Thoughts on Remasters/Remakes?

So as I'm sure most of you are all aware, there have been a crapload of remakes/remasters of last gen games. The Uncharted collection is the next big one that's due to come out soon, so i just wanted to get your collective thoughts on whether or not you all think these are worth purchasing or even playing. Personnally, if it was a game or games that I thoroughly enjoyed or have never played, then i will probably pick it up at some point. Some might see it as a waste of money if you already own the games, but if they are entertaining enough then it's possibly worth picking up again.

  • As long as the Resident Evil remakes keep coming I'll be a happy man.
  • I don't mind them updating the graphics a bit, but sometimes they really mess up the game.
  • Proper remakes like resident evil on GameCube for example are fantastic. Bring an old game to a modern audience. Something like uncharted that just recently came out I don't like because you could buy the three on ps3 used for probably less than the remastered pack. That doesn't make me want a ps4 because I could play the same games on the console I already have. The problem is rebuilding a game from the ground up can cost as much as making a brand new game so is it really worth getting a proper remake of something vs a brand new experience?
  • BertBerryCrunch said it the best. My only contradictory experience was The Last of Us on PS3: I couldn't get into it, but after playing the remaster I felt like it was a masterpiece on PS4. It was the first 8th Gen game I had ever played(Sorry Wii U, I'm not counting you), but even though it's realy a 7th gen game it felt cutting edge and very next-gen. So yes they're OK if it benefits both the game and the consumer(free DLC), but they can be quick cash grabs too. I hope it doesn't get too bad though.
  • As an Uncharted fan I'm pretty appalled they have the nerve to ask $60 for 3 games that don't even include the multiplayer. I'll get it down the road because better graphics and framerate is worth replaying at some point.

Overall, I love remakes and like remasters, since most of the time they're better than or on par with the originals. They're also harmless, it's not like the originals are going anywhere and people who missed them the first time have another chance without digging up old hardware. This gen's remasters are getting over done, especially since the hardware wasn't a massive leap since last gen like we usually expect.
  • I don't get why recent games would be upgraded for graphics alone, since it doesn't seem to make that much difference from what I've seen from comparison footage of other games. It makes much more sense to remaster something from the PSX era at least. A lot of those games looked like sheeeet.

I really enjoyed Ducktales remastered. Had a great look, amazing rearrangements of the original music, and included some extra content. Very well done.
  • If it's something I missed out on and wanna play or something I really liked, then bring it on. If I don't want it, I don't buy it. Simple as that.

I'll be getting the Uncharted collection at some point. I love the series and it'd be nice to play improved versions.
  • love compilations
  • I think it's a bit ridiculous there's so many remakes of PS3/360 games coming out, graphics from those systems weren't that bad. That being said, if it's a really good game i'll play it. I never got to play the Uncharted games before, so the trilogy being remade is perfect for me.
  • I'm all for improved remakes like SMB 2 for GBA, just slight graphics improvements or compilation i'm on the fence about. It is nice having games on newer consoles but it should also be acknowledged that a HD-upgrade brings very little to the table and treated as a welcomed perk when getting it for a new console. Instead they tend to treat it like a proper release and expect too be paid a substantial amount for it.

It can give developers an incentive to earn money by slacking when they should be creating new and full-fledged experiences of their existing brands or inventing new ones.
  • I'm not much into remastering of modern games (since I have so much yet to play), though I can definitely understand the appeal. To each their own.

The remastering of classic games like DuckTales (and Strider, to an extent) look amazing. I'd love to see more games done this way.

However, I just recently found a video of Yoshi's New Island for the 3DS, and it really rubbed me the wrong way... though that was developed by Arzest, then published by Nintendo.
  • If they do it right, it's great. Some re-releases have me clueless though. DMC, Dishonored, Tomb Raider, The Last of Us? I don't see the point of re-releasing games that were already released towards the tail end of last gen.

Then there is Silent Hill HD... a total butchering of two classics.
  • I think remakes have their place but I just don't want any system being oversaturated with them (coughPS4cough). But when I think of great remakes I immediately think of Resident Evil (GCN) and Metroid Zero Mission (GBA). Two examples of how you improve on literally everything in the game while keeping the same layout of the original. Super Mario All-Stars is another great example of well done remakes/compilations, though they didn't change anything aside from graphics, it's still fantastic to have 4 great games on one cartridge.

I didn't bother with the others, but TLoU Remaster was amazing. The updated visuals and especially the jump to 60 FPS made it such a new game. I loved it even more the second go around.

It makes sense in a way, with some of these games. PS4 is selling better than PS3 ever did. There are a lot of people who never bought a PS3 before the PS4, so they missed out on key games, like Uncharted and TLoU. That's more sales for little effort.
  • Some of my favorites:

Pac-Man Arrangement (the first one that was on PS2/GCN/Xbox Namco Museum and Pac-Man Collection GBA)

Space Invaders Extreme 1 and 2 DS

    Donkey Kong GB

    Pac-Man Champion Edition

    Pac-Man Champion Edition DX

    Double Dragon Advance GBA

    Bionic Commando GB

    Lock 'n Chase GB

    Bionic Commando Rearmed

    Galaga '88

Game and Watch Gallery 1-4 modern versions

    Sega 3D Classics for 3DS
  • I think fifth console generation (PS1/N64 in particular) games are the ones most in need of remakes. Developers have really perfected 3-D graphics and controls, and a lot of otherwise good games from that era suffered due to the newness of the medium.

But I tend to be skeptical of remakes of games older than that. The Duck Tales remaster got big critical acclaim and a lot of people seemed to like it, but I hated how the action would stop every 10 seconds for characters to babble on and on about whatever. Yeah, it's cool that they got all the original voice actors to reprise their roles, but at that point they lost the appeal of the original for me. Current remakes are bound to have this type of thing.
  • I think in 99 out of 100 cases they are completely unnecessary. I literally cannot think of a single one I'm even remotely interested in other than maybe the FF7 remake.

Just because you are not interested in them it doesn't make them "completely unnecessary".

They are completely uneccessary to me, just like I said.  If you want to rebuy stuff you already own and have alreayd played be my guest.  That's what these companies are banking on, they don't need to do any innovating or real work and can just regurgitate their terrible games over and over again to the same people.

Considering most ports and remakes are done by third party companies, it's not really taking development away from new games from the original companies at all.
  • The PSP remakes of Mega Man 1 and Mega Man X are amazing! I'd even say the former outdoes its original in many ways. The latter is on the same level, though the source material is by no means flawed to the extent of MM1 on NES.
  • I'm sure there were tons of buyers for the WII U remake of Legend of Kay....right?
  • Pretty tired of this trend to be honest. Seems like a stall tactic since its taking so long to get new good games out. I've enjoyed a couple. Mostly games i hadnt played yet like the Metro games. Did get GTA V again & the Last of Us but i didnt really notice a huge difference in that one. I will probably pick up the Uncharted collection and God of War III remaster at some point just cause i really like those games but i'm not paying full price for the Uncharted collection at least. Its funny, i had just played back through all 3 of the uncharted games with my girlfriend and i said part way through, I bet you they're gonna release a remastered collection for PS4 and boom. Kind of wish i would of waited to play through them with her till the collection came out. Would of been a bigger incentive to pick it up. :/
  • Remasters don't take resources away from new games being developed, because it's usually separate studios doing them. They're a quick way to bring in more revenue at little cost, revenue that can be used for new games. I wouldn't complain about that or make those false assertions.

I dunno how you didn't notice much difference in TLoU. The frame rate jump alone was astounding. I didn't play the GTA remake on current consoles, but I did play it on PS3 at launch and PC and launch and the difference was pretty amazing.

It doesn't matter whos doing them, they are still taking resources away from doing something meaningful.  But I get why they do them, all the fanboys show up and buy the same crap over and over again just like the Star Wars fanboys buying those movies 20 different times.  People just want to play through shitty interactive movies with "AMAZING GRAPHICS" rather than games that require real skills and thats what the wasteland of modern gaming has become.

  • Some people seem really hostile over things other's enjoy that they don't happen to.

Someone also doesn't seem to understand that studios meant to work specifically on these types of games aren't taking away from new games being developed.

No multiplayer? That's the only reason I was considering it. I had Uncharted 3 on the ps3 and never started the single player campaign.

  • I suppose they should have included multiplayer, but as a huge Uncharted fan, I've yet to touch any MP in the series.
