It's over. I've decided. I'm beating Silver Surfer this weekend

Wish me luck yall.

Every now and then I just decide to sit down and beat one of these games. In the last year did Ghosts n Goblins, TMNT, Ninja Gaiden, and a few others, but this weekend I'm taking this sucker down. It's the toughest one I've tried thus far because of the limited continues, but I think I can do it as long as my forearm holds up from the constant mashing.

  • For real though, good luck man
  • lol Karl is my hero! thanks tho. I'm currently 2 levels down learning the patterns of the last 3. This game aint too tough as long as you can hang onto your powerups
  • Good luck with your mission, sir! I'm on the very last level myself, and I've been stuck there since about March or April. The game is definitely beatable; the trick is, like Bootsy says, is to get it in as few amounts of runs as possible - or it's going to wear you out and you'll get worse the longer you play (my main weakness, lol).
  • Dont lose your powerups. Memorize each stage. Good luck.
  • Has Bootsy beaten Silver Surfer?  It's one thing to beat Ghosts and Goblins because it's hard, but fun.  It's another to take on SS which is horribly hard and a whole lot of *meh* too
  • AVGN so over hyped the difficulty on this game.

Yes, he beat it live on a James & Mike Monday I believe. Either that, or it was a Silver Surfer revisted video. He beat it without a turbo controller, too. Bootsy rules!

And I also agree with the last poster who said AVGN over-hyped the difficulty of this game. It's all patterns. Nothing - I repeat nothing - comes close to Battletoads in terms of pattern memorization/timing IMHO. Silver Surfer is a cakewalk (up to the last level for me, anyway) compared to the later levels in Battletoads.
  • I still haven't found a damn copy of this game :/

Good luck, op. Enjoy the rockin soundtrack.
  • Totally throwing this game in when I get home later. I need a break from Battletoads (I'm on level 9 of 13!).
  • I remember renting this game and just giving up. Another one that was pretty tough was Wolverine.
  • Unfortunately couldn't get'r done over the weekend, so it's still a work in progress. I agree with a lot of you, the game really isn't too hard once you remember the patterns. I'd say the thing that mostly contributes to the difficulty is the so-so controls. They're not the worst ever or anything, but they sure as hell aren't smooth, so it makes it tough in sections where you're needing to squeak by something. The games actually quite easy as long as you can manage to hang onto full power-ups

This is really all there is to it. Also, having superhero stamina to press the fire button a gazillion times helps.
  • I fired up Silver Surfer last night, and made it back to where I was with minimal struggle. Only one more level until this one's in the bag

Hanging on to powerups is also key; the game can suffer a bit from "Gradius syndrome" once you really get it going. Sometimes the enemy patterns are very clustered, and hard to deal with without having crazy powerups.

Also, it sucks when you barely knick a wall or something when you've got a flow going. I yell "Damnit!" so many times during this one
  • My bicep is killing me from mashing all day. I keep getting reamed by this game once I get into the magik domain. I'm having one of those gaming days where your first run goes flawlessly, and then each subsequent run just gets worse and worse (probably because of the increased level of pissed off-edness), until now I'm just dying on the first screen of the game. Gonna have to come back to this thing tomorrow. Never thought I'd need to take my BCAA's because of video games haha
  • I legit almost beat Silver Surfer yesterday.

SO friggin' close! I even got my name tag out and taped to my TV and everything!
  • WOOOOO!!!!! LORD! HAVE! MERCY! lol. Just beat this thing now and had to put these up

Congrats ! I need to buy this game soon. I like challenges.
  • You still got fingers left? Congrats!
  • Haha, my bicep is killing me from messing with this game for 2 days. I still haven't brought myself to turn the console off lol. You guys ever do that after beating a game like this that takes so much work??
  • Would you say this was the hardest game you've beaten? Or if not, what was harder?
  • Ghosts n Goblins was definitely harder. I'd even put TMNT above SS in terms of difficulty. This game really isn't too tough once you learn the layouts, as long as you hang onto the powerups
  • Congrats on the achievement.

Congrats on your epic achievement, sir! I'm on the last section, myself Interesting how you rate TMNT as being more difficult!

GnG and Battletoads are like, Tier 1 games for me in terms of difficulty, lol. I'd put SS at Tier 2 for sure, though.

Holy crap - you still have a TV with the two knobs (VHF and UHF, I think). You must have your NES hooked up with an RF adapter.

AVGN is a pretty bad gamer, and while half of his complaints are legit, you're right - he over hyped the difficulty of a lot of games.

So, OP, how far did you make it? Did you beat it?

  • Nevermind, kept reading, congrats!

Really? That seems weird to me. TMNT can be tough(the last level, really) but I've never even put it close to SS in terms of overall difficulty.

    Congrats on your SS win!

The AVGN's review must be why Gamefaqs has "Back to the Future III"  ranked as the #2 hardest on the Genesis which is ridiculous. There are much harder Genesis games. It's a pretty sh!tty game, but I beat it in a few hours.

Thanks dude! I put TMNT ahead almost solely because I think it's just as hard BUT you have less continues. I did have to burn through 2 continues in the magik domain, but they were both because I died to far into a level, so I suicided to start from earlier where I could get my hands on those crucial powerups. This game is definitely one where those in-level checkpoints can do more harm thatn good sometimes.

    Now...on to Battletoads
