N64 boxes grey vs white cardboard

I started trying to really improve my collection, take note of condition issues, and prepare to get started upgrading things. i've noticed that some of my N64 boxes have white cardboard, while others have a light grey cardboard. See the picture below to see what I mean. What I'm worried is whether or not one of these are fake? Does white cardboard always = reproduction, or was white ever used in the factory for maybe third party/second party games and late print runs?

The Harvest Moon 64 pictured below isn't as perfect as I would expect for a reproduction, there are some moderate issues like creases and some crushing. From what I've seen before, most reproduction things seem to be "too good to be true". Maybe someone else could check their Harvest Moon 64 box and see if it matches mine?

  • Some manufacturers used different cardboard, my harvest moon is white.

that's what i was hoping, and i'm glad to hear your copy is white too. does anyone know an easy way to spot if a box is fake? i thought i had heard somewhere before that white cardboard = reproduction, but if that's not always the case there must be other ways to tell them apart.
  • Might be for other systems, but there are several I know for a fact that are white for N64 and are real. Typically the low quality repro boxes you should be able to tell. The high end ones, not really sure.
  • White is fine my castlevania I bought new back in the day has white cardboard.
  • thanks for the replies, i was worried i had a bunch of expensive boxes to replace! glad to hear that white is normal. i wonder if there was any sort of system to which ones were white...i might look into that once i have a more complete collection, maybe put together some statistics about weird variant-like differences.

oh one other question comes to mind, though it's not as important to me as the box one. does anyone know if the cardboard support inserts that say "N64" instead of "NUS 06" (or other numbers) are reproduction? i've seen a fair number of removable box supports that just say N64 on them and they seem to be made quite a bit differently than the NUS 06 ones, different kind of cardboard, perforations look a little different, they seem to be a bit more rigid. i've also got some with no number/wording at all that also look a little odd. any thoughts?

The box inserts that say N64 are aftermarket ones.
