GameGear lcd help

I havent had a game gear since I was a little kid. Recently I picked on up on ebay. Its in pretty decent shape, and I really like it. However it has a problem with the lcd, and im not sure if this was normal, or this one is defective. When holding the system infront of your face, the screen is really dark and you cant see anything. You have to tilt it way down to see it properly. If I were to lay it flat on a table it looks great. If i hold it in my hands horizontily and crane my neck over it, its great. If I hold it up like I normally do with a gameboy, vertically, its dark as hell and I cant see anything. Is this normal? if not can I fix it or replace it?

Also im really impressed by the sound, and the power of the sound on this guy.. very nice.

    I have one just like that, I haven't been able to find anything about it, but I have a feeling its just the LCD on its last leg

    Holy shit theres a little contrast dial on the side.. I looked for one briefly when i first got it but didnt see it.. Just checked again after your comment.. thx!
