Super Nintendo acting weird

So I bought a Super Nintendo with a few games but the games are glitchy . On donkey kong when you switch characters they disappear and then reappear . It won't save either . I tried the other games and the same thing glitchy. I borrowed a friends snes and all the games works perfectly fine. Any help because this

  • Clean the games and the system and you'll probably be fine
  • I have cleaned the games but how do I clean the system ?
  • I have never had any luck getting a SNES console that has glitchy graphics to work any better.

Ive taken them apart cleaned everything changed pins and other screw on parts but I think when they glitch it's a problem with one of the chips on the motherboard.

Hmmm well that sucks lol it plays the game but you can see it has glitches and then it doesn't play some of the games

  • For cleaning the system try putting rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and rubbing the contacts in the game slot, then wait for it to dry. That worked for me on my NES when it was acting up.
  • I had a DKC2 cart that did something like that, it would freeze up when you switched characters or reset or something. It turned out I had a corrupted save file, started a new one and never had a problem again. I'd suggest wiping every save and trying fresh. Could also be the cart is bad, if that's the only cart that gives you trouble.
  • Sounds like either the system needs new caps, one or more of the system connector pins are dirty and cannot access data, or the worst being the PPU is shot.

How can I check if it's the caps ?

  • If you are an electronics hobbyist and/or have soldering skills you would have to disassemble the console down to the motherboard and test each cap using a capacitance tester but those can be pricey. Otherwise, replacing the caps is the preferred panacea if you even want to try salvaging this unit. I had similar problems related to a cheap SNES from CL where parts of the foreground graphics layers would not appear or glitch out (ie. duplicate sprites in Street Fighter 2, Dhalsim's head being invisible), but the squiggly lines in my video output was a tell-tale indicator that the caps were most likely causing the problem. I replaced all of the caps as a hobby project and it fixed both my AV output and glitchy graphics. Unfortunately, the SNES uses surface-mounted caps which really is a PIA to remove unless you have a heat gun as you have to be careful not to rip off the solder pads.

  • ^ I use an old t-shirt. You can also follow up with a can of compressed air and blast the pins of any debris, dust, fibers etc.
