How old do you want to live to be?

After going to a funeral in north-central Mississippi, I decided to post this topic, since I got to thinking about death.

Personally, I only want to live up until I'm 70. Anything beyond that is too old for me, and it would be very saddening for me not to be able to do the things I once was able to. Thus, I'd rather die sooner than later.

I know this could potentially be seen as selfish and cruel, since I'd be leaving behind family, but I can't help it. Old age really frightens me.

How about you guys? How long do you want to live?

  • I don't want to ever be a burden on my family, friends, or anyone else. I don't want to have to die sick and alone. If I could live to be 100 and still be self sufficent, than great. If I have trouble even walking, shoot me now.
  • Among elderly people polled, the majority ranked each decade of their lives starting with their 20's progressively better than the last, right up until oldest age.

At this stage, to those of us in ours 20s and 30s, old age represents the unknown, and we fear the unknown. But once there, you realize that you have grandchildren to enjoy, close friends whom you've known for decades, and an easy, relaxing lifestyle.

Poor health can happen to anyone, at any age, and tragic old-age-related syndromes such as alzheimers should not define old age in general. We should not be defined by how we die, rather how we've lived - and old age is still life nonetheless.

    Bring it on.
  • anytime is good
  • I don't have a specific age in mind. Really as long as I'm not functioning in a diminished capacity then age is irrelevant.

If you don't live well into old age then retirement funding does get much cheaper, though.
  • I'd say 80-85....as long as I'm in decent health and have my mind.
  • Well myself I plan on being raptured out of here really soon. Which the way things look wont be long
  • well, i will eventually have to get a kidney transplant (i figure in 25 years or so), sooooo, i will be on a ton of pills after that. i dont want to live much longer than 65. with that said, want to be retired at 40 from the business world and then teach business strategy, auditing, finance, and other related courses at a local college after i "retire." but i have always said the same thing... i know where i want to be at 65, and it is 6 feet under ground!

    Care to elaborate? I'm curious.
  • I believe he's referring to the worldwide downward spiral that is currently going on, and the potential for some sort of apocalypse.

It can certainly feel like the end of the world if you don't put everything in perspective.

Doug - Christ will come like a thief in the night and NOBODY will expect it. The fact that you (and many others) do right now, probably means it's not going to happen yet.
  • Oh, THAT rapture. My bad. =P
  • Not to turn this thread into a religious one (use my old topic about religion for that, or just make a new one), but arch is right wrld -- if Christ is going to return as the Bible claims he is, he'll do it when we least expect it. If everybody was expecting it, he wouldn't be much of a thief, would he?
  • As for how long I plan to live, I'm in the same camp as wrldstrman about waiting for the Rapture. However, if Christ doesn't make His return in my lifetime, I'd be satisfied just knowing my life or something I did was useful to someone. Even if I died at 35, if I wrote something, say, I finished my NES guide...I'd be happy just knowing someone put it to good use image . By no means am I stating that's as long as I want to live...if God gives me 35 years, I'll be thankful, or if God gives me 110 years (which has happened in my family history at least once), I'll be thankful.

Now, a somewhat more scientific approach to this might be involving heredity. My mother's side tends to live significantly longer than my father's side (average 80-85 years on my mother's side vs. roughly 60-65 years on my father's side). That said, assuming death of natural causes exclusive of diseases, cancers, etc., I should rightly live to see around 70 or so. However, one cannot rule out the possibility that I may only live to see 31 (my uncle (my father's youngest brother), 1954-1985), or that I live to see 110 (I believe it was my maternal great-great-grandfather, 1865-1975).

I completely agree. The Bible says he will come when we least expect it.

I don't know how long I want to live.  I've never been one to think about that kind of thing.  That being said, God will decide when it is my time.  I do however look at the "thief in the night" concept a little differently.  I think that to believe that Christ is coming soon is very reasonable.  No one will know the exact day or time, and he will be gone before you notice he was here.  That is more along the lines of how I would interpret that line.

  • Don't get me wrong, Ross. We should live like he's coming TODAY...every day.

But it's misguided to make plans for the future as if you, or your children, won't be around to see old age.

Christians 1700 years ago felt like it was the end of the world, too.

Heck, the Jews were waiting 4,000 years before Christ arrived in the first place.

No matter how bad things look now...empires have fallen without it truly being the end of the world.

We could be in for a much longer wait than anyone anticipates. (Though I would very happy if I was wrong)
  • I'm going to pass on the religious aspect of this discussion, but I'd like to live at least as long as my spouse, and long enough to watch my children grow up and graduate college. Considering I'm not married yet and do not have any kids, that should be a long, long time away...
  • I think Arch hit it right on. We should be living like Christ could be coming any minute, but still have a focused life and doing His will while we are here. Even in Acts and in the many letters, the apostles are all prepared for his return and waiting patiently for him, but living their lives and doing what they can while they are here. That was almost 2,000 years ago. I have no reason to believe that it should happen now as opposed to then, but still have to live my life and live according to His will as they did back then. Just cause we don't know when He will return, doesn't mean we can't prepare for it.
  • As long I'm at good health I'll live forever...

Being old isn't the same as life stops, my 93-year old neighbour* is at better health than me (and I'm 35).

*Who btw is the grandfather of the famous norwegian alpinist Aksel Lund Svindal.
  • i would say about 75 +
  • didnt expect to make it this long. Every day is a bonus for me.

true no one knows the day or the hour but Jesus himself said you will know when its right at the door step. Israel is the key only until they became a nation could the countdown begin. Those that study the bible know that right before the 7 year peace treaty is signed Jesus yanks us out of here.

The fuse already has been lit in the middle east , either there will be a all out war very very soon or a peace treaty.

  • Doug, the current fighting has gone on in the middle east since the 60's. There is no reason to think it can't go on for another 50 years without a substantive shift in either direction. But I do agree that the nation of Israel existing again is important.
  • At least as long as my fiance. It'll be some trick, I've got a few years on her.
  • Hopefully long enough to meet 'jonebone' in person.. He's my hero...
  • I wanna be a cranky old man someday... image
  • Old enough I'm ready to die.
  • I am also going to stay out of the relgion area of this thread.

I want to be the oldest SOB around like I mean 120 although only if I still have my mind if I get something that robs me of my mind then its time to go for a walk to the woods.

I did some research on my fathers side of the family back a couple of months ago with ancestry.com anyways the odds of me living that long are eaither really good or really bad my great great great grandfather lived to be 91-92 and died of "sinility" although he was a baker for over 60 years my great great grandfather lived to be 40-41 and died of "a perforation of the left side of heart" (heart attack) my great grandfather took a toaster to the bath with him at like late 70's after his wife died , grandfather lived to be I think early 80's and died of a massive heart attack and stroke in his house, father is still kicking and turned 62 on the 10t he's also had a minor heart attack 2 or 3 years ago, I guess its a good thing I don't get angry easy.
  • I want to live to the age of 123, dying exactly on my birthday: May 27th, 2100 !!!
