GBC game giving me fits.

So I have this Road Rash GameBoy Color cart that I've come into possession and it really doesn't work (Laugh here).

While it's a cheap game, it hasn't worked in a GBA or a GBC and nothing looks wrong with the board (everything's correct and nothing looks apparently messed up). Has anyone else had issues with GBC games going kaput? Any solutions to fix or attempt to see what's wrong?

Again, I know it's more effort than most would put into a cheap game, but I care to understand issues (common and non) with the consoles and their games.

Thanks for any help!

  • I'm actually interested in this as well. I have two Gameboy games fairly close to me, mostly because they're the two games I've had for as long as I can remember. One of those games is Zelda: Link's Awakening and the other is Bomberman GB.

Though these two games have had drastically different lives within the time they have been a part of my collection. The Zelda game has gone through the wash at least four times because my parents would go into my room and throw my clothes into the washer without checking my pockets. So four times it has gone through the wash and dryer cycle; has been chewed on by a crazy ass fucking pug; dropped more times than I can count.

It still saves, it still turns on with zero struggle and never bricks up or glitches.

Bomberman GB? Well, that bastard has been in a plastic case its entire life when it wasn't in my Gameboy, has never seen the washer and dryer, and was fortunate enough to not be attacked by a crazy ass pug. Some times I can get it to start up if the planets are aligned, some times I can get the game to start after sacrificing two elder gods, but I can never get beyond the first portion of the second stage. It bricks up in my Super Gameboy, it bricks up in my Gameboy and my Gameboy Pocket. Far as I can tell everything looks beautiful inside the cart. Sure it isn't an expensive game to replace, but this is my game and I want it to live.

SO IF ANYONE WHO IS A WIZARD WITH THE STUFF CAN CHIME IN, WE WOULD BOTH BE APPRECIATIVE!
  • Could be a number of issues. Could be a solder joint broke off, bad trace that decided to call it a day or maybe one of the chips decided to stop working
  • try reflowing it if there are no bad traces
  • Adding this info about the cartridge. I'll work on pictures, but I'm afraid the chip may have given up the ghost.

    On a GBA:

    * I can get past the legal & company splash screens.

    * I can get to the menus, options section melts the game down hardcore.

    * Enter the race and this is where the game will hard lock. Sprites on the screen and the level partially loaded.

    * Additional start ups are hit or miss to get that far. Sometimes rarely a white screen.

    On a GBC (designated console):

    * I'm lucky to get it past the legal/company splashes.
  • bit rot? Shouldn't even be an issue with mask ROMs...
  • Mask ROMs can develop bad bits too. That's probably what's happened.

That's actually a huge fear I have. The only other game I have that mimics my Bomberman GB is my BlazEon for my SNES. The BlazEon feels like I need to give it six hours of foreplay to get it up and running; however once it's running it won't quit out on me. It does take a whole lot of random events for it to function, however. Yeah, I've cleaned that baby with an erase and tell her she's pretty every night before she goes off to her plastic sleave.
