Scariest game you have played?

I know this thread has had to have existed previously but I am starting a new one, wondering what the scariest game(s) are in your “personal” experience.

Over the last couple days I have been playing "Snatcher" for the first time on the Sega-CD and goddamn the atmosphere in that game is heart pounding....within the first 10-15 minutes I knew this was going to one of my favourites of all time.

Some may not find the game scary but man playing it in the dark with the volume cranked definitely puts you on the edge of your seat!

It can't obviously rely on jump scares but the shock value is massive.

  • Silent Hill 2 hands down (shocker). Other SH titles and Fatal Frame (series) get a nod.

Other games with great atmosphere/tension - Siren, REmake, Rule of Rose, Echo Night Beyond, Dead Space

    * a solid sound system REALLY adds to the experience (or headphones)
  • My three favorite series are Clock Tower, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame. All truly suspenseful, heart thumpingly tense experiences.
  • I'm not easily scared but playing P.T (Silent Hills) for the first time genuinely made me terrified.

I'm extremely upset that I did not have a PS4 at the time (still don't have one, still upset)
  • Hm, I think The Grudge for Wii was pretty scary. The original Clock Tower was suspenseful.

The PC version of Maniac Mansion creeped me out as a kid. You have to remember the PC version has minimal music. When you enter the mansion, all you hear is a ticking clock and otherwise deadening silence. Pretty creepy to a kid. Also for some reason Wizards & Warriors' tower stage and Wizards & Warriors: Fortress of Fear stage 2 creeped me the hell out.

I know they were popular, but I didn't find any of the Resident Evil games scary at all, or the Silent Hill games.

I haven't played a lot of horror games though really. I never got very far in any RE or Silent Hill game. I've heard good things about 'Pyramid Head'. I've heard great things about all the Fatal Frame games, and Sweet Home.

It's interesting when a game unexpectedly scares you, like the Anti-Piracy screen in Sonic CD, or the creepy endings in Streets of Rage 3.
  • Silent Hill 2, no question. Got it on launch date, played it alone in my basement, crapped my pants. It's a beautiful game; the graphics, the pacing, and especially the sound engineering. And it's not just a series of jump scares (yeah I'm talking about you, every Resident Evil ever). Silent Hill 2 has a genuinely creepy set up that slowly builds the tension until you end up scaring yourself with general anxiety. Good stuff.

I've heard that too. I really want to try that one out.
  • In a couple levels of Donkey Kong 64 there is a kremlin that says "get out" if you don't solve a puzzle quick enough and as a kid it scared the hell out of me the first time. Looking back it's rather silly lol
  • I'd say Dead Space 1 and 2, though I don't play scary games much. I liked Silent Hill 2 because it's disturbing and has a fantastic atmosphere, didn't find it scary at all since the enemies aren't terribly threatening.
  • Silent Hill when I was a youngin. First mature game I had ever played as well.
  • I was very young and playing Soldier of Fortune on the PC and remember getting scared shitless by limbs flying off on killed enemies. There was a hostage or whatever and i blasted his leg off, at wich point he started jumping towards me on one leg and beating me with his hands. His head was right at my aim and when i shot it exploded like a fucking watermelon. I asked the computer operator to start up another game for me haha.

Objectively it would probably be Manhunt but by that time i wasn't scared of videogames anymore.

I have been interested in Clock Tower in some time and plan on getting a cart sooner or later...

Oddly enough I have not played "any" of the Fatal Frame games yet but I will be getting the new one on Wii U for sure!

I used to play SoF as much as some people played CS... that was my go-to online shooter.  Defiantly intense with the limb-removal... defiantly scared me a bit when I was young playing it.

  • Kuon for PS2
  • One more vote for Silent Hill 2, it truly stands out among the other SH games and even among the survival horror genere.
  • Dead Space

    Silent Hill 1 & 2

    Resident Evil

    Bioshock

Current Playing Dying Light and its pretty freaky at night when you get spotted and have to haul ass to a safe zone.

Dying Light certainly has some tense moments especially that first night you have to surive, probably one of my favourite newer games.

  • I see that 99% of the games people mention are 3-D games.................what about some older games?
  • All Fatal Frames, P.T., Dying Light at night time and when you're surrounded, also Haunting Ground.
  • When I was a kid Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill definitely gave me tons of scares. The most recent game that really gave me some scares was Outlast. Can't say that I've ever played a 2d game that made me jump.
  • Silent Hill. It was the combo of not being able to see and creepy sounds (and of course I only played at night after I was supposed to go to bed and the house was very quiet). I can still clearly remember the static from that radio. Can't think of any others.
  • Back in the day, the Resident Evil remake on GameCube and Silent Hill 2 were unquestionably the creepiest and scariest games I played. They don't scare me anymore and I haven't really come across any games that do scare me in a very long time. But I recently played Silent Hill:Shattered Memories for Wii, great game, and found it kinda creepy, so I'd say that's up there too.
  • I think the only "scary" game I ever played was Resident Evil 4, so my barometer for what is scary is pretty weak. Liked the atmosphere (and staring at the wolves from a distance through the sniper scope gave me a chill).
  • Uninvited is up there, as far as older games.
  • I'm not big on scary games, but the scariest one I played has not been mentioned... Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

That damn Nemesis shows up everywhere and can chase you from screen to screen. Whenever it appeared I was always low on ammo (he's basically invincible anyway) and my heart would race as I tried to escape. He's not the typical slow zombie from the RE series either, he sprints like an NFL linebacker.
  • My vote also goes to Silent Hill 2. I hold the unfortunate honor of witnessing the majority of the game. Mind you that was with a group of friends and I just watched. It's still extremely scary even if you're not actually playing.

Heck, I can sum up why it's the scariest with just this phrase: Nightmare Hospital. You guys know the one, yeah... Puts a whole new spin on abandoned hospitals, which are already kinda spooky when they're not abandoned. Team Silent had some serious genius going on there.

I also nominate Clock Tower for Super Famicom. Great game, fantastic visuals, really terrifying setting and villain. I find the 2D visuals work really well at conveying that lingering dread effect. The only thing worse might be playing the game in black and white.

As for a completely out of left field vote, I nominate SOS (aka Septentrion). I know it's not supposed to be scary, but this was also made by Human Entertainment (the Clock Tower guys) and the whole idea of a sinking ship is really terrifying when portrayed in the manner SOS pulls off. Imagine taking every single frightening instance of watery death on a time limit (Sonic etc) and magnifying it several times over.
  • For me, back in the day, I remember Doom being the first game that scared me. I had just got it for the Sega 32X Christmas one year and I was home alone playing in the dark. Shit would pop up behind me and when you turn around and hear that scream/yell it would freak me the hell out!

YES! I watched some gameplay of this a few months back, and even by today's standards it's fantastically creepy. I'm glad I didn't have this as a kid or I'd have pissed my pants over it.

Shadowgate was pretty creepy too, but Uninvited takes the cake.
