Game won't save

So I recently bought a N64 game and it would not save. I took it apart and it looked like someone had done a poor job of trying to solder a battery holder where the battery used to be. The area around the solder joints looked burnt. The battery holder was partially broken so I replaced it with a working battery. After the replacement, the game would still not save. Is there anything I can do to fix this like drawing on connectivity lines using a pen made to do so or is this just completely fried?

  • Did you try to replace it with just a battery or another battery holder?
  • I replaced it with a new battery holder and a new battery
  • I'm curious, did replacing the holder and battery fix your save issue?

The burnt region you mention sounds normal to me. If it appears light-to-dark brown, it's most likely just rosin from the solder.
  • What game is it?

Are you sure you put the battery/holder in the right way? Are you sure the battery is good? Did you try a 2nd battery?

Use a multimeter to check the traces and make sure they are still making connection from battery to where ever it goes. If it really is burnt there might be some damage to a trace.

Oh, and pictures. We always like to see pictures.
  • good point, Mog. Polarity
  • I don't currently have a multimeter to test it, but here are some pictures. I have the polarities in the correct orientation though.

  • If there is damage to the trace could I bypass it by soldering a wire from the battery points to one of their connections?
