Opinions on the PSP?

I always envied the PSP, as it was in many ways literally a portable PS2, but I ignored it for the DS. Now I finally aquired the Blue PSP 2000, so I'm wondering what the PSP scene is currently like. Game-wise and collecting-wise. I've heard horror stories about the games breaking/following apart and it's hardly been 10 years. So far I have...

  • I'm not a huge fan of the psp's design. Maybe if I get a newer, slimmer model I would like it better.

Now the Vita is something I love. Super comfortable to play and many great games to choose from. It's too bad Sony doesn't care about it.
  • My opinion is dive into the great catalogue of games without the hassle of actually using it. There's this fantastic emulator called PPSSPP (literally the best emu for any console ever) makes not dealing with discs and rather uncomfortable hardware worth it for the awesome games. I have no qualms about playing games in 1080/60fps when my real PSP doesn't even turn on, charge, or run off the AC adapter.

Ys Seven and other action games are fantastic with a real controller. If you're into jrpgs, you're in luck as well!
  • I like mine. It's one of my most used consoles currently besides my DS since I don't have Vita or 3DS yet. Being able to run games off the memory stick once you've softmodded it is very nifty, loading is instant. The library is smaller than DS but still a quality-over-quantity offering. The worst PSP games are no where near as bad as even the worst DS games, so that's saying something.
  • PSP is fucking amazing, to me it ranks higher than Nes/snes if you include emulation running on it (IE, if I had to pick psp vs real Nes, I'd keep the psp). It's snes support is spotty though, but it's finally fantasy games make up for it. Beck just the sequal to FFIV is worth owning it
  • Opinions on PSP....

    1. Mod it

    2. Put NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators on memory stick

    3. Play your favorite retro games on the toilet

    4. .....?

    5. Profit!
  • The PSP is a nifty little machine. I have a 2000 model as well. I have a few actual games for it, mostly strategy games. Which is awesome, I'm not into handhelds too much but I really dig strategy and puzzle games on the go.

You can still get games for a song, even "L@@K sealed RARE", though I can't speak to the horror stories of UMDs falling apart, I haven't had that problem yet. I'd recommend Gungnir and the re-releases (with improved but still 2D graphics!) of Star Ocean 1 and 2 and Tactics Ogre LUCT. You don't even need CFW for most emulators anymore. The SNES emu I tried runs slower than I'd like, but the TG16, NES, GEN and GBA emus all run great.

Almost forgot, you can get an upscaler box for them and play full screen on your HDTV. It's pretty badass.
  • The psp is great! lots of good rpgs! Almost as many as DS lol, actually I'm not sure which one has more. Both have a ton! Personally I like the DS more but i've had 3 PSPs since launch and enjoyed the system very much!
  • I'll always prefer Nintendo consoles and handhelds over the competition, but the PSP is pretty decent for a non-Nintendo handheld. It absolutely blows the Vita away. I hate the disc based media though since it reminds me of disc-mans, one bump and the game skips or pauses or whatever. I also hate the fragility of it, as Nintendo's consoles and handhelds are always much sturdier. But in terms of games there is a good amount of quality stuff on it.

    Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles

    Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

    Dissidia Final Fantasy

    Dissidia Final Fantasy 012

    Extend Every Extra

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

God of War Chains of Olympus

God of War Ghost of Sparta

    LocoRoco

    Lumines 1 & 2

    Patapon

Just a small list, I know there are a lot more good titles out there.
  • Does the PSP offer MAME support?
  • I love my PSP, but I only use it for emulating purposes . I have a couple PSP games for it, but nothing that stands out.
  • I have really enjoyed my PSP, and there are a very large number of good RPGs and JRPGs on the console.
  • My opinion is that this system is like the second coming of the freaking TurboDuo. Excellent super-unique library full of games that upscale beautifully to fullscreen. Stuff like Dracula X Chronicles!!! I freaking want that! It's like our second chance to get Rondo of Blood, man! And Final Fantasy IV Complete, which just might be the best FF game ever pressed.

And it's cheap like the XBox library right now, only with craploads more RPGs. More hidden gems than you can shake a stick at. Three Shining games, three Persona games, three Ys games, FOUR Legend of Heroes games, the freaking SEQUEL to Valkyria Chronicles, and ZHP Unlosing Ranger. It even has a Harvey Birdman game. How cool is that?

I guess you can hook PSP-2000+'s directly to your TV and treat it as a console. I really need to do that.

Everything offers mame support.  I bet when they added a vagoo to Jenner it was one of the options there even.   The problem is how good of mame support, and I've not seen anything too great for the psp, mamewise, but it could have just been a bad port I had.  Emulator quality varies a lot even by emulators with the same name.
  • Thanks for the reply. I am looking for a quality console/handheld arcade support option.
  • PSP is one of the (many) systems I collect. It is the best handheld system ever, graphic-wise, with the exception of its successor, the Vita. The PSP has an amazing library of 600+ titles, plus another 600+ UMD's, if you're into collecting those as well (I am).

I also have soft modded my PSP, so it has a NES, SNES, and Genesis emulator built-in. There's a handful of great, PSP-exclusive PSN games, such as the new Brandish (remember me from the SNES?) and a few other PSP Minis, not on PS3, PS4, or Vita.

The biggest draw is the sheer number of RPG's and Atlus games. If you lump together RPG's, action RPG's, strategy, and anything in between, there's gotta be 50+ of them on the system, maybe even closer to 100. There's a ton of exclusives that are some of my favorite games, such as Gurumin, Ys 7, Kenko Badass Rumble, and Patapon, to name but a few.

I have never experienced a disc break whatsoever, and I own over 1000 titles.

The PSP is also region-free, so enjoying Shmups from Japan and some of the PAL exclusives is good. The system has region control over UMD's, so stick to Region 1 or 0.

There's also some extremely rare and/or valuable titles on the system,. which always makes collecting for a system for exciting and challenging. One example: Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner. Good luck!

I can't get MAME to work on the Wii or PSP, the 2 systems I have soft-modded to emulate. I tried and tried but the control/load was all screwed up.

The PSP has a lot of arcade collections such as the Metal Slug Anthology and SNK Arcade collection as well as several King of Fighter and Street Fighter collections.
  • I think it's a good buy if it's cheap, and I'm sure there are quality games in the library but as much as I want to like it, I just don't care about it.
  • The PSP is probably the greatest Strategy RPG system ever imo.

If you're a fan of the genre, Jeanne D'Arc is absolutely amazing. My favorite SRPG of all-time.

    Also check out:

    Disgaea

    Disgaea 2

    Tactics Ogre

    FF Tactics :WotL

    Ragnarok Tactics

    Phantom Brave

    Valkyrie Chronicles 2

Don't forget Aerdis Eclipse! There are many others as well, but that's a good start.
  • I didn't see them mentioned yet, but there are also ports of Valkyrie Profile and Breath of Fire 3 for the PSP. I've never played the ports though, so don't ask me how they stand up to the originals.

I've heard Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is pretty much the exact PS1 game with a few added cutscenes. I haven't heard about if Breath of Fire III has any improvements. So I looked it up -- looks like it's also pretty much the same except you can unlock gallery art and there's an online item trading feature or something.

I just looked up some of those new cutscenes for Lenneth. I was more impressed by the new cutscenes they added for FF Tactics. Still cool though, and the PSP version is so much more affordable. Hook it up to the big screen. The PSP has a lot of bang for the buck with the re-released RPGs, more budget conscious gamers should jump on dat PSP quick.

Also Drac X Chronicles is worth a PSP all by itself because you can unlock the original version of Rondo as well as SOTN. I didn't bother with the Rondo remake (the main game) once I unlocked both. Jump on it, cirellio, it's badass.

I will man, next copy I come across, I'm gettin' it. Good point about Valkyrie Profile being cheaper too. There's not much reason to own both VP and VP:Lenneth and it saves some bucks.

  • If you're a Ds guy, your probably wont like it because the PSP is way better.

There's 4 Ys games on PSP
I think you're probably forgetting Ark of napishtim. My humble little Ys collection:
    image
But I agree with you! love the system and have most of those games u named!
  • Forgot about Ark! Nice set man.
  • Thanks! can't wait to pick up the originals for Turbo!
  • Sick little portable. Don't let the haters tell you otherwise, totally underrated machine. Stacks of great console quality rpgs from Square and Atlus, cool retro throwback titles, tons of hidden gems, all for cheap.

Also it is a beast for emulation. For anyone having trouble with SNES emulation you need to have a slim 2000 model or later and make sure to overclock your settings(336 I think.) That will enable you run just about everything short of the crazy fx and special chip games. I played Super Mario RPG at full speed with the only slowdown being a few of the spell effects.

Mame is hit or miss, some games are fine, others just go right to green screen and crash, might be my bios though. If you do want arcade emulation it does fantastic with CPS1, CPS2, and Neo Geo though. Nothing quite beats ripping thru some Alien vs Predator.
  • It has some great RPGs, like Tactics Ogre, FF Tactics, Disgaea, Jeanne D'Arc, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3, Persona, and so on. Those were my favorite games for it. The God of War games are solid entries. I also liked Crisis Core. There's also the Ys series, I haven't played it, but it's highly regarded and my husband loves it.

I'm not a fan of the system itself. The battery life sucks and I don't like holding it. I have most of my PSP games on my Vita now and that's where I prefer to play them.
  • loco roco 1+2 and Patapon series are some of my favorite games of all time on any system. I also discovered katamari through the psp. I think games are just as easy to find, not a hugely collected system yet. With the 2000 and 3000 you can get the cable to hook it to your TV!
