Moving Help

My company merged with one of our biggest competators last year.  As a result, they are merging corperate offices.  They are relocating the Houston office first, then the people from the Dallas office will join them in Houston.  I live in Dallas and will be relocating to Houston in the next few months.  Only problem is that they exiled me into the "field" last April and I haven't been home since.  The ball-n-chain has been talking to the realtor and trying to set up the sale of our house.  My company is going to pay for moving expenses.

My quesiton is, what is the best way to move a collection?  Is it best to just pack it in boxes and hope for the best, or would it be better to get some plastic tubs and move the fragile stuff myself in a seperate u-haul or something?  Has anyone ever done this before?  If so, what are some suggestions you have from the experience?

Thanks!

  • Haha, I am about to do this myself, i'll be moving into a new apartment next month probably. My loose carts are just going to be packed up in big cardboard boxes. My systems are in plastic bins, and I haven't decided how i'm going to pack my boxes yet, probably just in big cardboard boxes, and carry them myself so they don't get damaged.
  • I would pack you most prized games separately and move them yourself to were they wont get damaged.
  • dain had to pack up his stuff and put it in storage for a while, so im sure he knows how to protect all of the stuff when packing it all up and moving it... shoot him a PM and talk to him about it! good luck!
  • OT, are you an oil man by any chance? I can't think of what other "field" work goes on in Texas.
  • Aww you're leaving Dallas? Now I'll be the only collector here. image

I have moved 3 times in the last 3 years where I had to relocate my collection. I did exactly what you were thinking of. I bought a couple hundred dollars worth (i have a lot of games) of plastic storage boxes (sturdy ones) and packed everything up in those and put the big stuff in sturdy cardboard boxes. I moved my collection seperate from eveything else along with my computers in my Sister In-laws Honda Mini van.

I found it worked REALLY well and efficiently. Especially because I did it myself. That way you dont have to get mad at friends or family for treating your collection like used stuff at a garage sale.

    Good Luck!

I am a resident Project Engineer for the biggest oil and gas pipeline contractor in the world.  I think that we were 2 and 3 before we merged, but now we are #1!

Edit:  ^^ Yea, I hear plastic cases in plastic tubs are the way to go.  Thanks for the help.

  • Cool. That's a good industry to be in, for at least the next 20 years, I would think.

Do they offer preferred stock, or anything like that to employees?
  • ^^That is the plan as we get all merged and become one company. The owners plan to take us public and offer some good stock options for their employees. That will be a couple years down the road. Now, they just pay well and offer a pretty fine profit sharing and pension plan.
  • Keep me informed before your IPO. I wouldn't mind getting in at employee prices (through you) and re-appropriating the shares at a later date by converting the stock after any company imposed limitations.
  • I would be moving all my games myself. Someone on another site had the movers steal his gaming stuff.
