Where are my VHS collecting NA people?
Prices and competition have given me a case of the video game collecting blues. Lately I've been focusing more on collecting VHS. Who else collects tapes? What genres/companies do you look for?
I'm personally a big fan of box art so anything big box/clamshell horror. Gorgon, Wizard, Unicorn. I also love the ridiculous obscure shit you find while looking like foreign tapes (especially Spanish) with good art.

I was an 80's kid who got into horror/grindhouse/sci-fi type flicks at a pretty young age, before DVDs even existed. I either bought NES games from Funcoland or VHS tapes. I kept them all as well. They have great VHS box protectors available, much like the clear NES ones. They look slick as hell. I always look for the Vestron seal of quality. Usually a sign of B-Movie greatness!
I have quite a few Vestron tapes (Class of 1984!) but my favorite is this bizarre NASA film called "The Greatest Adventure".

I feel the same! I have about 1,000 different tapes, mostly horror films and cheesy action stuff. I haven't wanted to pony up any real money for big box titles yet, but I have found a handful of clamshells locally for cheap.
Yeah I'm a sucker for the cheesy stuff. Finding video games just isn't exciting anymore unless it's a $200+ game and how often does that happen? I find a tape like this, which isn't worth anything to anybody, and it makes my day:

What I've been doing lately is taking all the VHS films never released on any other format and converting them to DVD & MP4 for preservation. That's the scary part to me. If no one preserves this stuff, much of it will be lost forever. Still can't beat popping in a legit VHS and letting it roll though!
Video games + VHS collecting combined. I've also been collecting CEDs, since their about the same size as a laser disc artwork inside a frame. Not as cheap as VHS, but much better artwork (Album vs CD type diffrence)
For the most part I collect cartoons, i'm about 6 tapes away from having an entire theatrical release animated Disney collection. In all honesty people (well girls) are more impressed seeing that than my video game collection
I've kind of hit a rut in completing the collection so i've been buying a bunch of direct to video cartoons that are pretty horrible, but 3 for a $1 cant complain. Someday i'd like to record reviews for some of them.
I try to get as much horror as possible, there are quite a few people locally that collect as well so the pickings get slim sometimes but saying that im part of the local VHS collecting FB group and everyone is super chill and helpful in hooking others up.
And of course video game related tapes. What really got me interested were the N64 promo tapes.
I have about 2 or 3 tubs of VHS movies in my garage. They are left over from when I shut down one of my video stores in the 90's (sold the majority for 5 a piece back then).
If you have any old horror stuff in there I might know an interested parry
I've gotten rid of plenty of VHS tapes over the years, but we still have quite a few on our living room shelf
In terms of rarity I've got no real idea, but I believe this is the rarest tape I own, and I actually have two copies. Got them each for $1.
NBA Higher Ground: The 1987-88 Chicago Bulls Season.
I was the first person to ever upload it to Youtube, probably in 2006.
So many people were stunned it existed and the footage it contained, even some hardcore MJ fans didn't realize this tape exists.
It really is probably the best NBA video I've ever seen, and I've probably seen every one that was put on VHS.
This tape has so much footage that even in the current day you NEVER will see anywhere else.
This was Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant's rookie season, and Jordan's first MVP season, as well as the only year he was Defensive Player of the Year.
I wonder how many VHS movies are still out there that never went to DVD?
You can see I have Problem Child 2 from 1991 on my shelf - I know that is one that has still never been released as a DVD.
There are certainly tons of wrestling PPV's that never went to DVD too. Even WWF St. Valentines Day Massacre from 1999 never had a DVD.

No Horror. Even back then it sold like hot cakes!
here's a cool one, the Human Duplicators with Richard Kiel (the actor that played "Jaws" in the bond films):
It loses a lot in becoming a jpg, you have to imagine it as a 2.5 foot tall painting.
Its the original painting used on this version of the box

another VHS by MJ you should find is called 'come fly with me' <-- a real 90's treat
i mostly look for classic E X T R E M E sports tapes: demos, mountain boarding, skating, BMX, etc.
^ they're usually hilarious simply for the bad commentary or poor acting, as is most amatuer stuff.

Definitely. At one point I had them all, but most of them are on the Ultimate Jordan DVD so I thinned out my collecting. Higher Ground never had a release on any DVD, and the VHS is very low run. A video recapping the season of a team eliminated in the 2nd round of the playoffs is super unheard of.
