Chrono trigger! I found it at a thrift store for a dollar not knowing what the game was. I brought it home and was blown away from it. It was a wonderful experience. The opening cutscene showing crono's peaceful hometown with the seagulls flying overhead left an impression on me. The music was incredible too. I had an amazing experience with it and quickly became my favorite game of all time.
I'm not sure if this counts, as I knew the name of the game and that it was a horror game. However i knew absolutely nothing else about it (what style of horror game, how it played or looked, and how well or poorly it was received). My answer is Illbleed for the Sega Dreamcast.
I picked it up knowing pretty much nothing about it outside of it being one of the few horror titles on the system. What i found was one of the most hillarious, unique, and amazing horror games I could have ever hoped for. Sure, this game isn't for everyone, but it was perfectly suited for me.
If you love schlocky horror, don't mind a learning curve in game controls (and are flexible enough to wrap your head around them), you've gotta play it.
EVO... Got it in a lot and had never known anything about it. After a little investigating and tips from the Internet, gave the game a really good play through. AWESOME GAME!!
I love the variety of "evolutions"/upgrades you can make to your character. Pretty sweet to test out all the different combinations.
I don't know why but there's something really interesting and cool about playing through all those different time periods with different body types. Great stuff!
I picked it up maybe six months ago, knowing nothing about it. I played it for about an hour and was really impressed. I put it on the shelve because I was (and still am) trying to beat Ghosts n goblins. It's this weeks game for the competition and I have to say it's a very good game.
Friday the 13th, all the way in 1998 when I saw the cart on the shelf on Funcoland. I never knew there was an F13 game (no internet, but I was a massive fan of the movies), an all the employees/older brothers in the neighborhood assured me the game was really hard/sucked.
It's one of my favorite titles on the NES, and I've loved it since day one, lol.
Bought it solely because it had cool box art, had no idea what it was.
Was really impressed by the music, the action, the rpg elements, the items, the companions and the weapons! Pick it up if ya see it. One of the best NES games in the 8-10 dollar range.

Adventures of lolo on the NES was an incredibly welcome surprise, also jackal and gyruss, gyruss on the NES arcade stick is fucking great.
I will agree with you about gyruss. I was looking for some cheap schmups for the NES and SNES, when I came across this game about a year ago. Though it was tough, I found it to be a unique gaming experience that was very enjoyable.
Exactly, I went into a game store and bought every nes game under ten bucks to fill out my collection a bit, so many fucking awesome games I never heard much about.
Mine was Pirates: The Legend of Black Cat for PS2 got it for Christmas one year after Pirates of the Caribbean had come out and Pirates were all the rage. I actually thought it was a game based on the movie when I first looked at the cover. Its not but it is awesome like Zelda with a Pirate theme. It also has a sweet multiplayer where you duel with pirate ships.
Tomba for PlayStation. Bought it for a buck at a yard sale in 2008, and was very pleasantly surprised at the excellent platformer it turned out to be. I had no idea it was rare, or that 2.5D platformers of its quality were relatively few and far between.
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind for the PC. I picked up the game at a local EB based on the box art/description alone. It was really difficult to get into, but once I did I had a great time. One of my favorite RPGs.
Tron Bonne, I purchased it back when I was in middle school because I recognised the character from My Favorite Megaman game (Legends) Loved the Multiple game types and of course it included the Legends 2 DEMO. but Was surprized by how enjoyable the game was.... Unfortunately It was stolen from me off of my school bus ( I had a Battery on my PSONE / SCREEN) so it was portable, and one day I had left my Game Case on the Bus and all of my PS1 games were Stolen. Still trying to recover the rest of them...
so, if anyone has The Misadventures of Tron Bonne up for Trade, PM Me!
It's been a long time since I've bought a game I didn't know about. I'd say Ys Book 1 & 2 would be it, I knew about the game, but not too much about it. I got it before super metroid was released on snes, and while I knew they could have some neat graphical effects, I honestly wasn't expecting the damned thing to talk.
Rise of the Dragon... one of the great Dynamix adventure games (along with Willy Beamish) I am pretty sure I got it as a gift though... not sure if that fits with this thread
When I bought Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth on WiiWare a few years ago I really had no idea what to expect. I just knew it was a Castlevania game and figured it was sort of a remake or something. Never played Castlevania The Adventure on GameBoy unless late last year. Blown away. Easily one of my favorite Castlevanias. I love the classic gameplay formula along with the amazing soundtrack. I really *really* wish they would rerelease this on Wii U or 3DS.

Great game. If you can track down Klonoa for the PS1, that's another really good 2.5D platformer.
Street Fighter 2010. It's one of the best 2d platformers on the NES in my opinion, and criminally underrated. It even features Ken from Capcom's Street Fighter franchise way, way before those games got huge. I bought it back in the day simply because it was marked down cheap, and was pleasantly surprised.
Parasite Eve for PS1. Found it at an EB Games in 2003. I was well into PS2 at that point, but looking into PS1 games as well because I was too focused on N64 during the PS1 heyday. That was back when the square label automatically meant you were getting a quality product. So I took it home and played almost nonstop for weeks until I beat it. It was such a great time and it's still one of my favorite games on the console.
Oddly enough got my copy of Chrono Trigger from a friend way back before the information age.... was blown away to say the least. Revisiting it again now on the DS.

That one's been on my radar for a bit, yeah. I have an empty case for it, but no disc or manual.

One of the few times I've bought a game I've never heard of

I also never liked video game music till I got the duo. Still don't.
