Running into rare stuff at the worst time

So I go to my local Pawn Shop that is the best place around here for games......

I am looking around the NES table that has games priced between $5-$15 and I run into my friend and he started talking about how overpaid for a Duck Tales 2 and that the one here was cheaper.....then he goes on to say he offered him Suprise at Dino Peak im like what the fuck are you talking about Dino Peak?

I go over to the glass tables where the more expensive stuff is and there you have it.. Duck Tales 2, Dino Peak, Godzilla 2, Gun Nac, CIB Deluxe Set, CIB ROB solo, CIB Stack-Up, CIB Gyromite, SEALED Miracle Piano (NES).

Apparently 2 collectors got out of it and sold all of their stuff.... Of course I am going to Toronto tomorrow and have to finance a new vehicle before Winter comes.

I picked up a pretty much brand new CIB Dragon Warrior IV for dirt cheap that was pretty much the cost of a cart because I had to get "something".

He told me to come back once I get home from Toronto because he had even MORE stuff in the back not even priced out yet.

Does this happen to anyone else? Do you run into expensive stuff in the wild when you have other financial obligations? I am thinking of just saying screw it and blowing the credit card and get this stuff for a god price while I can.

  • That is the way life goes. Can you perhaps come to terms with them on a payment plan if the price is worth it?

Fortunately, I recently picked up Mega Man 5 for $65 and it is in pretty decent shape when I was stretched thin on finances. I was very happy to walk away with it. MM5 is one of the rare good luck times though.

Oh I am sure I can make a deal with him.... He let me "take" TG16 games home before with no legal obligations.

I will have to go back Tuesday and see what I can do....He had MM1-6 there as well for good prices but I get the Famicom versions for MM... the art is way cooler!

  • When I first got into video games again (specifically older games) around the time I joined this site, there was a local, former collector who had a storage locker full of games he was selling for quite cheap. At the time I just didn't know much about what games to buy, was able to pick up Super Metroid for $10 and few other things. I remember he had a CIB Twilight Princess on GC for $10, but I looked at it and didn't think I'd get into zelda games lol. He gave me the OoT Master Quest CB for free though. He also had stacks of PS1, 2 games. I could've cleaned house knowing what I knew only a couple months later. So not like your situation, just didn't know what I was missing at the time
  • Yep...always seems that after a big purchase or a bunch of small ones that wipe out my budget, the perfect item (usually Exertainment related) pops up. That's how life goes I guess!

Stupid life and its stupid timing.....

  • Usually when you're broke you have more time on your hands, so you spend more time browsing and finding deals.
  • I would max my credit card. I RARELY find anything local and NEVER below eBay prices. You can buy it all, sell it to me and make a profit. Then use your profit money to pay for some of the stuff you want to keep. Where abouts in Canada, want to sell me your location. Seriously you are so lucky.
  • This happened to me once. A pawn shop I used to visit all the time got a few mint boxed Nes games, mostly commons like ice hockey and stuff but there was a punch out for 20 and ghosts and Goblins for 35. I didn't have the money and back then I collected cart only so I didn't get anything. I was stupid.
  • I came across DuckTales 2 a few years ago for $40. I only had $35 cash on me and the game shop told me the don't negotiate on prices. So I went back later that evening and it was gone. I ended up buying it off ebay for $60 a few months later which was the going rate at that time.

    Well that escalated quickly.

I am looking at about a 2 hour drive to even visit a store or pawn shop.

You're gonna hate me...the sealed one I opened years ago only cost me $50...and the game was considered such an everyday pick-up that I didn't even bother to film the opening of it!

Well it is somewhere I go pretty much every weekend regardless for this reason exactly, you just never know what he is going to get in.

  • If they have items as rare as this, I would be passing by daily!
  • I know exactly where youre coming from
  • Let me know what happens.
  • I can say this never happens. If there was stuff like that it would get payed with PayPal credit card and I'd worry about paying it off within the next 6 months. Free 6 month financing on any purchase over $100. Unfortunately I've never walked into any store that had anything like you described.
  • Get yourself a nice credit card for lots lite that. Just take the plunge and regret it later while those games are displayed in all of their greatness lol. Seriously though, I have been through that same scenario a million times. I would go to conventions and find all the stuff I want, but usually it was way over priced or I just couldnt force myself to drop too much cash.
  • Till next time Cattle Loads!

Nope. This NEVER happens to me. You should buy it.  Don't strap yourself and make it stressful, but buy what you can. Work out a deal. People always negotiate to some degree.

Here in California (San Francisco Bay Area), you can definitely find some deals. But, the type of thing you're describing would be gone so fast you'd never know it had been there, let alone a chance to go back and hash it out without a prior commitment. When I started really getting serious about game collecting (2011 or 2012), there was a local guy who had hoard of NES games. Someone else in this post described a similar experience to what I had. He had a LOT of stuff... a garage full of bins... ten to fifteen 30gal bins of loose NES carts, not to mention bins of SNES, Genesis, N64, consoles and more.  I decided I'd get a full NES set (what an adventure that has become!). On a side note, I remember he said I'd probably never get a Stadium Events... I proved him wrong on that one I got a lot of commons from him for about $2 to $3 per cart (maybe 100 or so). I bought some others at higher prices (from $10 - $25). I picked up Zombie Nation for $110, and at the time, that was one of the most expensive games I had ever purchased.  I really wondered if I was a sucker. Boy am I glad I bought those now!  I wish I had purchased so much more, but I didn't know what I didn't know... that these were steals compared to what would happen soon after that and that I'd probably never get another shot at a lot like this. Knowing what I know today, I would have bought every last damn cart he had, sold the duplicates to pay for it all, and had a ball. The moral of my story is... strike while the iron is hot. You know you want what they have, get a good deal on it. My 2 cents

  • There is no way I am going to be buying the really higher end carts like Dino Peak, that is just not my thing to have an entire collection however some.

The complete Deluxe set I already talked to him about and I will be buying it on a payment plan, he has yet to go through a lot of the stuff so we will see I have a feeling there is lots more I haven't seen yet.

I've pretty much accepted that I have no desire to seek out the more expensive NES carts to get a full collection. I'm just buying what I actually want to play/check out at this point. It's been a few years since I've gone out to a flea market or shop or anything actively looking for carts.

You can get famiclones if you really want to play them on original hardware for like $20-$30.

That DW-IV CIB he had was way to minty though godDAMN....the monster weakness chart, maps and manual are all pretty much new with no writting on them at all.

I think 1 of the maps just has a tiny tear in one of the folds and that was it, can't wait to start playing it.

The only thing missing out of the Deluxe set is the Antenna adapter and that was it.... It has all the R.O.B. pieces.

  • This never happens to me, I know how to budget money so I always have an emergency fund.

Shit happens man, do you live in northern California where you have to worry about Winter driving?

Vehicles have heater cores in them regardless of area as I am sure you know judging by your signature picture....without one, one has no heat....having no heat in Winter is not a very smart idea as you cannot see. In addition I had to plan a trip out of town so my girfriend could go see/meet a band she really loves which was not cheap...hence me not having a lot of money to work with here.

The whole point is that I "am" trying to be responsible and not blow all of the money I have in my account/credit to anticipate paying for a new vehicle before Winter and recovering from said trip.

My "emergency fund" was spent and now I "don't" have any extra money to blow which is why the thread was started.

I do congratulate you however on your financial stability and responsibility.

I honestly would Guntz but I do still like physical collecting I just can't justify paying upwards of $300-$800 for some of those higher end games thats all.
