I guess my most impressive NES game beaten would be Silver Surfer. I have even done it once no deaths. My next step is recording it and beating the world record.

Thanks but I would have to say Silver Surfer is more braggable than this title.  Well done.

Most people automatically assume the game is hard because of the AVGN video. It's really not. I consider Ghosts n Goblins to be a harder game to sit down and beat. Silver surfer has patterns you can memorize. You kind of need to get good with the controls but eventually you can surf (haha) right through it with little difficulty. The final stages are the hardest. Congrats again on this win dude! I will eventually try to beat this one.

Those are very good points.  My biggest problem is beating the game without a turbo controller not being an option anymore due to my old age.  I might try to tackle it with the turbo option one day.

haha I literally can't use a turbo for that game. I look like a maniac playing it. I count my shot button pressed so I know when an enemy dies. It's kind of hard to explain.

  • Some games become completely different games with turbo fire. Gunsmoke and Commando are twice as fun just because your ability to blast the crap out of everything has increased so much.

As for me, people say Journey to Silius and Blaster Master are hard games. I guess I never thought that way because I enjoyed playing them so much.

31:24 I noticed he got points for climbing a ladder.  Time and sprites didn't jump though

Isn't the whole point of a "longplay" to actually show everything you played?  Cutting all the deaths out to make the run look better than it was is kind of sketchy but at least he does acknowledge doing it in the video, so that one gets a pass.  I'm pretty sure this is done on an emulator as well, as real NES graphics do not look like that unless you've done some sort of RGB mod to the system (doubtful).

  • No death: ninja gaiden, tmnt 1, mega man 1, contra

Beaten without continues: darkwing duck, Bucky O'Hare

I guess those are the more challenging games I've beaten. I haven't beaten some of those heavy hitters (gng, Battletoads, and the like), but maybe one day

Man, you beat that game?  You deserve the spotlight in this thread.  Mutant Virus and Star Force... not sure which one I'll be able to beat first.

Yea as I stated in the commentary I edited out all my deaths for the viewing pleasure.  This game took me a little over an hour to beat but after editing the video is much shorter now.

  • Id have to say Castlevania 3 and Zelda 2.

This was all done on original hardware.  Good eye on the RGB which my NES is modded for.  I played this on a PVM monitor that outputted to a scaler for recording purposes.  To my understanding a longplay just shows the beginning till the end without cuts.  So I just cut out mistakes and kept all the good runs.  Unfortunately doing this makes it look hokey but this is more of an archive for myself than claiming 1cc or anything.  Plus I do not think as many people would watch if they saw me die over a dozen times on a part.

Yeah, I beat it for the 2014 "Beat Every NES Game" thread.  Probably would've tackled it again this year if I hadn't sworn off because of the conspicuous lack of unlicensed games this year.  First year I didn't participate actually.  Anyway, I left my system on for a week, playing a few hours a day for five days (day 4 and 6 were both spent not gaming while my thumbs healed a bit).  Unlimited continues definitely helps, but leaving the system on is what I think helped most...the first two days were spent just GETTING to the final level, so I wasn't really sure if I'd make it again in all honesty.  I do still like the game though, but I don't see myself playing to win any time soon.

Not bad for a guy who can't beat SMB eh
  • I'm not so good and I really don't have the time or patience anymore to grind through stuff but I would say the hardest game I've ever beaten was ninja gaiden 2. Even now I can just pick it up and casually play it and still get pretty damn far
  • Which is harder? The game that takes the most skill or the game that requires the most effort to solve?

For skill, my toughest win was beating Adventure Island with no continues (my WR run had deaths, but they were intentional for point maximization).

For solving, nothing beats the effort I went through to map out Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, particularly Wave 10.
  • Battle Kid 1 & 2 as well as most of the bonus stages.
  • Just going through this list making a note of games I should stay away from. I'm awful at NES.. I need that middle of the road difficulty for now.
  • Of the 100+ NES games I've beaten, the most difficult Id have to say is easily Solomon's Key, mainly due to the "continueless" grind in the last ten levels or so. The last couple levels required hitting blocks in random spots to trigger events, which breaches into the unfair. I did have to look up online where to collect all the stars though. Maybe I just needed the manual. Very intense puzzle game.
  • I've beaten castlevania, ninja gaiden, batman, battletoads, contra, super c, its all about getting a feel for the game and knowing when to do certain things to the point its simple, it helps when you've got unlimited continues, my first time playing bucky o hare I beat it no problem, never realized others thought it was difficult, the games incredibly fun and the controls are tight.
  • The original Megaman. Maybe I'm just good at games but I can beat it quite easily

Also, Hydlide. I don't want to beat it another time though
  • TMNT, I suppose. I see people often mention it's difficult, but I had no real issues with the coral.

Is there a trick to it?  That shit murdered most of my childhood.

I kind of learned the dynamics of floating/coasting after paddling. Once I mostly figured that out, it wasn't difficult. Going in with full health is certainly helpful, but getting the swimming aspect down was crucial.

I always switch turtles as my life goes down, and pray lol. I get through over half of the time.

I absolutely suck at that part, no matter how simple others claim it to be. Fuck the electric coral!
  • The trick is to stay in the middle as much as possible and just get through as quick as you can. Still, if you have to, you have four life bars...you should really only need two of them to get through the level once you have it down, and the first building on the third level is easy to power up again (a slice of pizza near the start and a full pizza up above), so don't worry about health too much, as long as you keep one turtle above half health you should be okay. Also, if you're low on health going into the water, you can use the pizza in the last screen of the dam repeatedly by going in and out of the door. I've never had to do that myself, but if you're not going in with near-full health on all your guys I can see you having some issues.
  • I would say Milion's Secret Castle if you're not using the cheat code for continues would be the hardest but i've never done it that way. I've been through battle toads, deadly towers and got too frustrated with G&G. Arguably, Dr Jekel and Mr Hyde - not because its hard, but because its so bad lol.
  • Adventures of Lolo 3 is slowing driving me to madness....

I don't know if it's the fact that the music is the exact same from level to level or the stupid Mobies but so help me god I will finish this!
  • Hardest one for me is the first Mega Man and the first Castlevania. I'm probably one of the worst gamers on this site but I beat those two!!!

If I can beat Zelda II it will be that one for sure.

Zelda II is in my sights, as well.
  • BUMP!

Now I'm rotating through Silver Surfer again Made it pretty damn far last night on my first run; memorization doesn't leave!

Well said! Silver Surfer is 100% memorization without a hint of RNG. Truly difficult games are stuff like Ghosts n Goblins (particularly the JP version's 2nd loop), and Holy Diver that have genuine randomness to fuck you up no matter how good you are.
