Watching The Wizard for the first time

I wanted to see this when i was a kid and never got around to it so I picked up a DVD to check out. I'm about 40 minutes in right now, kind of slow so far, with copious amounts of cheese. Vintage Christian Slater/Fred Savage.

  • Billy Zabka should have been the villain.
  • one of the greatest movies of all time. makes me cry every time at the end. he finally gets to "california".
  • still never seen this....

  • neither have I
  • man i love that movie.. i must have seen it 30 times by now. anyone who hasnt seet it go get it.
  • Best part of that movie is the sound track. And the one-liners.

They did a good job of fitting in appropriate music.
  • Still never seen this, but didn't they show exclusive Super Mario 3 footage before the game was ever released? If that's true then I would have loved to see this movie when it was originally released.
  • isn't the highest level of posts called "the wizard" obtained when one has posted 10,000 times?

just around the corner for NGD....
  • I saw it on TV, though it did show me the hidden whistle trick in the world 1 fortress. The movie has plenty of erroneous situations as far as gameplay goes for certain games. Still, it is an okay film.

I was just wondering the same thing!
  • My favorite movie of all time. Love the story, the characters are all likable, the dialog is great, the music is really good, and even though they don't quite get everything right when it comes to the games, it doesn't take away from the excitement, they're presented well enough. I can relate to the kids in this movie, brings me back to when I was around that age, playing Nintendo for the first time. If it were anything other than Nintendo, perhaps about arcade games in general, or Sega, or even a pinball movie, it would still be a great, fun movie, granted much of it played out pretty similarly, but I do think with it relating to my favorite hobby does help with me holding it so dearly above all other movies.
  • I saw bits and pieces of this when I was (ahem, much) younger. I'd love to pick up a copy one day, just to be able to watch it and say that I've seen it.

Yep.  The wizard is the next on the list.  Then Dain will have to create something else, lol.

I need to find someone to burn me a copy of this movie, I have never seen it in a rental store and I don't really want to buy one.

  • NGD, if you know your way around torrents its easy to find image

i got my copy waiting to be played.. just waiting for a special occasion image
  • I enjoy the movie quite a bit. I bought it a couple months ago, just to say I own it.

The only thing that bothers me about the movie is the little kid saying "California" all the damn time, but other than that, I can tolerate it when Fred Savage's dad is up the next morning playing TMNT. That is pretty cheesy. image
  • It was really just a looong commercial for SMB3 before it came out... And it worked. My brother, my best friend, and I saw it in the theater and left with nothing less than the strongest desire to go buy that game. And yes, I do own a copy of the dvd now. image
  • I own it.... on VHS!!!!

Great movie. Bust it out when you have a couple people over sometime. It's always a hit. But yeah, I have to agree, Beau Bridges sucks ass at pretending to play video games.
  • ^^^ I have it on VHS as well. Picked it up a for a couple of bucks maybe 7 years ago, now. I was home from college and went to the video store. I saw the game sitting on the shelf, went up to the counter, and asked them "when was this last rented?". The date in their computer was 5 years prior, so they were happy to free up the shelf space.
  • We need to have an NA viewing of this one of these nights...they everyone who hasn't seen it can finally discuss it!
  • "The power glove. It's so bad!"
  • Billy Mitchell and Lucas need to battle it out on the NWC cart. But rules would state, Billy Must use the NES Advantage, and Lucas the Power Glove.
  • i've seen parts of the movie, it's pretty cool for a two hour nes commercial
  • movie sucked ... or at least that was my impression as it always angered me that they received warp points when clearly the game had no warp points

That provides an idea for a HILARIOUS contest.

At the next NA Expo...do an NWC contest to see who can get the highest score wearing the Power Glove.

Brilliant. I'll bring mine. This is exactly the kind of surprise contest we need.

Making any contest that some people can be just really good at because it's their favorite game is boring (SSBB, for instance) - but picking a game that's everyone's favorite and making them play with like the U-force or whatever, that's exciting.
  • Yeah, U-Force would be an option, too. That would be brutal. Or the awful helmet that you have to yell into the microphone.

We definitely need a couple of game competitions that force us to give some love to the most hated and despised peripherals the system has to offer. It would really level the playing field and have hilarious consequences, I'm sure.

If we planned ahead, we could find a non-functioning Power Glove (well, do ANY of them REALLY work? image) and spray it gold and make a trophy to commemorate the event.
