What Was Your Favorite Gaming Magazine?

I've been going through my old gaming magazines lately and I am interested to know what everyones favorite gaming magazines were back in the day. The first gaming magazine that I can remember getting was Tips & Tricks. I thought it was so cool to have all of those codes compiled together in one place. I had tons of fun trying different codes for all my different games. It didn't really have much content in it though, so I soon discovered GamePro and from that point on I was obsessed with GamePro. Definitely my favorite magazine. I also got pretty into Electronic Gaming Monthly, but I never liked it as much as I did GamePro.

  • Nintendo Power and Tips & Tricks were good.

I get Retro now. I like it so far.
  • GamePro as well. I then switched to GameInformer when Electronics Boutique and Gamestop had the subscription/value card things going on. I also liked EGM and XBM, but didn't stick with them as long as I did with GamePro...good memories
  • Definitely the old N64/NGC Magazine in UK. Have a read about its amusing history and reviewing habits here:

  • Growing up?

    1. EGM

    2. GameFan

    3. Nintendo Power

    Today?

    1. Super Play Magazine

    2. Sega Saturn Magazine

    3. EGM

    4. GameFan

    5. Nintendo Power

Super Play was a SNES publication based in the UK that ran for 48 issues from 1992-1996. The ultimate companion piece to any diehard SNES collection.

SSM is probably the best magazine in terms of sheer quality, but as my love for SNES surpasses Saturn by a lot these days, I'll give the slight nod to SP as my all-time favorite.

In fact, I wrote an article on my website about my top 5 publications back in 2007 that can be read here:

note: since writing that article nearly 9 years ago, I've decided I prefer Super Play to Sega Saturn Magazine.
  • EGM is the only thing I ever subscribed to. Love it during the late '90s to early '00s

The UK N64 mag was great too

I read and re-read the few GameFan's I had over and over again
  • 1. Game Informer

    2. Next Generation
  • Games master.
  • GamePro. When I was a kid I loved their rating system with the kids head that is about to explode for a 5.
  • EGM, Gamefan and later Play.

    GamePro was terrible.
  • Next Generation was pretty nice during the mid 90s when every company started putting out their own system.
  • Back in the day I read and enjoyed EGM, Official Dreamcast Magazine, OPM, OXM and Game Informer.

I also remember having a a subscription to Gamepro up until it was put out of its misery around 2007-09 or so and it was terrible. A shell of its former self.
  • Diehard Gamefan.

Agreed. GamePro was never great, but early on it was decent and passable. It was clear EGM was superior, however. GamePro had a weird style and odd layouts. It just didn't come off as very professional. I also didn't like its weak pages, and its staple bound ways.

I do have fond memories of receiving the first issue at Toys R Us back in the day with my brother's purchase of the first Genesis Madden, IIRC.

GameFan was legendary for its crazy passion (high review scores up the wazoo) and epic layouts. Some of those page designs still impress the eye to this very day.
  • EGM and then GamePro.
  • I started getting into magazines in 1993 and always chose EGM over Gamepro. EGM had ups and downs but I subscribed until they ended. Here were a few others I really liked for a short while

  • GamePro for custom art and layout, but when I wanted real game scoops and reviews, EGM.
  • GameFan

    Dreamcast Magazine

    Next Generation

    Electronic Gaming Monthly

    GamePro (mostly for previews)

    Tips & Tricks

    Retro Gamer (UK)

not of a fan of Play, Game Informer, Playstation Magazine, Nintendo Power etc.
  • Nintendo Power, of course! GamePro was alright, but nothing beat Nintendo Power for me.
  • Nintendo Power. I still read old issues from time to time.
  • Gamepro, egm2 are funnest to read. Tips and tricks, especially later issues are amazing for rare walkthrus. I also love early nintendo power. I also must mention a magazine i do love a lot: psm, a magazine for the ps1, then later ps2, etc.
  • It's funny, I was never a big Nintendo Power fan. While I was always interested in cool tips and tricks, I didn't need multipage spreads with photographic maps of the whole game. That was overkill for me. And of course, there was no real news at all, just whatever Nintendo was marketing.
  • My grandparents paid for my tips & tricks subscription. Always looked forward to getting it in the mail!
  • EGM, and ODCM(Dreamcast) were my favorites. I miss the Demo Discs that came with magazines back in the day. I still have tons of Dreamcast/Xbox/PC demo discs here at home.
  • Liked Nintendo Power, EGM2 and Tips & Tricks growing up. Which reminds me, I've been meaning to try and find an archive for T&T's monthly comic, Arcade Brigade.

Currently, I'm not a huge fan of any gaming magazines. I've poked through issues of the new EGM and it's mostly dry, uninteresting writing. Retro has the odd article every now and then, but not enough for me to bother buying. Game Informer doesn't tell me anything I didn't already hear about online two weeks before the book was delivered
  • Never subscribed to Nintendo Power but they were cool. I had Game informer for a little and it was alright. Now, any reviews, tips and tricks etc can all be found online. If only Nintendo Power would come back.
  • Nintendo Power was great in its prime. Tips & Tricks and EGM got me through me PS1 days.

I actually miss those days of not having the internet, having to wait for next months issues, and then having to wait for a ride to the store to check them out. Sometimes I wouldnt have any cash so I would have to take a pen and paper to write them down (no phone to snap a quick pic with). Or I would have to sign up to use the internet at school and hope I didnt get caught trying to print out game cheats or walk-throughs lol

Having all the information at my fingertips 24/7 is nice, but its something that is so common now that I dont appreciate it like I once did.
  • Nintendo Power and Gamepro for fun, but EGM when I wanted legit info.
  • I was never actually subscribed to a gaming magazine, but I did receive many second hand through a family friend.

The 2 that I got were Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) and Expert Gamer (XG).

I actually really liked XG, but it was only around for a few years.

Just discovered through a little detective work that XG actually got it's start as EGM. They reformated the mag and changed the name in '98. I wish I had thought to save some of those. I had quite a few of them.
  • PC Gaming World, only because a full conversion mod that I co-founded and helped produce was featured in it. I liked Nintendo Power for obvious reasons
  • Nintendo Power for sure is number one.

But tips and tricks was another one of my favorites. I remember going straight to the codes section and seeing what codes i could use for games that i had.
