That rats annoying as shit, no doubt about that, 25% of the time he hits me as I'm trying to hit him, got through the mines and now I know what the snake pit is you guys are talking about, got to the fourth part and got my game over, might try again later haha
I always love grinding in an RPG, the anticipation of exploring the next area as a reward.
Decided to play through that fucking battletoads game after reading all of your great progression, I can get to the giant rat on level five before my game over so with any luck I'll know what you're all talking about in a few hours/days.
We got another one guys! Good luck out there it gets pretty fucky after that!
Welcome to club 'Toads!
Rat isn't too difficult, though I admit if I don't catch him soon enough with the pipe, he will kick my ass every time. If you can't hit him when he appears, wait for him to stop moving then jump in and smack him. Trap him on either side of the screen, and keep smacking him until he's done.
I might give Volkmire's Inferno another go later today.

Lucky! Did you pay a lot for those two?
Would have been about 30USD, the guy really knows his shit and his prices canno't be beat, I have been going there since I was 6-7 years old with my grandma buying games from him (When he use to just have them all priced at $2 a piece hahahaha) If I pick out stuff that is like $1-3 he will usually just give it to me for free if I am purchasing a more expensive item to.
I remember we found a boxed Earthbound with everything but the box insert for like $10 back in the day.
So I just made it to the Marsh Cave in FF after an hour or so of grinding, and decided to take a break. On a whim I threw in Battletoads, and I made it all the way to Volkmire's in about 15 minutes.
The highlight of the night, however, is the fact that I managed to do a no-death run of Snake Pit, first try. I don't even care that I'm still stuck on Volkmire's; that's a hell of an accomplishment for me, lol.

I feel the same way man, I have done a few no death streaks before and I was just amazed how you get your ass beat so bad and then are able to do it professionally.
Usually you notice your progression but with this game you really notice your improvement which is why I think it is such a well known game it is addicting in that sense.

Exactly. The progress is the most notable of any game I've ever played, lol.
I'm officially playing through FF, but bouncing back to Battletoads for a run here and there. So far it's a working strategy!
Hit him repeatedly against the screen, I'll try that next time thank you.
Yeah Booty's second video shows that trick, you can basically 'juggle' him to death.
When facing him normally, I turtle him out by playing keepaway and turning around to just land one hit when he shows an opening. He gets way too many counterattacks otherwise.
Holy shit finally an update.... just passed Volkmire's!.....I drew a map at work and studied it a bit it honestly really helps, will post a proof picture as soon as NA will let me.
Holy flying fuck, I can almost beat level seven now, made it past the missiles and shit, same continue over half a million points and I'm about to shit myself, this last section is fucking terrifying, and I fear a game over will happen soon lol, I want to see level eight so bad haha
I haven't played it since I passed that level....... with Mega Man Legacy collection out I will be playing that quite a bit plus Kid Icarus is just damn good.

I have a strong feeling that Battletoads is going to be a game I continually come back and chip away at. I'm playing Final Fantasy as of now, but I keep dipping back to Battletoads and giving it a run. I must say, I can make it to said level rather quickly and effortlessly, so my playing has improved immensely.
That's more than enough reward for now as I continue to crawl through

I got a boxed copy last year some time, I have put some decent amount of time to it but I always get sidetracked.
I believe I made it to the third level fairly easily but that is where it gets kinda screwy....... If you have watched the AVGN video on it you "really, really" do "NOT" want to pick up that fire shit man it just ruins your run.

I've not played much Ghosts 'n Goblins, but in Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, the torch is borderline broken. It can multi-hit enemies and bosses like you wouldn't believe.

This is true.... I like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts much much better than the NES abomination...it is much more fluid and not so utterly ridiculous.
I was watching that Retro CX Japanese gamer show and there was an episode with Iwata and he talks about programming back in the 80s.... he said the reason why the games were so hard was because the programmers had to stay up all night countless nights testing the levels and making sure stuff worked that they would eventually became masters at it.........It makes sense to me.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my jam on the SNES; I can blaze through that one. The Genesis version is harder IMHO, but nothing trumps the NES version.
So after a two day break, I managed to do a no-death run all the way to Volkmire's! I'm still stuck on the last section, but I felt that was an accomplishment worthy of noting.
This game is one hell of a quest. I can't believe I've made it as far as I did in such little time. 10 year old me never dreamed of seeing level five
Comments
That rats annoying as shit, no doubt about that, 25% of the time he hits me as I'm trying to hit him
Big Blag is not too bad if you just beat him with a pipe against the edge of the screen and don't give him a break.

I might give Volkmire's Inferno another go later today.

Edit - seems to work on mobile way better
Also, I can't wait for Bootsy Beats Part 3; where the hell is it?
I just noticed that the Dark Queen totally ripped off Jessica Rabbit
I like Dark Queen better to be honest, not crazy on redheads.

Has anyone in here beaten this game?
I don't know who's actually beaten this with no warps...?

STILL stuck on the last section of Volkmire's.
