Who's Playing Mario Maker?

  • Ugh. Got home all stoked to play my game. Went to the mail box.. not there. Checked the front step.. not there. I go into my account on Amazon and realize I preordered it before I moved to my new house. So I never updated the address for it to be delivered to and it's sitting 40 miles away at the house I sold a few weeks back. No idea how I'm going to get it.

I ended up running down to Game Stop just now to pick up a copy. They gave me this really cool "Mario 30th Anniversary" banner to go with it. I'll be playing this thing all weekend.

They found some levels online that are "Do not push any button" types where you literally get pushed through the entire stage. Some of them are pretty ingenious.

I found those pretty awesome to, I coined them "rollercoaster" levels. Very impressive.

  • Fun game, too many of the "do nothing" levels though. I usually pick through the ones with the 5% completion rate and try to beat those. I had the most fun so far I think with "The great escape", there's another one called something like "Don't lose Yoshi", I decided to go without him, and uhh....I should have listened to the title.
  • Amazing game! We have all waited for something like this for years.
  • Just picked it up this morning. Should be on later to see what it's all about.
  • I even bought a WiiU for it

  • I got the download code yesterday. I started playing, but level design is quite unimaginative and horrendous. It's weird, too. I always thought I would design some great courses. Ah well, so it goes.
  • I finally got to try it out. I enjoy the 10 mario challenge but I have not gotten into creating levels yet. All in good time I suppose.

Walmart has an exclusive bundle to get the game with it.

Tried the "Don't lose Yoshi" too, made the same mistake. I can't manage to keep him though...

  • I'm playing the OG Mario Maker -----> Lode Runner
  • Most of the levels inline are just really dank. I was kind of hoping for a little more structure for the online experience but w.e Nintendo. I'm enjoying making my own Mario game tho, so they achieved what they set out to do. Still, I'm looking forward to more people developing Mario quality levels to play.

all the attention whores....I mean youtube people....... are occupying all those spots with the starred heavy levels. Most of them dont deserve stars. Theyve had the game for weeks. All they had to do was remake their level on the new server. Even though you didnt do anything, the mario kart level was pretty cool actually. If they didnt link all their levels on their youtube channels, then we might see better stuff at the top.

I actually think the preloaded levels are better than most of the random online uploads so far. Hopefully people get better. My levels arent perfect, but I try pretty hard to put something people will actually enjoy(if they are actually good at mario of course )

I got to the very end and realized I needed him to make the last jump and literally burst out laughing, it was pretty funny. The level is pretty easy if you stay along the top.
  • Just picked mine up a few hours ago!  It's my first big purchase in a long time and I didn't have a Wii U... and I really wanted to play this

The book is weird, but has some cool art.

The game itself is great.  The controls on the classic games are a tad different, but still good.  I could do without some of the weird new sound effects though.

  • Right now I'm playing it and I"m having a blast just toying around in the maker.
  • I love it, it's sooooo fun, I got all the unlockable stuff, I've uploaded a few levels so far, really only doing structured levels so far, not fond of the auto ones. Ones called Marshmallow Hills, the other is cookie cavern. You'll have to try a couple times to beat them I think tho. Some trail and error spots in my levels which ppl may get annoyed with and every level has multiple ways to beat it and secrets.
  • We picked up a copy today. Initial reaction is that this is going to be a fun game. I just have to get into it more.

Right now the wife took it over and making a little progress through the standard game play.

I am sure I am going to have fun once I figure out how to upload and play through some other games.
  • This is one of the things that makes me actually want a Wii U. Then I remember the majority of the gaming I do these days is when I'm not home.
  • so has anyone played the 10 live challenge to completeion? If there is a completion? Or do they just add levels forever online. Also anyone unlock super Mario 3 or super Mario world yet? I still only have new Mario u and the original

They just keep adding levels, I've beat it a few times.

Yes I have unlocked everything in the game, I had to do the date change on the wii u to get everything though, it only took about 30-40 minutes to do. I believe they have patched this and if you just keep placing blocks you will get the new stuff.

+1 I've been trying to make Mario-quality stuff and I've got a few stars but nothing too impressive vs the number of people who played. I don't think it's particularly fun when you enter a level, get a star or a bunch of Lakitus and you basically float above an impossible level or just go through the enemies while you're invicible and get 200 1ups.
  • Anyone else noticing Mario Maker kills the Wii U Gamepad's battery life? Building a level using the touchpad and stylus drains out the battery in about 2 hours for me.
  • Yes, and since it's not charing through USB I had to unplug my cradle to plug it while I'm playing.

which isnt that big of a deal to me. Im sitting where the cradle is anyway. And when Im done I just unplug it and plug it right back in the cradle. I set up the gamepad where I play the games. It makes way more sense that way so I never have to have a cord between me and the tv.
  • My wife and I absolutely love Mario Maker, and we also purchased the Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Amiibo to go with it.I have already beaten the 10 Mario Challenge, and unlocked the 4 Nintendo World Championships 2015 courses .
  • The Giant Bomb level, what a nightmare. Feels good beating a course with a 1% clear rate.
  • I have really hammered Super Mario Maker over the last week. I initially put it off because of the nine day unlocking thing, but a recent patch made me change my mind after learning I could unlock everything in a few hours of play time. I started off with basic levels just to unlock new items, but then started making serious levels once I had unlocked all of the elements. I have currently reached my quota for up loads, and can't unlock more slots until I gain enough Star medals, which is difficult if nobody bothers to Star your levels.

The game does exhibit several problems though, some of which will be addressed in a couple of days with another patch that will add Checkpoints - something I feel was obvious and should have been included from the start. The main issues I have with the game are that Nintendo hasn't really made it very easy to search for new courses in-game, unless you have picked up a specific 12-digit code from a forum or social network. I feel that they could have made it easier to search for new courses via certain search terms, or be able to add tags your courses. I also feel that they should have given us options to categorise our courses based on the type of course it is - For example, puzzle, labyrinth, music, platforming, run & jump etc.

Something else I feel needs improving is the fact that there are limited options available to browse courses on offer, with the top 100 rated courses available which only get more popular as they are the only ones being promoted by the game. Unless Nintendo or a popular YouTube blogger are specifically promoting courses via their social networks, you don't stand a hope in hell of getting your course into the top 100 list! Your only hope is that your level randomly generates during a 100 Mario Challenge, but I have found that if you make it too hard people will just skip it and not even bother to leave you a Star ranking.

The one thing I do find really frustrating is that courses can be downloaded AND EDITED, thus giving players a back-door option to dissect your level and effectively cheat the system by learning where all the hidden items are. To me this is wrong, and Nintendo would do well to remove this feature ASAP as it undermines the whole nature of the game! I'm unsure whether users can re-upload these courses as their own or whether they are DRM protected, but it's still not cool that Nintendo would give people the option to cheat the game!
