Need help starting a collection plz

Hey guys. I am starting my NES collection and I need some tips and pointers. I don't have many games right now though, if you want to see the very few games that I do have in my NA Collection thingy that I just finished. I do realize that now I will never  have money again for anything else lol. So Any pointers or tips would be awesome.

You have to define what you goal is..... titles you love, games you love to play, loose licensed collection (677 games), CIB collection, complete collection, unlicensed............... there is just so many ways to go. You first must define what type of collector you want to be then we can send you a few tip & tricks.

  • Its usually better if you just collect games you like playing, or go for a series you enjoy like maybe Mario, Zelda, Megaman, or Castlevania of course doing series you'll end up going for those titles on other consoles as well.

Personally I accumulated over 300 carts and probably played 20 of them so I gave up the chase to collect all of them and purged my collection and just collect games I like manly as I had an important even happen I needed money for and second quite a few games I just cannot justify the price for (e.g. Little Samason, Bonk, etc)

Now if you are wanting to go for the goal then buy, sell and trade and focus what income you make from game sells towards your collection, but you definitely want to decide if you want cart only or complete in box as there's quite a lot of price variables with each carts are cheaper and cib is quite a bit higher.

    ...wow, what a ramble. :/
  • Buy in bulk. Keep what you need and resell your duplicates to keep buying in bulk. It takes a little initial investment but after awhile this method starts to pay for itself.
  • I plan to start with getting the games I like, then work on the games that are easy to get. After that, I wanna try finding the rare ones. I want to get all the licensed NA NES games, then get the Japanese Famicom games
  • Make lots of friends. I can not tell you how many friends have helped me in HUGE ways to reach my goals. Here on NA, at conventions and even at the local game shops. Don't expect them to give you anything huge deals and when it does happen you are going to be thoroughly surprised.

    Oh, and thank them too...
  • Way to go Mang, dream big! That will be a major accomplishment completing both US and Japan releases.

And like Beni stated making friends goes a long way. Unless they're cornballs.
  • Step 1: Buy an Everdrive

Step 2: When you find a game you really like and would like to own an original of, check and see how much it is, and if its in your budget, try and buy it at a reasonable price.

Owning an everdrive will completely curb any craving to "buy it all and buy it now!" Plus, they're super handy when wanting to take it somewhere else (friends house or w/e)

Also, another minor tip might be to look for a certain sub-set of games and try and collect those first; such as Mario games, black box games, RPG's, Castlevania games. It'll give you a smaller target to aim at, and be much easier to hit. But again, I wouldn't buy anything you aren't actually going to play. Having a small collection of really solid titles is a lot more noble a cause than having the hundreds of bargain bin games that will only adorn your shelf and collect dust.
  • One method that has worked best for me is frequenting thrift stores. Try hitting up places that don't keep up on current trends and still think NES games are worth $2.00. I have a few places here locally and I can't even begin to describe the deals I've gotten by going about it.
  • I will try thrift shops and flea markets to get the more common games. And I am wanting to start with the Mario, Lolo, and Zelda games first, then work my way up to the ones that I never heard of. Thanks so much everyone for all of your insights and suggestions.
