Super Mario Bros. Dethroned!

Comments

  • I'll still take SMB over Wii Sports any day.
  • Easily....that does suck though to see that fall from the top spot.
  • I just read this article and was going to post it also. SMB is still the best to me.
  • Well, at least it's another iconic moment for Nintendo, and the Wii is another solid family-wide hit for them.

When I saw the news entry, I was afraid it was going to be some disposable garbage like GTA or Halo taking the spot.
  • You got to admit Nintendo did kick butt with the wii. It apeals to people like me who dont want a controller with 2 dozen buttons. Yeah if your a graphic hound wii probally isnt you bag but the game play is great for us older players
  • That's pretty crazy.
  • Im just glad it was Nintendo and not some other garbage game.
  • I just love how the Wii is so interactive. With the rest you just sit there and do nothing really. Can't wait to try out my Active Life Outdoors when I get the chance.
  • ...if you don't count the aftermarket image
  • SMB will always be tops to me, but I am glad it was another Big N title that beat it out.

    exactly what i was thinking!
  • I was a little distressed about a story linked to within it. Playstation getting axed? hope not.
  • Wii Sports is awesome... Glad to see it was a new innovative game that dethroned SMB...

Super Mario Bros was groundbreaking back in the mid 80s.. Wii Sports is ground breaking in the mid 00's...

How is that Blu-Ray thing doing anyways? I still don't see a big section in places that would indicate success like Blockbuster and Wal-Mart, they just have token displays it seems.

If it looks like it's not going to catch on, I wouldn't doubt their discontinuing the PS line and rebooting with some cheap-to-make VR gimmick console like the Wii, but more immersive.
  • As long as Nintendo is on top, I could care less. image

Im pretty sure blu-ray is not going anywhere. There is too much demand for high-def. The reason there is not a large section, is because most stuff was originally recorded high def, so they need to make another cut of the movie or show to release it on blu ray, and even then its not worth it, because its just upscaled. Most blu ray stuff they are releasing are new movies that were made for the format. I noticed a large shift on the warez scene also. everybody is looking for high def media, no one wants dvd rips anymore.. which is understandable, dvds look like garbage, and this is 2009. All the people that subscribe to high def cable, and watch all their shows in high def.. most of them would be pretty upset when the show went off the air, and they had to buy a standard dvd, and play it back on their 1080 tv in 480. Dvds look bad on a 480, but they look really trashy on an lcd or plasma tv.

The only way i see blu-ray fading out, is if another format comes out and takes them down. It doesnt look like thats gonna happen though, there is only enough room in the market right now for one format, and sony has already established itself. Most people dont care about standard dvds anymore.. more and more of them are going to the bargain bin. Used to be only 50's tv shows, and old cartoons in there.. now its 2008 releases. I just got a pride fighting legacy box set, brand new on ebay for $1.26 . A year and a half ago they were on sale for $29.99. If you notice there alot more huge lots of dvds going out on ebay and craigs list, and they aint goign for much either. People are clearing out their collections and re buying on bluray. Second hand Blurays movies are still quite expensive, even though they are used.. its because they are in demand.

The blu ray player itself is actually selling better then the dvd player did in its first two years. In dvds first two years, they sold 1.2 million players. In blu rays first two years, they have sold 2.5 million, and this is in the middle of an economic down turn, and this isnt even counting playstation 3 sales, which are supposed to be around 8 million. Thats an insane amount of hardware in homesfor something that just came out, in a bad economy, with a rival format HD dvd, not to mention standard dvd upscaling. They also had a huge success recently with the release of the new batman movie selling over a half million copies in a single day. Netflix also has a half million people subscribing to their bluray package. In the past 6 months blu ray has doubled its market share of the top 20 titles. Blu ray is doing great!

  • well blu-ray is only just started in the retail business

i work in a hi-fi store and we sell about 1 blu-ray player every month.

But more and more people are intersted, because they're buying a tv with the full HD quality screen.. so they wanna make use of that at some point, just waiting for blu-ray to get a little more affordable image

the transition from VHS -> DVD didn't go in a few weeks either image

(Off topic) Interestingly the blu ray players may have sold twice as many as dvd players, but the discs sold around half as many.  That also includes (tiny) hddvd disc sales.  People buy the player then realize they can't tell the difference, and keep buying the cheaper dvd disks instead?
  • ^^^ Personally, I won't get a blu-ray player unless my DVD fails and no other alternative exists.

I would much rather save the money and get an upscaling player that makes my existing collection look even better. I haven't looked into Blu-Ray players, but I would think it would be in Sony's best interest to require manufacturers to NOT provide upscaling, since I'm pretty sure Sony makes money on every Blu-Ray disc sold from licensing fees.

Yea but Sony took into account what you first said. They want their customers to realise their entire dvd collection isnt worthless now, they can still upscale it to HD on their blu-ray player. The buyer wont fear having a useless stack of media in the next few years. Backwards compatibility is a must for bluray to succeed. So far all the players ive seen, including sonys have upscaling. A good upscaling player costs around 130$, a cheap bluray player 199$.. its not that big of a jump. Customers are realising they can have the technology now, but arent forced to purchase all the media on that format, they can choose the cheaper format when wanted.. and if they wanna add a favorite to their collection they can go bluray. I think removing upscaling would hurt more then help sony.
  • About a month ago somebody linked to a good upscaling player that was only $60. That's still a pretty big jump to blu-ray from there.
  • I got my upscaling DVD player for $40, but it looks great..

  • i got mine for 38$ at walmart, a philips. i dont have money for a good upscaler or bluray, but ive installed a megaton of both in homes. I only get the looks of awe and amazement from bluray tho.

on a related note tho, I dont think the wii sports resales will ever match mario
