Shinobi 3 - Genesis

I am going back and playing this game for the first time in many years and hooolllyy chriiiiiiiiiiiist does this game ever kick some serious ass.

  • The controls are excellent especially with only 3 buttons and typical Genesis controller annoyance.

  • Music is just incredible with some very catchy songs and some of the best the system has to offer.

  • The levels and enemy/boss designs are very unique and stand out from other action/platformers.

All of these components come together to make a very atmosphereic and addicting game, I think this game knocks it out of the park and is the peak of the series.

  • Dude, this game rules. Doesn't Batman make an appearance as a boss?

I think that was in Revenge of Shinobi.
  • That was Revenge of Shinobi

Holy shit we just literally posted at the same exact time.
  • Ah thanks for the correction dudes! I always get those games mixed up.

No worries man its a Nintendo fourm afterall!
  • Revenge of Shinobi is quirky and fun.

Shinobi III is a whole different beast. Much more serious tone.

Double-tap to run forward, use your sword. Jumpkick diagonally down, double jump and throw 5 shurikens, wall jump a la Ninja Gaiden, really impressive parallax scrolling in some levels even on par with MUSHA.

Very slick game. If you've never played it you're missing out.

    Definitely, lol.

I grew up with the Genesis (got my model 2 in '93), but never had Shinobi...always had to rent it! The chronology of that series always confused the hell out of me lol.

  • My first Genesis  I bought used with a bunch of games. Revenge of Shinobi was one of them. Great game.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation of the controls... much better than mine as I wrote somewhat impuslively.

This game truely is "slick" I don't know..... this game is very organic in that sense.
  • i got revenge of shinobi cib for 11$ cib, excited to play it, is it identical to shinobi 3?
  • Love shinobi 3. I actually just traded it to another member here. My favorite level music is the horseback level. I think it's 2 or 3. So damn catchy and gets stuck in my head just thinking about it.

I like the track that comes right after the horse chase level... "Ninja Soul" in the menus.

It may be one of my top 16 bit songs of all time.

  • Shinobi 3 owns, I rented it a ton. I feel like I might have preferred Revenge as a kid (I mean, Batman and Godzilla were in it!) but I was super impressed with the art and music in 3. I feel like it was one of the last Genesis games I ever rented, around the time of Comix Zone and Vectorman (even though Shinobi 3 was a few years prior to that).
  • I've been trying to beat this game on expert mode. I can get to the final boss without much trouble and then like an idiot I keep screwing up on him. He's supposed to be easy.

They could have had the difficulty for expert mode be the default difficulty setting. The default energy bar is way bigger than it needs to be.
  • I will have to check this one out. I got Revenge of Shinobi not too long ago and dig it big time but I could not seem to get into Shadow Dancer. I was wondering about this one... Far out.

I think that "Shadow Dancer" is a near perfect arcade type game with very attractive graphics for a Sega Genesis game, but "Shinobi III" is much more in the style of "Revenge" if that is what you want.

Just be sure to play it on expert or it will seem way too easy after being used to "Revenge"... at least until the last couple of levels. You can also try beating it without using any magic.

Sir, for me to even manage to turn the machine on and put the game in properly requires magic

Oh, P.S. - Thanks, this is precisely what I need to know. It is good to know that Shadow Dancer is a bit different from the other two on the Genesis. Sweet!
  • Shinobi III is awesome, but I prefer Shadow Dancer. It has the arcade feel.
  • Yeah. "Shadow Dancer" is closer in style to the arcade "Shinobi" with the one hit deaths and swarms of annoying ninjas with blades that flip around at you. "Shinobi III" is a return to the style of "Revenge".
  • Shinobi III has one of the closest final boss battles I've seen in a game. That color changing, waving background is to fun to look at.

The boss battles in that game are all amazing, I honestly would say it is one of the most perfect platforming-action games of all time... easily one of the best of the 16-bit era.....The game is really cheap for how good it is to which is awesome.

  • I made the game freeze on a boss battle the other day. I triggered the invincibility magic right when the stage 6-2 boss, the Kabuki dude, was changing into his second attack mode. It's like the game got confused and got stuck there. What an irritating glitch to happen so late in the game.

That is shitty man, can't say that has ever happened to me and I used that move on him a lot.

  • I don't know whether it was just a software bug or if also my Genesis was acting up. If it's a software bug then it is triggered by doing magic right when that boss is changing forms.

Would not be odd, I have had similar issues happen when you just press the wrong thing at the right time and it can't comprehend what is going on.

Typically when two or more animations happen at a specific time.

  • I finally single credit cleared "Shinobi 3" in so-called expert mode. Yay. I still had five lives left.

The trick is to get to the final boss with a POW and at least one invincibility magic and just wail on him.
