Puzzle and Dragons: Who is a fan?

So I guess it's kind of weeaboo to say, but I wanted to know what all the hoopla was about when I gave this game a shot. Since it's enormously popular in Japan. Well, despite the cookie cutter monster designs, it's actually got a very addictive formula. I have a cheap Zeki brand tablet that is fickle but plays this OK, and just yesterday pre-ordered the new Amazon $50 fire tablet to play it with better performance.

I don't see myself paying for in-app purchases by any means but by itself it's fun, and is the game that got me to reconsider the merits of tablet/mobile gaming. Looking to try Monster Strike as well. I imagine the 3DS one to be competant enough for beginners and with all the in-game content they'll need right from the get go. Anyone else a fan?

  • I played Puzzle and Dragons for a few months and did enjoy it, but it started to become a pain in the arse having to get so many different materials to upgrade stuff. Plus, there was no PvP element to it, which was baffling. I ditched it once I was introduced to Dragon Poker (I play the Japanese version, but an English version was recently released under the name "Dragon Ace"). I never looked back -- been playing Dragon Poker every day for well over a year.
  • I started like 3 months back, it's fun, but I'm getting a lull and not playing it nearly as much now. I log in daily to refreash for my allies, and that's it. I'm rank 170, normally have an awoken basetet (Up to 4x damage based on combos, + 1.5x for green attack when turns are used) or phantom dragon Anima (3x atk for dragons, + HP raised), and in my first slot friends can see, I leave the bastet or restrained Liu Bei (3x ATK, 1.5 RCU for attackers, 1897 ATK, 3 TPAs)

To put it quite simply, mobile games suck even if they're Japanese. The fact that this makes so much annually is sickening. Good thing I knew better beforehand not to get too attached to this. There's no way I was going to pay for in-game content and the fact that the important data (including transactions) is all stored on the device and not the server is scary. The games themselves are fun, but the idea of pining for people's money for ephemeral goods is the major downside. Better off getting the 3DS versions of P&D and MS. Hopefully the 3DS port of Monster Strike will be localized. It was the spiritual sequel to Metal Walker on the GBC, which was created by the same guy.

You seem to have a misunderstanding here, the transactions are done through google play for the actual money, so they're not stored on the local device.

And you put too much on the pay-to-play, considering PAD is one of the simplest ones to play without paying a dime.  Each gem costs $1, last night, they gave me 10 gems for no reason.  You get one gem for each section of levels you beat, so there's over a hundred right there for clearing the main game, plus one gem for each group of levels beat using a team built by your friends leaders.  And just about every day they mail you one gem free.   PAD on the 3DS has 90% of it's fun removed, and it's not updated like the real game.  This seems to be more about pay to play in general and not aginst this actual game.

  • I never played the mobile version because I hate playing games on my phone. But I had the Puzzles & Dragons Mario Edition on 3DS for a few weeks, played the crap out of the Mario Bros Edition, then when I tried the regular Puzzles & Dragons version I just didn't get into it. I grew tired of the game so I sold it but I enjoyed the Mario portion when I had it.
