You should try to 1cc "Batman". I consider this one of the tougher games to beat without a game over because you _have_ to do it with three lives. No extra lives ever. And it's a tough game to begin with. I've only ever beaten it by abusing continues.

Well I was able to spend a little time with Batman this weekend. My last playthrough I was able to get to firebug only dying once. But I find those last two bosses are the hardest part of the game. I've fought the joker at least 30 times overall and have only beaten him twice... not the best record. For me to 1CC Batman I have to really practice on the last 2 bosses of the game. It will be tough but doable... hopefully I get some more time throughout the week to play again.

I'm having a similar issue with single credit clearing "Ninja Gaiden 3". I can make it to the final act with 9 lives and all my continues, but I have a lot of trouble with the second of the three final bosses. Part of the problem is that it is difficult to get there with enough health as there is no health refill during the entire section. You can barely make any mistakes. Even the first "Ninja Gaiden" refills your health the first time you face the final bosses as well as providing a health powerup on the screen before the bosses. NGIII is plain unforgiving.

BTW, I was watching the Game Grumps playthrough of "Batman" earlier today. They were doing pretty well before getting to the Joker and that's where they gave up. I know the feeling.

Well I wanted to give it another try this morning before I have to get to work. I was playing really well but got sloppy in the last level and was worried I couldn't do it. My first death was at the very end of the last level, I wanted to get some health recovery and got hit on my last bar of health from those bombs that drop. So I start the stage over with 2 lives. This time I get to the end quickly and with 2 or 3 damage taken. So I researched some strategies for beating firebug and found one that worked well. I was slightly off on my timing and he took me out. Down to one life. The second time I fought firebug I had the timing down and was only damaged 1 or 2 times. Now its for the joker. I kept jumping, punching and moving... I was all over him and I took him out. It feels pretty good to 1CC Batman on the NES... on my last guy with a couple bars of health... but I did it.

Now I am off to work but I'll be thinking about the next game I want to beat...
  • Congrats. "Batman" is definitely one of the hardest to 1cc on the NES because of the three life limit. Other games will give an extra life after so many points or there will be conveniently placed 1UPs to make things easier. With "Batman" it's three lives and that's it. "Don't screw up, boy."
  • Even after recently completing Zelda II, Dracula's Curse might be the most difficult game I can complete relative to the general consensus.

I own Batman, but I haven't played it for more than ten minutes. I guess I've got another one to put on the list
  • Joker is tough, but there is a way to beat him (actually, more than one, but I tend to stick to the one I know.) He's the one boss in the game that doesn't have a "safe zone" of sorts to dodge his attacks, so you have to get up close with him.

The beta version actually has a 1up in level 1-2, but yeah, the released game is brutal. Fortunately, there are places to refill the health (the drop traps, in particular) and there's sort of a pattern to the power up appearances so you can figure out when hearts appear.

When I first beat the game I beat it on one credit. I was hoping to no-death it my first time beating it, but it wasn't to be. I can still consistently no-death it up to the Joker, but he is still a tough nut to crack on one life.

My strategy mostly involves jumping over his gunshots, getting close to him and ducking and mashing buttons. It takes a bunch of tries and I have to get lucky.

Yeah, that's how I tend to do it. Punches do more damage than the other weapons. I also watch for his hand raise, which means the lightning comes down. If you back up a smidge, it'll miss you, and then you can unload on him again.

You actually don't have to duck. If you're close enough, like right up to the barrel, the gunshots actually go right past you. You just have to make sure to punch as he runs at you so you don't take a hit. If he's taking damage, he can't hurt you.

  • The way I just beat him was to get close and punch away. When lightning about to strike I would hop towards him and avoid damage. Worked pretty well. I watched a few speed runs to get some strategy ideas.
