Swaping cart backs SNES

Last night I picked up a lot of SNES games for a good price. Among them was a pretty nice copy of EVO. My issue is that the back of the cart is almost another color due to what looks like sun fading. Is swaping the back portion of the cart acceptable or is it frouned upon? I've never had an issue like this come up.

If swaping is okay with most, I'll go that route, but it brings up the question of what cart backs match EVO?

If anyone could point me in the right direction as to what most collectors follow as protocol that would be amazing. Even a list (if one exists) about which cart backs are identical would be great. If no such thing does exist, maybe it's something I'll start.

Thanks in advance guys!

In my opinion I see nothing wrong with it, I have done it myself. You have to make sure the make of the front label matches the rear. If you look at the front label it should say Made in Japan or Made in Mexico. Just match the front make with the same in the back. It would look weird if the front label had Made in Japan while the rear had Made in Mexico. There are different numbers stamped on the rear labels but I do not know what those are for. Maybe someone in this forum will enlighten us.

  • I know what you mean. I do it sometimes. No big deal. What I do is make sure the back labels at least match Made in Japan or Made in Mexico, but go a step further (if I don't have a back that matches the 2-digit number) and browse eBay item pics to get a sense of what back numbers are prevalent and then go through my collection for cheap commons to swap from.

Too bad there's not a SNES database like bootgod's NES database yet.
  • Difficult for me to do on my phone, but this topic has been brought up and discussed at length not too long ago, search the forum for it. The TLR of it is yes, most see it as acceptable.

Okay good to know! I attempted several searches before posting but didn't come up with anything... Maybe I was looking in the wrong area or was having a brain fart. Either way I'll keep digging. Thanks!
  • Yeah, it's fine as the backs are completely interchangeable, many titles shared identical backs. You would want an identical or nearly identical back of course, but they are not specific to single games so there's no authenticity issue (for all you know, the back has already been swapped!)
  • just make sure the numbers match on the back. is not necessary but thats what i do lol
