What Are Your Faorite Sports Games of All Time?

Each year we see new releases for NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, etc... but just becasue they are new doesn't mean they are better then the previous iterations. Some people swear the best football game is still Tecmo Super Bowl, Blitz 2000, or NFL 2k5 (Maybe that last one is just me). Some say the best NHL game was released by EA in '94, or there will never be a better basketball game than NBA Jam TE or NBA Street 2. So what are your personal favorite sports games that you always go back to?

  • Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
  • It's hard to beat the original Ken Griffey on SNES. Best baseball game ever in my book.
  • I love Tecmo Super NBA Basketball for the SNES. I could play seasons of that game forever.
  • NBA Live 95 has always been a classic for this guy
  • Tecmo Super Bowl, Double Dribble, Blades of Steel, Punch Out, Pro Wrestling (if it counts) and RC Pro Am for the NES.

Madden 07 for the PS2. Maybe it's because my Steelers were coming off of a Super Bowl win but I played this one way more than the other Madden games.
  • The only annualized sports game I buy each year is MLB: The Show.

Some of my older favorites include:

    NFL 2K2 - Dreamcast

    Tennis 2K2 - Dreamcast

    WSB - Saturn

    Mutant League Hockey - Genesis

    NFL Blitz - N64

    NFL Street - Multi

    NHL 2001 - PS2

    Mario Strikers - GC

    Mario Golf/Tennis - GBA/GC

ESPN NFL 2K5 - Xbox Version
  • Does Street Fighter II count as a sports game now because of the rise of the UFC?
  • RBI Baseball- best sports game ever created.

Go ahead and lock it up.
  • Blades of Steel for Nes

    Mario Tennis for n64

    NBA Street vol 2

I'm surprised super dodge ball hasn't been said
  • MVP Baseball 2005 for XBOX
  • Mlb the show '14

    Mlb slugfest 2003

    Bottom of the 9th n64
  • NBA Hangtime (N64)

    NBA Showtime (N64)

NFL Blitz - any year (N64)

Tecmo Super Bowl (Nes, Snes, Genesis)

    Tecmo Bowl (GB)

    Fifa Street 2 (Gamecube)
  • I'm a diehard NHL 94' fan. It blew my mind when I found out it had a cult following.

That game is amazing, by far the best NHL game. I've been playing it since my best friend got it for Christmas when it came out.

I enjoyed nhl 95, but the body checks didn't stick well enough.  You deflect or just slow down.  In NHL 94 the body checks feel brutal and have a satisfying crunch and still plays very quickly. NHL 94 is like NFL Blitz to me. I loved destroying people with body checks after the play was over. It's exagerated, but it empasizes fun.

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.

As far as team sports games go, I've only ever really enjoyed NBA Jam, though I've never played the SNES Ken Griffey game.
  • NFL Blitz 2000 (N64) - All-time favorite game.

NBA Jam (Genesis) - Also probably in my top 5.

I'm not a big fan of more realistic sports titles, but these classic arcade games are amazing to play, especially with friends. I've picked up NHL 94 (Genesis) recently, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet; looking forward to it...
  • definitely love the Blitz and the Jam as well lots of fun times playing those with friends in the arcade and at home
  • Baseball stars...hot shots golf fore...
  • My favorite sprite based football is probably Madden 92. That killer ambulance never gets old.
  • Super Spike V Ball
  • Outside of NES and on newer gen stuff, I always loved NBA Jam, Blitz, Madden (all of em before '08), Gran Tourismo, and NHL (any of them). On the NES I love:

    Tecmo Bowl

    MT Punchout

    Blades of Steel

MLB (when I was a kid and didn't know anything about baseball I remember whenever I set my lineup I would always start the pitcher with the highest ERA cuz I thought that meant he was the best lol. "Ooh, this guy has an 8.49ERA! He's the man! Don't know if anyone ever did that.)
  • Blades of Steel

    Punch Out

    Baseball Stars

Ice Hockey (Have good memories of playing against my dad and making him be all fat guys so his team was slow)

    Techmo Super Bowl
  • Uh, NFL 2K5 is the greatest football game of all time, nothing weird about that. That game had a level of presentation that the NBA 2K series has just barely started to match. The physics, my god were they good. That was my senior year of high school and I remember all the Madden fanboys that wouldn't even give NFL 2K a chance because "Maden Rulz"  and "It must suck if its only $19.99"

Seriously, a brand new NFL game at $19.99 that is BETTER than Madden?!? Of course that was the greatest sports game of all time!

NBA 2K has been my favorite game series. Haven't missed an inception since the original, and usually always get them at launch or in the days after. I consider 2K4-2K6 the weak point in the series, and the only time that NBA Live was somewhat competitive with the series. It's been a runaway since 2K7, and an absolute joke since 2K11.
  • Quiditch world cup on the gamecube.
  • Tecmo Super Bowl - Buy the new game every year. (Kinda like Tecmo Bowl too...)

RBI Baseball - "Arcade" version is even better!

    Blades of Steel

RC Pro Am - Is more of a hobby than a sport...

    Tecmo NBA Basketball
  • Joe Montana Football

    Bulls Vs Lakers

    NBA Jam TE

    NHL '94

    RBI Baseball 4

    almost any WWF game

    SSX Tricky

    SSX 3

    SSX

    Madden '06

    all Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort/etc...

too many racing games to list

    Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 - 3

N64 and GC Mario golf games

    Mario Tennis

Punch Out and Super Punch Out

    Bass Hunter 64

    Bassmasters 2000

    Cabela's Big Game Hunter series

    I'm probably missing a few.
  • SNES - Super Baseball Simulator 1.000

SNES - NBA Live '96 (Enter Garnett and Kobe)

    SNES - NBA Jam TE

    PS1 - Cool Boarders 3

    PS1 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

    N64 - NFL Blitz

    N64 - Mario Tennis

    PS2 - NBA Street

    PS2 - NHL Hitz

Gamecube - Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

PS3 - Tiger Woods 2012 at the Masters

I feel like there's something that I'm forgetting...

Just Garnett in Live 96. The Iverson/Kobe draft was the next season.
