Was I smart or dumb?

Was at a con today and rummaged through a box of nintendo powers. It had the complete first 60 issues in good condition all together. The guy wanted 150 for it... I mulled over it and hemmed and hawwed and another guy walked over and bought them no questions asked right in front of me not  one minute later... Did I dodge paying top dollar or should I have scooped them up? I have no idea what that lot should go for. I know the first issue alone is worth 30-50$...

  • It's pretty condtion based but I personally would have done $150 for the first 1-60 in good shape
  • condition was probably like... an 8/10. shelf wear but no rips or tears that i could see.
  • Don't dwell on it. If you had to mull it over you probably didn't really want it all that bad. If you would have kept it in your collection but not really looked through them and enjoyed them then you're $150 richer.

    This
  • Did they have the posters?
  • erm...what con was this? also, 150$ seems like alot for magazines.

I feel this way as well.  No point in picking something up just for the sake of picking it up, especially at $150.

  • $2.50 an issue is hard to beat for pretty good condition NPs. But I you done care about reading them, or even displaying them, then not spending $150 was a wise move.
  • Well it all depends on condition and what is included. If they were in good condition with posters intact, I would've snatched them up easily. First 5 or so issues alone could sell for around $100 alone, the rest you can easily make your money back and then some, plus if you took out some posters of bigger games like Mega Man, Zelda etc, you can sell them for good money. I've sold posters from the mags for $10-$20 before for big titles.

But like others said, don't fret on it
  • For the first 60? dude the first one in good shape is worth a chunk of that already. First couple are good money. Id have done the deal if they had posters and not beat up

A grand seems like a lot for a little piece of plastic too.

As far as the OP, if you didn't have any interest in keeping them or an avenue for resale, you were right to pass them up.  Personally I would have leafed through a few to see if they had posters/inserts and jumped on that like a fat kid on a cupcake.

    good point

  • If I didn't have them already, I would taken that deal in a heartbeat.

Old NPs are great fun to read through,

and as Quest said the first issue alone goes for a pretty good chunk o change.

If you wouldn't want to read them though, you're probably better off using that money on some games instead.
  • If you were looking to keep, that would be a fair retail price for the lot.
  • On another note, just want to mention that although the lot may have been decent to flip, maybe the OP doesn't have the time or ambition to flip, just to gain $50 or whatever he would have gained.
  • I don't know if I would've gone for that lot either; the trouble is if you sell the keys then you're stuck with incomplete runs. I dabble in collecting Gamefan magazines myself, which are arguably more difficult to find, and I can tell you the magazine BINs aren't anywhere reflective of what most people are willing to pay at auction. I saw an earlier complete run of these barely creep up to $4 per issue; I made the competition pay like hell I did
