Circuit City to Liquidate

Just saw this on Yahoo news:

Not much info, but I hope there's at least a chance of getting some cheap games if they have a going out of business sale.  Seems like this has been coming for a long time.

  • Yeah, when they declared bankruptcy a few months back everyone knew that was the final nail in the coffin.
  • the circuit city in my city already closed down. It was a very slow liquidation, and by the time it was worth it there was nothing left.
  • I went to one of their "closing sales" to buy some cd's. It was mostly crap, but there were some classics thrown in there. I went to two different stores, and both had the same crappy CDs. I later read an article about how instead of liquidating their actual stock, they have these professional liquidator companies do it for them, and the companies draw from their stockpile of crap. This is why both stores had the same crappy Cds. The good ones probably got sold off to like Best Buy or something. So I really wouldn't count of getting anything too good.
  • Unfortunately, all of the good stuff will go for more money than you might expect.

The same thing happened when CompUSA liquidated a year, or so, ago.

They start at 10% off and keep marking it down each week until it's all gone.

Some dumbass will come in and buy the nice items like flat panels and laptops at a dinky 15-20% discount, rather than hold out for the deeper discounts that are certain to follow.
  • Our Circuit City is still there (for now), but the odd thing is that it's in a shopping center with what used to be CompUSA and Linens n Things. It's like the closings are just going building to building.
  • My local Circuit City has been selling everything off for about two months now. Once they get down to the last bit of stock, they really do cut the prices quite a bit. The last time I checked in locally, they had all of their movies and videogames marked 70% off.
  • nice we just bought a tv at circut city in december are they all closing or just some
  • I think they are all closing in the USA. I like how they try to blame it on the recession. They have been going down for years. Two years ago they laid off like 4000 employees. I was a subcontractor. They even let go of all of the subs too, except one company for each district. Luckily my company had the highest marks and I kept my job. Their business was doing so poor though, that in the 5 months after Christmas (2 years ago), I started getting like 10 jobs a month. This was spread out over a 4 hour driving area, on my own gas money. I had to quit and get a job making 10k a year.

you have to watch what they do though

when the compusa here closed they kept slashing the percentage off and raising the prices on the items everytime until the last day.

anyone not paying attention wouldn't ever notice this,  unfortunately for them, we were there just about every day

  • We are in the market for a new big screen TV, but I am weary of buying something like that when they won't be able to honor a warranty if an issue arises.
  • I went to a Circuit City liquidation sale today. Not too many good deals as of yet, but I assume it'll get better in a couple of days. I was looking for demo units too (DS, PS3, whatever) and was told there'd be a liquidation specialist figuring out what to do with all the store fixtures in a couple of days.
  • all the good ipods were gone from the Maryville Circuit City today. Must go hit the West Town one tomorrow.

well, according to their website, if you have a warranty with them, it will still be honored, they have been working with a 3rd party to cover their warranties.

Now you know how I feel.  I have never made over $12,000 in a single year.  How can you afford a nice $300,000 house let alone video games at that much a year?  And whats worse, on your taxes you have to mark the section that says you make less than 24,000 a year and that spot is on the bottom of the feeding chain er money chain.
  • I haven't been in Circuit City in probably 10 years, so forgive me for not knowing the answwer to this question.   What are their games displayed in?  DO they have cases like Walmart, or are they just generic racks like Best Buy?  And do they have demo units?  It'd be nice to get a Nintendo display case, if they even have em.

they have some locked cases for the newer games, but the rest are in plain racks like at best buy

Neither have I. I guess that is why they are going out of business

I went to mine yesterday to check it out to see TV prices and what random stuff they had. They had a PS3 demo (which I could care less about), but the racks were just generic. I was also hoping to score a Nintendo case as well. It wasn't even much of a discount and the placed was swarmed. I pretty much wasted my time unless I wanted used copies of TMNT for GBA at $14.99.

  • i was there today. there was a line out front before the store opened but when we go in nothing was on sale...
  • I think we'll be seeing fewer and fewer brick-and-mortar electronics stores in the coming years. Why pay $1,800 for a TV you can get online for $1,000, no tax and free shipping?
  • I would go so far as to bet that within 20 years, most retail stores will simply be pick up centers for online sales. Circuit City had ample opportunity to correct this, they let their ego get in the way. Reminds me of the once mighty DiscountGames.

I went to my local Circuit City today.  They had some pretty sweet PS3 display cases and a bunch of Kiosk units.  I told a manager that i'd be interested in these and he told me that they would be the last to go and to come back in about 4 weeks!
