Like many people in here, I'd never even heard of the Turbo/PCE until I got seriously into collecting a couple of years ago. By a kind of fluke, without really aiming to get one, I ended up getting a recapped PC Engine Duo in a trade with another member a few months ago. It ended up sitting in a box for a bit, since I recently moved, but I'm planning to bust it out and purchase an Everdrive asap. In between jobs right now, so when I'm not working on applications, I've been reading up about games on the system. Super excited to start playing soon. I'm particularly stoked to try out the Neutopia games, since the original LoZ is one of my favorite games, and these seem to really fall in line with that gameplay/style.

I just looked through thread and didn't see much about burning discs. Anything I ought to know? I'm thinking of starting off with that, since a stack of nice CD-Rs won't cost as much as the Everdrive itself (again, rationing myself till I snag a steady income).

Make sure they are good cd-r (taiyo yuden) and you burn them at slow speeds.  The turbo can be picky to read cd-r's since these lasers are 20 years old.  I ended up replacing the laser in my Duo and TG16 CD and now they play anything I throw at it.

Thanks for the response. All right, glad to hear from a user on this thing. Consider those Taiuyo Yudens a done deal. Where did you get your replacement laser? I haven't tested mine out yet, but maybe I'll grab one sometime as a backup, even if it functions. Was it difficult to replace yourself?

Sorry to inundate you with questions. I'm also Googling and whatnot, but it's always nice to hear from somebody one-to-one.

No worries ask away....the laser for the PC Engine duo is easily availible on eBay and is still being manufactured ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-CD-Optical-Laser-Lens-for-Pc-Engine-DUO-DUO-R-DUO-RX-console-/112063224920?hash=item1a177d1c58:g TYAAOSwAYtWHWBp).  Not hard at all to change you just have to be sure you snap all the casing back correctly so the disc aligns afterward.

The TG16 cd laser is a pain to change and is not made anymore.  Old discman from the early 90s usually have the laser that is needed for this.

Rad, thanks again. I'm sure that info might be useful for other peeps, too. And I'll definitely be ordering a laser or two to have on hand for the future. Groovy.

  • I noticed that locating a fairly simple and effective S-video mod for the pc engine is impossible,

so I put together a diagram for the modification.

This mod seems to output a very clean signal, probably the best (but maybe not the simplest)

    improvement over composite and RF.

Hmm I have never seen this s-video mod before. The one I did is below but the end result is a really clean image.

There's also this if you are opposed to hardware mods. Pretty much useless for CDROM attachments though.

I looked into that but like you said it's useless with the CD drive. I ended up just adding a small s-video out and using the audio from the cd base.

I do not doubt that the mod you used is good, but there is one thing that separates mine from yours.

With the mod in my PCE, the Luma is separated from the Chroma by removing the R134 resistor. There's

actually a switch on my system which allows me to change from S-video to Composite, rerouting back to the

regular circuit via resistor when on Composite mode. What you're getting is a Chroma/Luma and Luma signal,

whereas mine is Chroma and Luma.

So far I'm really enjoying dead moon, air zonk, Raiden, blazing lazers and boxyboy. Trying to spend some more time playing all of them but time has been tough to come by.

Love all those myself! Boxyboy gets tough! I think i got to like level 35 or so but forgot to write down the code! Still havnt beat Air Zonk or Raiden. Have been able to 1CC Blazing Lazers & Dead Moon tho! Trying to go for a higher score in Dead Moon. I hear if your take out the asteroids you get mad points but i havnt been able to figure a way to take em out consitantly. Air Zonk i always just get hung up on the final boss! He's such a Bitch!

I've had my eye on Devils crush. I'll have to keep and eye out for time cruise.

Both are awesome titles. Time Cruise is much more expansive than DC with a total of seven screens (not counting bonus stages) loosely arranged in the shape of a hexagon, but Devil's Crush with only three screens (not counting bosses) is arcadey bliss and pinball perfection.

If I could find one fault with Time Cruise, the pinball area is almost too vast and games tend to last a long time bouncing around between screens. Still it is a totally unique title unlike any other pinball game I've played. There are themed areas based on a clock set in past, present, and future.

Alien Crush is also very good but has only two screens, and literally everything good about Alien Crush is made great by Devil's.

All three pinball games are worthy of any Turbografx collection.

One thing to watch out for that may cause some confusion; there is another similarly named TG-16 Hucard title called "Time Ball." It a sucky game in no way related to pinball genre or Time Cruise. Avoid.

If you love the Crush series, Tengen later released a Genesis port of Devil's Crush called Dragon's Fury, and a platform specific sequel called Dragon's Revenge. There is also a sequel to Devil's Crush exclusive to Super Famicom, called Jacki Crush. It is every bit as good as Devil's Crush and totally worth checking out this obscure title if you're into imports.

A lot of great information there. Thanks for the tips!

  • Four more games since last post. Also, I noticed that the so-called "protective covers" can form a film over the

contacts, making the games inoperable or buggy. I placed all of my hucards on top of the covers and let the

back of the manuals protect them. Haven't had any issues since.
  • I'm approaching one year of collecting PC Engine and I have found it to be the most enjoyable platform to collect!

It may be because of the arcade quality of the games or something as insignificant as the novelty of the console/game size.

It could also be due to my love of shmups which the system is so well known for.

Does anyone agree that they've enjoyed collecting for the TG-16/PCE? Moreso than most if not all other platforms?

    A. Snapped up at a single yard sale hosted by a charming old lady who let me have it for $100, buttering her up the entire time with a conversation about Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and Coca Cola memorabilia. As I had just loaded my catch into the rear of my hatchback, I caught sight of a younger gentlemen blearily lumbering out of the house questioning what was going on, observed a moment later in my rearview mirror agitatedly pursuing me on foot as I sped away.

    B. Steadily acquired over years of selective trades and purchases until 2007 or so.

Whichever turns you on more is the answer.

I defintely did in 2015! That was the year i dove into TG16 and was all about it! Im glad you've had fun with it! Really fun system with alot of good games to play! I shifted gears in 2016 but hopefully i'll pick up a few of the titles i've still been wanting in 2017. And maybe finally get a Duo!

It is an awesome system to collect for. I have a nice set of Hucard only games for my Turbo. I'm mostly finished collecting for the time being as I have most of the heavy hitter SHMUPs that aren't lame or brutally unfair.

Most of them are CIC (Card in Case) except for certain US titles that didn't originally come in a jewel case, but I have the Hucards stored in a baseball card binder (the cases are all stacked safely on my game shelf). The binder is definitely handy but you gotta take care not to invert the binder or the Hucards will fall out everywhere...

  • Still actively collecting TG-16, I think I am going to stop picking up random PCE I am actually selling a whole bunch (I am willing to trade too, make an offer!)

  • Here is my TG-16 stuff.  I'm strictly a CIC collector, I had a few common boxes but traded them away in the past.  I've gotten away from actively adding to my TG-16 collection - the only game I've added in the last 2 years was Legendary Axe 2.  Would like to get back into it someday.  Not pictured is my TG-16 Everdrive:
