The Flamingo is pretty cheap.. Thats where we stayed a couple summers ago. You might wanna check that place out. Its kinda old school Vegas though.. and the drink chicks are like 35-40 yrs old.
Check United Airlines website. You would have to look at the travel packages. They had the lowest rates that we last saw out of anybody. I am going out in March myself.
The flamingo is in an EXCELLENT location, right in the middle of the best part of the strip. I highly recommend it. It's probably going to be demolished as soon as they're done making their money back on Planet Hollywood. Now that the Aladdin has been razed, it's Westgate's cheapest and oldest property in LV, so you can imagine it won't last long. There's also a nice resort off-strip that's associated with the Flamingo, that's where my wife and I will be staying this coming summer. The only way to stay there cheaper is to book downtown and take the transit up when you want some real action.
^ Just remember, all you need to say is no, and continue to tell them that you have no money to "invest" in future vacations. Don't feel bad, and they'll try to "drop down" a few times, each time making it seem like you're getting the better deal at their expense. The one time when we got a free trip to Williamsburg he even pulled out all the stops and talked about how much they spent to bring us here for the weekend They offered! Don't feel guilty!
Oh, it's nothing to feel guilty about at all. But they rely on the fact that a certain group of people will always allow themselves to be whittled down.
Bottom line, if you've ever paid too much for a car, or believed a salesman...never go to a timeshare presentation.
I have heard that a great way to get a nice hotel room is to slip a folded $20 in between your drivers license and your credit card when you check in. There are a bunch of success stories that seem more than worth this "tip."
If you want an upgrade, you're much better off going with the sure thing of a rewards credit card that is affiliated with your preferred chain. Many of those cards have sign-up bonuses that equate to full airfare or hotel upgrades, and they're a sure thing.

The Flamingo courtyard smells SOOOO bad... sooo much bird crap everywhere!
If you are going to visit all the casinos/hotels on the strip, you should try and stay somewhere in the center to make things easier (You can view one end of the strip at a time). The strip is a lot bigger than some people realize, and you dont want to be walking all the way from one end to the other every day.
Also, make sure to get up to the old Vegas Strip to see the Golden Nugget, and the light show on the 3 block long over head screen.
Make sure you hit up the ticket stands for some good deals on the shows at night. They have lots of comedians, Broadway shows, Circ de Soliel shows, etc. I saw Mystere (Circ de Soliel show) and highly recommend it, but there are were 5 different shows playing that you could choose from.
There are also some free outdoor shows that you can see, though they get really crowded. Head down to Treasure Island, and you can see the Pirate show. I think it plays like 4 or 5 times a night. Pretty cool too.
I stayed at Treasure Island when I was down there. It was pretty decent. Try and pick a cheaper hotel, because you won't be spending much time in your room.
You can also take a trip to the Grand Canyon if you can spare a day. It's a pretty big hole in the ground, that's for sure! You'll pass over the Hoover Dam along the way.
Oh, and you can get a call girl to your room in less than 30 minutes! (Faster than most Pizza places!)
Speaking of food, theres lots of Buffet style dinners to be had! There's also a lot of high end food places... I'd stay away unless you want to spend $75 on a steak!
There's a couple of arcades on the strip too. I think the one I went to was down around the MGM Grand or New York New York...
There's lots of things to do down there. Just do your research first and set a budget! And save any gambling for your last day!

I stayed here before too, not a bad place by any means. It's very much right in the middle of things while not being super low end (Circus Circus) or very high end (The Luxor). Vegas is a great time, good luck finding a place to stay at!
I usually go at least once a year, actually went 2 weekends in a row one year. Stayed at several places. Excalibur had pretty cheap rooms, relatively clean, and a good poker room, kids run rampant here though. Tropicana wasn't to bad either. Definitely stay away from hotels in old downtown, they are scary and smelly. I stayed at Binion's one night, checked out the next day and went to the Tropicana. I would stay away from Stratosphere, Riviera, and Circus Circus. Treasure Island was pretty nice, but a little pricier, and as has been said, little time is usually spent in the room. Have fun on your trip.
I have been there several times for conferences and such. I would second Excalibur. It is a decent place in a great location that has rooms for about as low as you can get. Also, they just updated the pools about a year ago so those are in good shape as well if you care for a swim.

What is the catch?
You have to spend a few hours being tortured by timeshare salesmen.
