Should I trade my Xbox 360 for a Dreamcast?

I have the 250GB Xbox 360 that I rarely use, and my local shop has a boxed Dreamcast for $80 and they said that I can easily goet $100 store credit for my 360 if I trade it in. Should I go for it? Is this a good deal? The Dreamcast comes with one controller and all the connectors, and it's in good condition. They also got a mint copy of SKies of Arcadia (complete and resealed and better than what ebay offers) for $60 which I head it's an awesome game.

  • I would! I love the dreamcast! Not a big Xbox fan.
  • Yeah man, get that Dreamcast.

Skies of Arcadia is pretty epic, if you like RPGs you should grab Grandia 2 as well.

Personally, that's an overpriced Dreamcast. They tend to go for a lot cheaper on forums, as little as $30, just without the box. If I were you, I'd sell the 360 on here and buy a Dreamcast on here, you'd be money ahead.

As far as whether "downgrading" is good, I believe it is. Dreamcast has a far stronger library of classics than the 360.
  • They do have a non box model, but it's so used up and dirty and the controllers looks terrible. Yeah, I think I should just sell my 360 here and get a nicer dreamcast. I'll probably trade some games over there for that nice copy of Akies of Arcadia. This store that just opened has some other awesome stuff though.
  • Yeah 80 is steep even for ebay.

Im surprised they are giving you a 100 for your xbox. Thats a solid trade in.
  • As far as gaming goes, I've personally gotten more enjoyment out of the 360 than the Dreamcast. But I imagine the 360 will be much cheaper in the future, so selling it now is not a bad idea. $100 is not too bad, but store credit is, and $80 for a dreamcast is overpriced. See what they offer for it in cash, or sell it on here or on eBay, then buy a Dreamcast online. I'm sure someone here can hook you up.
  • My answer is no, but for reasons you don't probably want to hear
  • Get a Dreamcast for $40, not $80. Definitely overpriced. It's an amazing system though. An excellent assortment of Shmups and Fighting games. Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia are must owns as well.
  • Yeah, I'm not a proponent of the idea, but I've never seen much of anything that made me want a DC (shock, awe!). The 360 library is very deep, and it has utility as a multimedia tool. Plus, as others have said, you can find really cheap DCs if you look around for a while. But I'll admit my ignorance re: the boxed price, so if that's a fair bit higher (doesn't sound like it is from what others have said) and you're really into boxed consoles, then maybe it's a good move.
  • The 360 library is full of what I consider to be the downfall of gaming, so Dreamcast wins there.
  • I would say no. Most local game collector shops drive up prices because they see it more convenient for you to purchase it from them while you can hold it in your hands, see it, taste it, etc.. They also know that by putting it up for auction on eBay or on local/digital classifieds, buyers will want it for way cheaper than what they paid for it. I would urge you to keep looking and find one in good condition, possibly with box, for cheaper. Check your local and nearby Craigslists, flea markets, etc. You'll save yourself some dough.
  • Definitely worth it.

I would say the same is true of 360, as well. Especially when you include US playable imports like Eschatos or Mushihime-sama Futari. As far as fighting games go, 360 has VF2, VF5, some Capcom fighters, some Arc Systems fighters, and Skullgirls. I definitely agree DC has some nice stuff, though, like 360, some of its best shmups are imports.

While I do recommend getting a DC, I don't recommend trading a 360 for it. There is far more to 360 than mainstream games like Call of Duty.
  • $30 console for $100 console? No way. I mean, I'll trade you my spare dreamcast for your 360 if you want

Plus there's a lot of good RPG's on it. Not as many as the PS3, but still a fair amount.

  • I deff got my dreamcast here for $30 trade in and find one, they are absolutely around. use the extra to fill out some games!
  • A good rule of thumb... anytime the question starts off with "Should I trade in my..." the answer is NO!

You are obviously not going to get anywhere near what your item is worth when you trade it in to someone or some business that is motivated solely by profit. Not to mention probably not even getting a good deal on what your purchasing. Just sell your stuff personally and then find the best deal you can for what you want. Always worth it in the long run.
  • I would keep the 360, just because games for it are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day, and it does have good titles. Having said that get a dreamcast, if your looking to play it you really don't need a box. Dreamcast is awesome and there are still games being released for it.(side note does anyone know if there is an english translation of segagaga anywhere) If you have to play skies today you can spend 20 on a GC copy, and I am not sure about shenmue pricing but it is available on xbox and is backwards compatible I believe with the 360 if I remember correctly. At the end of the day however its your console so do what feels right to you, but for me personally I am at the point where I won't trade anything that I dont have a double for, Im still mad at myself for getting rid of my first xbox to buy phantasy star universe. I still mourn my long lost Phantasy star online characters.
  • Honestly, picking up a console you've never had, and a few good games for it is totally worth it. These are all collectors talking, and the Dreamcast is a fun console to play. I bought mine and never cared for it until I got Soul Caliber and Sonic Adventure in a lot a week later. Now I boot it up all the time to play Soul Caliber. The arcade games for it arevery arcade-y. Sounds stupid , but if you get it you'll know what I mean. It has the box too, which is a nice addition to your collection. Go for it! Expand your gaming threshold. The 360 is dying and losing value, and the Dreamcast is going up. Good Luck!
  • I decided to keep the 360 and I decided to buy the Dreamcast piece by piece so I won't have to spend a lot of money at once. First I'll buy Brand New controllers, then VMUs, an S-Video cable, and finally the system itself which needs to be in top shape.
  • $80 on a boxed Dreamcast? That's madness. But after owning both systems I would have to say I prefer the DC over the 360. A bevy of solid titles and it's not heavily sought after like anything cartridge based so chances are the seller will go dirt cheap on them.
  • You should trade your 360 for anything
  • I'm not even going to read the other posts in this thread: trade it for the Dreamcast and don't look back.
  • Keep the 360, buy a Dreamcast. Enjoy both for what they have to offer
  • I just wanted to say the only thing I ever liked about the dream cast was that you can hide your play in madden football.

Trade the 360 in for NES games.

Lol this made me laugh real good.

I was trying to convey how little I appreciate the dreamcast. There were better games than madden for the dreamcast..... Right?

There are much better games for the DC of course, but I was pointing out that Madden was never on the Dreamcast. They had the vastly superior NFL2K series.

  • Don't pay that much for a Dreamcast?

    Well I'll be... Lol

Touché but it was still the coolest thing to me. That the plays could be picked from that memory card screen.
