NES Top Loader Troubles

So out of the blue, my little Top Loader began having issues. The picture is displayed in Black and White and the only sound coming out is from the TV itself. I'm hoping this can be fixed... so can it?

And no, it's not the cords. I plugged in my regular Nintendo and it worked fine.

  • wiggle the av cable and see if this changes anything?
  • Is it hooked up with the RF cable? Top loaders don't have AV output.

I'd say the RF converter is to blame most likely. I'd have it AV modded.

Can the RF converter be replaced? I would rather not mod my Top Loader.

  • Yeah it can be replaced if that is the issue.

What is the CH 3-4 switch set to?
  • In your case it could be a faulty RF box. I actually have a pile of original RF boxes.

Though the work involved with removing and reinstalling it requires specialized tools.

May as well mod it for composite, it can be performed without drilling or adding distracting jacks to the case.

Also the 3-4 switch can be dirty and cause your issue.  Try moving the switch repeatably, a drop of electrical cleaner would be nice too.

  • That was the problem, AaronE. A few years ago I was messing around with video setup and found out that the thing would not play on Channel 4 no matter what the switch was set at so I left it on Channel 4 not thinking much of it. Why today of all days it decided to work again, no clue.
