Nobody is mentioning Donkey Kong Classics. It has the same style as the rest and has an "Arcade Classics Series" pic on the back. This should be included in any kind of set extension discussion.
There are 30 titles in the black box/pixel art style. See the photo above for that list. These games were the launch titles.
There are an additional 3 games in the pixel/art style that game out a hair later. They look visually similar to the black box games except they are silver. They are Metroid, Rad Racer, and Kid Icarus.
Each of the above games are part of a 'series' - Action, Arcade, Light Gun, Sports etc.
There are two other games that are in these series but lack the art style. - MTPO and Ice Hockey.
Zelda 1 is sometimes also thrown in with this group because it appears on a lot of early NES posters and launch title checklists released by Nintendo. But it lacks both the pixel style AND a 'series' designation.
Using this info, Define a complete launch set on your own and have fun collecting.
All 30 BB games weren't available at launch. I believe Slalom wasn't released until sometime in '87 and was the last one
Day one launch titles were Super Mario Bros, 10-Yard Fight, Clu Clu Land, DK Jr. Math, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Gyromite, Hogan's Alley, Stack-Up, Golf, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Mach Rider, Baseball, Pinball, Soccer, Wrecking Crew, and Wild Gunman.
There is debate regrading whether SMB was a launch title. It may have been, but it could have been anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months after launch.
One thing to consider. There's a Gyromite small box and big box.
I'm not sure if they were both released at launch but I'm pretty sure the big box was released at launch.
Yeah, there are photos of the big box at the FAO Schwartz. Heck, there was a thread with those photos. edit: Actually, the big box Gryomites were at the San Fran store in the photos. Boxed ROBs were available in New York.
At any rate, the OP is going for loose, not boxed.

That's another good one. Even has the slanted title.
Another thing I noticed is that the pixel art seemed to get more detailed. Compare something like Gyromite and 10 Yard Fight to Pro Wrestling and especially Slalom and Rad Racer.

The photo you added TENGEN is not visible for me somehow, are you referring to this Donkey Kong Classic? It is in the 30 titles list, right?

Your pic is one of the 30. He was referring to the game actually called "Donkey Kong Classics", with both DK and DK Jr on it.
That post above was my first in NA, I landed here few times before, but not being NES/Nintendo focused I never had a good look around until yesterday: am so impressed with the community knowledge, welcoming tone and surprising number of replies (despite several existing topics on black label games )
Thank you all for the very valuable info (and a special thanks to Faxanadude for the summary, am being spoiled with this spoon feeding )
I will be going for the 33 set as I like the story behind the pixel art decision Nintendo took to manage expectations, but I have a feeling it wont be long before I get the other 3 too
That's NA for ya. One of the best communities on the web. We love games here.
The community's enthusiasm reminds me of the old days of gp32x boards (if you didn't know it, it was focused on open handhelds like the GP32, GP2X and Pandora), was there since 2003, I hope NA be my new home
I really love the simplistic style of the old black box games, mostly NROM. When I started collecting Famicom, I realised there were a crapton more games like these, but only released on Famicom. Remember, the Famicom came out in 1983.
Obviously this is a thread on the NES subset though. I kinda wishbmore games got the pixel treatment though. The PAL Duck Hunt and Mario labels always looked strange to me as well...
I saw that orange one, and was wondering: it is not pixel art and not a black label, what does it have to do with the topic?
Then I re-read the post to notice "and has an "Arcade Classics Series" pic on the back."
I saw the box scan several times and didn't notice that until I re-read the post
Yeah, Mike Tyson's Punch Out is the same way. Sports Series logo on the back. That makes three games that don't have pixel art but do have the series logo (DK Classics and Ice Hockey being the other two.)

Off the top of my head R.C. Pro-Am also fits that category.

Damn. Beat me to it. I count that under my subset as well.

I'm aware of the debate, but until I see definitive proof otherwise, it's a launch title for me.

Anyone have an estimate on what the BB set is worth.... cart only.
Gamevaluenow pegs the first 30 at $351.26
The silver label games bump it up to $380.04
