  • I have just started collecting for tg16 in the last few weeks. Games are pretty much non existent in stores locally. I don't really know anyone local to me who had a tg growing up. Looking forward to the journey of collecting more of these games. Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

The only advice I'd give is to collect for PC Engine over TG16. There are over 280 hucard games alone on the PCE

as opposed to TG16's small number of 94.

  • How did I miss this thread? LOL! Like many Nintendo fans, my first exposure to the TG-16 was on Wii Virtual Console. I picked up my first Turbografx in 2014 out of a desire to expand beyond the popular systems. 2014 was year of the underdogs for me. Turbografx and 7800 were my first two "underdogs". I also got a Powerbase Mini from StoneAge Gamer that works great on my model 1 Genesis so no need for an SMS.

Anyway got a Turbo on eBay for $100 bucks and then started shopping games and was overwhelmed by sticker shock. So my first investment was an Everdrive. Currently and for the forseeable future, my collection is Hucard only. I also picked up a db Electronics PC-Henshin region adapter earlier this year which quickly paid for itself.

  • I posted this over on the AtariAge Turbografx thread the other day. Don't hate me.

Here's the slick repro cards from tg16pcemods.com run by user turbokon over at PCenginefx.com forums. Clamshell cases are about the size of PS Vita. They are made from sandwiched PCBs and have a cold, slick, ceramic feel to them, unlike the plastic Hucards. Note also the complete absense of black PCB area underneath the pins which is present on all official Hucards.

They also have "turbo repro" printed on the backs in gold lettering. Please don't hate me for posting these but I feel like people should know how the new repros look. I don't condone scammers and anyone trying to pass off repros as the real thing on eBay should be reported.

  • I just picked up neutopia, dragon spirit and double dungeons. I'll have to post up a pic once I have all recent orders in hand.

It seems every topic I post in I get dogpiled pretty hard. Like I started a topic that Hucard and CD are not the same platform and it went on for 8 or 9 pages and not end well. It's like they can't comprehend the fact that some gamers out there can only collect Hucards due to the scarcity of working Duos or CD units.

I should probably shut up and just start lurking again lest they ban me too. I only got Atlantean (and some earlybird preorders on repro hucards before they released in shop) by doing deals with members there. Getting kicked off would suck though because you can't even lurk without a userid, and I wouldn't learn about new developments.

  • I had to stop looking through this thread because it's making me want Turbo stuff....

DQ... that set-up and rest of the pictures in the first post are nothing short of greatness. Well done.

I remember going over to my friends place when I was young and he had this strange black system. We played Bonk's Adventure and I thought it was radical. I knew at the time it was amazing, but I didn't realize how cool it was.

Agreed. My meager collection has nothing on you guys...

Didn't mean to gloss over yours, haha... I really did stop looking at the thread and post a message. That's an impressive list, my goodness.

I was a little confused a while back. I almost said "I think there's already someone named 'Stardust' " and nosticed the somewhat simlar avatar? ... haha... Ummm. Yes and no. I get it now.

Note: Fantazy Zone is one of my favourites on NES. Having on Turbo would be pretty awesome.

I changed my username on AtariAge and NintendoAge to Kosmic Stardust. It is still stardust4ever everywhere else. I put my old username in my sig so my posts show up on Google. Turbografx lives up to the hype and is rediculously addicting once you get into it. I have already spent way too much money on this stuff.

    Cool cool.

Yeah... addictive. That's why I'm staying away. I figure NES and SNES will keep be busy.

Welcome! Sick artwork on the TGFX boxes and the cards are neat. The kid on the box for the console is so stoked, too, haha.

Like I said... It's one system I knew about as a kid but only played a few times. It was like a white Unicorn. So awesome when you finally get to see one.

I'm still hoping to find one in the wild, but I've decided not to actively seek it because I don't want to get too hooked into it, haha.
  • Yeah, I thought getting a Turbografx plus Everdrive was going to be enough to satisfy me. Nope. Something deeply more satisfying about playing physical copies, and it's still expensive with the import adapter. PC Engine games were on par with Super Famicom when I got into TG-16 in 2014. Not anymore. Now I've got this attitude where if I don't buy them now, I'll never get it due to inflation. I let Neutopia slip away and now I'm stuck with a repro. Others I picked up last year like Air Zonk and Parasol Stars are going for over $100 now. It's nuts especially that all the games are going up, not just the hidden gems and uncommons like with NES/SNES/N64.

And I haven't even scratched the Super CD bug yet, and I got one game so far, Star Parodier, because it was so great and whimsical on Wii-Virtual Console. I may rip the ISO and stick it on my Porta Pi MAME Arcade.
  • I'm actually on my last.. 9 games to find (that I personally want I mean) out of about 105 TG-16/Super/Turbocd games, it's been one hell of an expensive ride. I too bought a magical chase Hucard repro and I love it, but the rest is legit

I don't blame you man. Magical Chase is crazy expensive, but it's such a good game! Ironically, the US version has much better graphics than the PCe version has!

Have you thought about getting a PC Henshin adapter for playing imports? There are a great many awesome games that are cheaper there or didn't make it over here.

Is it actually that good? I haven't played it. How does it compare to Keio Flying Squadron.
  • I dunno, but I played it and it was fun. You get a health meter and a large arsenal of powerups are available for purchase, so it's not a rough game. A bit easy yes, but thoroughly enjoyable. It's also got three difficulty settings so you can ramp up the pain if you want. Only the first three of the six stages are accessible on Easy though. I've made it as far as stage four on normal difficulty, before I got tired and turned it off. I still had continues left over but it was late and I needed to go to bed. Sometime I need to play it again and see if I can make it through the rest of the game.
  • It's definitely a fun game, i'd not say it's in the upper tier of shooters but it's a very strong one still. Though i'd never consider it worth the price it commands, but that's a personal thing.
  • Yeah, i wouldn't ever pay what people are asking and im a big shooter fan. I may try and snag a repro at some point. Probably just get an everdrive first.

  • Done collecting for this thing now, everything else I want is too cheap or too expensive for me to be high priority.
  • I FINALLY found a TG-16 locally last night after trying to track one down for years. I got it for $100 with all of the cables, the back case piece, a controller, and a CIB copy of Keith Courage.

The problem now is, of course, how expensive the games are lol. I'm probably going to go the Everdrive route so I can at least use the system without breaking the bank.

Or get it region modded and get pce games, usually way cheaper.

Everdrive is a great option though.

Yeah an everdrive is essential for the turbo that way you can try out the games and buy the ones you really want.  I love my turbo but the most annoying thing is you never find games for it unless you shop online.  Even at conventions you don't see too many games.

Would that be a card adapter for PCE games or is it an actual hardware mod?

You can do either or there is a device called a PC Henshin but I'm not even sure if it's for sale anymore.  I personally have both my turbografx and PC Engine Duo region modded internally.

Awesome, thanks! I'll have to look into it some more. I'd prefer to keep my systems unmodded but if it isn't too intrusive and reversible I might just go ahead and do it. The benefits certainly seem worth it.
  • I forgot about this thread, including forgetting that I posted in it a while back, ha.

Like many people in here, I'd never even heard of the Turbo/PCE until I got seriously into collecting a couple of years ago. By a kind of fluke, without really aiming to get one, I ended up getting a recapped PC Engine Duo in a trade with another member a few months ago. It ended up sitting in a box for a bit, since I recently moved, but I'm planning to bust it out and purchase an Everdrive asap. In between jobs right now, so when I'm not working on applications, I've been reading up about games on the system. Super excited to start playing soon. I'm particularly stoked to try out the Neutopia games, since the original LoZ is one of my favorite games, and these seem to really fall in line with that gameplay/style.

I just looked through thread and didn't see much about burning discs. Anything I ought to know? I'm thinking of starting off with that, since a stack of nice CD-Rs won't cost as much as the Everdrive itself (again, rationing myself till I snag a steady income).
