2) Lost Levels by faaaaaar. I like difficult games that are FUN, and Super Mario 2 USA didn't even feel like a Mario (yes I know it is Doki Doki Panic).
The frog suit IMO is the only thing in the game that actually changes Mario's physics in a major way. He really rocks out with his little frog cock out in the frog suit in some levels.
The tanooki DOES let you stop forward motion in mid-air by turning to stone, so if you're going to miss a platform and are quick, you can save yourself.
But for hands-down favorite mine would be the unlisted Kuribo's Shoe!

I hadn't beaten from 1-1 until recently, and I really like SMB2, the play control on toad is the best in almost any game, ever.
I've beat SMB forwards and backwards and whatever way you want to beat it. In fact, I just played a few days ago with my friend and beat it in like 8 minutes using warps of course.
I like SMB 2 Japanese version just because it's freaking hard. I know the extra lives tricks and I still can't get past the last level or so. I need to play it some more when I get some extra time. The Doki Doki SMB2 is pretty cool and fun too though.
Hammer Bro Mario is pretty sweet cause you can only get him once I think in SMB3. Tanookie suit Mario is pretty cool as well though. All of them were well done IMO.
EDIT:
Forgot about it until I read some of the other posts. Karibu shoe all the way. That was like the tightest thing ever.
^^^^^^^Too bad you only get it for one level. I gotta say tanookie is my favorite. Turning into stone is the shit! The hammer bros. one is a close second.
^ if you use a game genie to access the developer's menu, you can get the shoe in any level, on demand. The cheat also lets you cycle through all powerups/suits just by pressing select. Most fun ever.

That's sounds freakin' awesome! Too bad I have a top loader, and game genies for those are hard as hell to find.

You can use a regular GG, you've just got to pop your toploader's cherry. The board's fatter than a standard NES game board, and will stretch your pins. Not the best idea if you've got a pristine console, but I've not had any problems after using it on my toploader (which was pretty well stretched out to begin with). I measured it one day with a micrometer, I've got the numbers laying around somewhere.
I can beat the original SMB any way you want. I actually filmed myself doing it (with warps, obviously), in 5 minutes and 28 seconds! Relatively close for the record (I was going for it), but it just started pissing me off. In my best filmed run (of 5:28), I got stuck infront of a hammer brother for like 15 seconds, which ruined me.
I like both the Japanese and American version. Actually, I don't even really "like" the Japanese (SMB2j) version very much because I never played it as a kid. The actual US version has a place in my childhood, as different as it may be. Bu

This is really fast. I think I remember your mentioning this before. My fastest is 5:46 with one death. I only tried for about a week solid though, and didn't practice the hard parts on emulation before going into the game, so I obv got a lot more practice on 1-1 and 1-2 than I did on bears like 8-3!
I've beaten SMB 1, with and without warps many times over. A halfway-decent speed run for me lands me in 5:30 to 6-minute territory, though I've done it in right about 5 minutes before. I prefer the Japanese SMB 2 to the American SMB 2. In SMB 3, I prefer the Hammer Brothers Suit (there was once I played and I had 3 of them...only time I ever had 3 Hammer Brothers Suits, out of the several hundred times I've played the game over the years).
I don't know if I've played SMB after I passed it the first time. With warps, of course. I'm not even sure if I've ever played worlds 5 6 or 7. I never really liked playing the game that much in the first place, after the initial 'wow' factor wore off.
I much prefer SMB2u to SMB2j. Heck, I think I even prefer it to SMB3.
I dig the hammer suit. Whenever I get it, I'm scared to use it just in case I lose it too fast. So I typically end up not using it. Plus I usually start getting bored around world 6 if I'm not warping.
1. Beat it many times, all 3 NES SMB games, no warps. 2. I love SMB2, USA version (original version, our Lost Levels is too much the same as the first SMB, and is just too friggin' hard to be fun) 3. Tanooki Suit (same flight and tail whacking abilities as Raccoon but can also turn to stone for temporary invulnerability)

Yeah, 8-3 is the worst... and is where I got trapped behind the Hammer Bros. The biggest problem with 8-3 is that the level is not identical every time (so you can't plan for it). The Hammer Bros. change their placement every time you go through it, so I never know which line of bricks to jump on. Pick the wrong one and I'm screwed (which I did)

Yea that level is the level that always gives me trouble when doing a speed run, I hate it.
Will - even though we don't know what it is, there must be something in-game that dictates the placement of the hammer bros. It might take a serious hacker to determine what that is...but if you knew it would be a powerful tool.

2) USA SMB2
3) Tanooki suit!

3) None of the above! Kuribo's Shoe forever!!!!
2) Mario 2 USA is a much better game. Mario 2 JPN just feels like a remixed version of Mario 1.
3) Hammer Suit
Lost Levels is better IMO
Tanookie suit is the shit

I've never played the Japanese version of SMB2
Tanookie was my favorite of those listed

3) Hammer Bros Suit
Hammer Bros suit, though the Pwing was a close second.

Lost Levels, though I think I'm one of the few people who liked SMB2US
Raccoon
I prefer the Japanese version.
Raccoon Mario.
