Favorite launch title?

Most systems came packed in with a solid game.  What was your favorite launch title for a console that was not included with it?  This one is mine hands down.

  • Panzer Dragoon on the saturn probably.
  • Mine would probably be Luigi's Mansion for the Gamecube. Still one of my favorite games overall, let alone the system.
  • NES - Kung Fu, Excitebike (I dunno if we can count Duck Hunt or SMB, as they were pack-ins in various configurations of the system.)

    SNES - F-Zero, Gradius III

    Sega CD - Sol-Feace

    Playstation - The Raiden Project
  • Balloon Fight, Luigi's Mansion and Mario 64 all fit this description for me.
  • Super Mario 64
  • How do we define "launch" games? Titles available only when the console was first available? Or some sort of "launch window", like 1 month after launch or if the console was released in Fall, the rest of the year?
  • Game Gear - Castle of Illusion

    Dreamcast - Tokyo Xtreme Racer
  • I didn't know Ghouls n Ghosts was a launch title. I'd say Excitebike, F-Zero, or Pilotwings (SNES).
  • The only launch title that comes to mind for me is wave race and I'm not even sure it was a launch title. Still one of my favorite n64 games
  • Mario 64 and Super Mario World
  • NES: Excitebike (Fun for a little while... but the other games are pretty meh)

    SNES: F-Zero (Fantastic game)

N64: Super Mario 64 (Truly amazing game)

GameCube: Luigi's Mansion (Not a huge fan, although the art style and comedy was cool)

Wii: Twilight Princess (Good game, although technically a GameCube title. It didn't have much competition of any significant quality amidst the launch)

Wii U: Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two (Because I'm insane)

Conclusion: Non pack-in launch games are generally not that great... except for SNES/N64.

Funny that you enjoy Epic Mickey 2. I played the first one and absolutely loved it. 2nd was definitely lacking

Same here man. I wanted that game to be as good, or even better than the first. But alas, it wasn't to be.

I was so excited to hear about a sequel and yeah it was quite the let down
  • Well considering SMW is my all time favourite game, gotta go with that.

I thought he asked for non pack-in launch games. Otherwise it would be pretty easy to choose for almost any system

I had to buy it seperately, but I guess technically it did come bundled at launch.

    SM64 then.

Titles available only when the console was first available is what I was going by.

  • Only systems I have had experience with around launch time:

    N64: SM64

    PS2: GTA III

    XBOX: Halo
  • Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt
  • Super Mario World.

GTA III was awesome and came out early in the life cycle, but still didn't come out until at least a year after the system did.

  • F-Zero was mind blowing when it came out. There had never been anything like it.
  • Following the wikipedia page for "what games launched with what consoles", F-Zero (SNES) and Rayman (PS1).
  • Soulcalibur for the Sega Dreamcast. Still my favorite entry in the series.
  • Gradius III easily.
  • Ghouls n' Ghosts is a good early Genesis title..

For NES I might pick Kung Fu.
  • Ridge Racer for PSP.

Still the best handheld racer ever imo.
