Games that force you to reset the console?
So a bit ago I learned that Dirty Harry on NES has a room where, if you go into it, the door is replaced with the words "HA HA HA" and you're trapped (forced to reset the console):

I'm also familiar with the X-Men game for Sega Genesis which makes you "reset the computer" by actually resetting your Genesis.. had the pleasure of experiencing that one as a kid.
I'm curious if there are any other games which either punish the player by trapping them or purposefully freezing the game, or if there are games which make you think "outside the box" like X-Men did. I know Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on DS has a part where you have to do something similar; that was very clever. Can you think of any others?

Neat thread, I'm interested if there's others as well.

Haha, on point.

Unless you're really good. There's a 30 minute speedrun on Youtube where the player keeps the torch through much of the game.
There's an X-MEN game on the Genesis that forces you to reset...but it's part of the game (and you're screwed if you're playing on a NOMAD).
Similarly, Onslaught forces you to reset to get your password, so you're screwed there too. OTOH the Nomad has the TMSS lockout system that keeps Onslaught from working, so it can't be played on a Nomad anyway unless you use a flash cart. Plus, of course, it's a horrlble game.
I'm surprised the Genesis was capable of that however. I thought the reset button on the older consoles was just a quick power flip. How does that even work?
As far as game breaking glitches I'd say one early one was the -1 world in Super Mario Bros. You had to either die off or reset the console. You did have the option of wasting your lives but still the game you were playing came to an end.
I have a model 2 Genesis with a broken reset button so I'm screwed with regard to "X-Men" and "Onslaught". This is supposed to be a common problem with model 2 units.
Yup. I had a Model 2 with a faulty Player 2 port!

He's probably using Game Genie.

No, it's legit. I linked to the video in another post.
AGDQ has some insanely good speedrunners.

Then he must be The Wizard.
I'm not looking for games that are difficult if you miss something. They're still possible. Maybe a better way to put it would have been "Games that utilize the reset function" although similar functions like the DS closing is just as interesting, and Dirty Harry was interesting to me because it has a dead end where you're completely trapped. Onslaught is a good example, I never played it.. but resetting to get your password is stupid
Sorry I misunderstood. I think Hotel Dusk on the DS requires some creative DS thinking.. Like closing the DS to transfer something over to another page...or something like that
