eve Online Players Here?

Thinking about trying eve online. Does anyone have any personal tips, or a friend/buddy code they want to share?

  • No but I played Dust 514 on PS3 since the very early beta and I wasn't very impressed. The lack of detail in game and overwhelming customization with no tutorials pretty much killed it for me. The weapons were a mess. Sniping was horrible. My expectations were along the lines of something like the Mass Effect series and when it wasn't, I was let down.

I'm sure the whole thing is much better on PC but I wouldn't know.

Incase you don't know the DUST 514/Eve connection...

  • I used to play, but it was a long time ago, so I doubt I would be able to give you a code. I wonder if my account even exists anymore.

Anyway, personal tips? Screw mining, become a pirate. Or just do PvE missions. Everyone loves to rag on Eve for being a "work simulator" but it's only that way if you choose it. Sure, mining makes the big bucks but PvE/pirating is way more fun and will still get you more than enough money to progress in the game. I did nothing but PvE and had a Dominix in just a month or two.

Also, don't trust auto-pilot. Unless they've fixed it since I played, autopilot sucks and will get you killed. Warp as close as you can to a gate and go through it manually.

Last, be prepared to do a little reading and math. It's not terribly hard but if you don't know what tracking is or how it works, what your minimum and maximum ranges are, etc., you're gonna have a bad time trying to fight.
  • I used to play EVE on-and-off between 2006-2009, so what I say below might be out of date. If you want to try it out, here are my tips:

Get out of high sec space as soon as you're comfortable. Mining & grinding AI ships in high-sec takes a lot of time for low payout.

Skip low sec space, its full of trolls and griefers.

Get yourself into 0.0 sec space. That requires joining up with a player corp (guild) that either holds territory in 0.0 sec space or pays rent to a bigger corp to live in that space. The best mining and grinding is in 0.0 sec space and it is usually safer than low sec space. I was making 100mil isk per day grinding AI battleships.

EVE Online is all about PvP and forum wars. If you go into EVE expecting a robust PvE experience, you're going to be disappointed.

Aside from mining or grinding AI pirate ships, you can make money crafting ships and gear. You can make a lot of cash building high end ships and items. The downside is it takes a long time to train up those crafting skills and time spent training those skills is time lost training skills to pilot better ships.

I completely forgot about dust 514. I remember it sounding interesting when they first announced the concept, and then I never heard about it again. But yeah, I'm not really I interested in the FPS genre. I wonder if people are still playing it though.

I played it for maybe 6 months or so and it was totally a giant work simulator for me!  XD

Seems like any game I play like that I get focused on the economy, and then trying to just be the biggest richest guy in the game.  Had a freighter after just a couple weeks and started doing trade runs, which then once I had a large amount of capital built up turned into buying minerals at practically every station and hauling them for profit.  Spreadsheet warfare calculating the most efficient trade routes ( I even made macros in Excel to automatically pull data in, do calculations, and bring up the best ISK/jump return on trade routes ).  Then started an extra account to start doing PvP with.  Ended up doing a lot of free LW (looking for empty points to cap for easy LP to convert to ISK, easy money).  Then a third account with station trading and more hauling.  Then finally after around 6 months I was like "Holy shit this game is comsuming my life, and totally turning into a second job..."  So I decided to take a break and haven't been back.

I still enjoyed it a lot, and really liked the game...  but the time.... lol

Maybe someday I will hit the lottery and not have a "first job" to worry about, then maybe I will return  = D
