Quick question about black light's effects on fading items

So I found this amazing video of this persons game room: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq-ZHm6Jnvk&feature=youtu.be

And I believe he uses black lights in there (how else is that carpet glowing!?)...so what effect if any does black light have on fading video game boxes or discoloring carts/consoles? Or is it better then normal lights as in causing no fading or discolorization?

  • My understanding is just that UV rays does it. If the black light puts out similar UV's as normal lights then theoretically the items should still fade.
  • Technically UV is not the only ink fading wavelength. Though every marketing campaign claims UV is the only one (not true) All visible light fades ink, fabric etc.

The only thing that will stop fading is a dark room.   Thats why most museums are dim and do not allow flash photography.

Though UV light is not good and is strongest with Fluorescent and Black-lights.
  • Game room? That's an entire gaming aircraft hanger.

Yeah I guess game room doesn't really cut it haha...now calling it a museum might work...

  • LED based black lights are of a higher spectrum than sunlight so it's not really the same. In theory blacklights can fade plastic but I don't think anyone has really proven it in practice with good lighting.
